Re: GGG card

What a reception the crowd gave him in the post fight interview. You can tell people love the guy.
I don't think he looked sloppy at all...fergusg wrote:That was an exciting fight, but Golovkin was sloppy compared to his usually exceptional standards... and let's not kid ourselves into believing that Willie Monroe Jr. was a world-class 160lb-er, because he simply wasn't.
That being said, an apparently sloppy and unmotivated GGG is still head and shoulders above the rest of the 160lb division. It's just a shame that K2 and HBO won't give him big paydays or allow him to demonstrate his supreme talent by funding a big super-fight, because the men he's facing are almost always second-tier (at best), barring one or two exceptions.

Fair enough, but a left hook buckled Monroe to the point of nearly going down and he took plenty of hard punches during the round that were clearly helping to wear him down. I just don't see how he came close to winning that with his pitter-pats, which were increasingly losing steam.jezzamundo wrote:To be fair, I was distracted by my baby daughter while watching the 5th so I possibly got it wrong. GGG undoubtedly landed the better punches, but Monroe was landing a lot more punches and GGG was defensively poor.
Exactly. He knew Munroe couldn't hurt him so he went into stalk mode.punchoutsb wrote:I don't think he looked sloppy at all...fergusg wrote:That was an exciting fight, but Golovkin was sloppy compared to his usually exceptional standards... and let's not kid ourselves into believing that Willie Monroe Jr. was a world-class 160lb-er, because he simply wasn't.

I think he purposefully was letting Monroe hit him. FWIW, he "confirmed" that in the post fight interview.
I believe he was sloppy because he was completely going for it. he showed in the first that he was the better boxer. This is something I have noticed form G and that he did with Maclin as well. He started out outboxing them, then when he feels that he has nothing to worry about, he goes for it full throttle. he is the man.fergusg wrote:That was an exciting fight, but Golovkin was sloppy compared to his usually exceptional standards... and let's not kid ourselves into believing that Willie Monroe Jr. was a world-class 160lb-er, because he simply wasn't.

And who is the best?Tanzio wrote:Ok strategy v Monroe junior but against the best that will get you in trouble.
I'm sure he will adjust his strategy according to the opponent in front of him. he boxed beautifully in the first round.Tanzio wrote:Ok strategy v Monroe junior but against the best that will get you in trouble.
If he fights himself, it will get him in trouble.Baby Face Finster wrote:And who is the best?Tanzio wrote:Ok strategy v Monroe junior but against the best that will get you in trouble.
Sub-standard?fergusg wrote:Golovkin is much better than what he showed tonight... and he allowed a sub-standard opponent to be very briefly competitive, when he should have been stopped a round or two earlier.

They booed hard too. A Kazakh who has only been fighting in the US for like two and a half years or something is not only selling more tickets than Ward in his home country, but he's doing it in his home state and the locals are booing Ward heartily too.ikorolev wrote:People in California are booing when Ward is mentioned !
I gave Monroe the 4th though.Tarkus wrote:This fight nicely showed that scoring rounds solely on the punches landed is wrong. Even in 3rd and 4th when Monroe perhaps landed more, it was GGG who was landing power. You saw the result in the sixth.
Talk about nitpicking. So because he didn't stop him a round or two earlier then it was a disappointment? Keep on hating hater.fergusg wrote:Golovkin is much better than what he showed tonight... and he allowed a sub-standard opponent to be very briefly competitive, when he should have been stopped a round or two earlier.
I think it's really good payday against a guy like Monroe. There are only few fighters, who would get more money against similar opponent - Floyd, Manny, Wlad, Cotto and Canelo. And GGG gets paid more with every next fight, so not bad at all.crusader wrote:$1.5 million isn't a big payday?
He said that he didn't want to finish the fight in 5 minutes, because people came to watch him and he wanted to give them a show.fergusg wrote:Golovkin is much better than what he showed tonight... and he allowed a sub-standard opponent to be very briefly competitive, when he should have been stopped a round or two earlier.
