The splintering of titles made more "champions" who didn't have to fight each other so cherry-picked opponents. In the days of only one generally recognized champion the contenders had to fight each other to get a shot at the top dog. In those times being the fifth or sixth ranked contender actually meant something.

The problem- too many soft defences, too many catchweight fights, too much division hopping. The solution- choose a division and stay there, bigger penalties for missing weight, no more voluntary defences and bigger incentives for unification. Nice idea but never gonna happen is it ?
