You're welcome, Jaclem. And I wasn't commenting on this forum in particular but forums in general. You never know where something will go when you start writing and thinking about it. Mark Twain was trying to write a short story about some amazing twins and a subplot kept getting in the way and annoying him and finally he ran with the subplot and got Puddin' Head Wilson, which I consider his best work. Some yo-yo can come on this forum and make some wild statement and it can get you thinking and make for a lot of fun even if it isn't near what the thread started as.quote="Jaclem"]okay, alright.....good points, well written. i wasn't objecting to threads wandering from their beginning point....just commenting on the fact this one got back to it. i do not need a lecture on what this forum is about, as you will learn after you've been here for a while, but thank you for taking the time to do it anyway.
Saxton was a pretty boy controlled by Palermo, no informed person disputes this. But he had seldom seen boxing skills. His ability to jab, feint, duck, block were as advanced as it gets. Two things he didn't have, stamina, and a chin. The guy would stagger if you blew bad breath on him. To be considered in the elite class you can't be defined by your weaknesses, even if you are limited by them, and Saxton was. So I am saying his ability to box was stellar, his ability to legitimately defeat a carry-me-off-on-my-shield warrior like Basilio, nonexistent.I'm intrigued by your selection of Johnny Saxton as one who displayed high skill levels. He's not one i would have chosen....i don't think he belongs in the elite class of boxers, and he was in more than few "questionable" fights, questionable being the word boxing writers used to avoid law suits. he WAS a pretty good boxer, though, and it's rewarding to find someone here who remembers fighters of that era.
I just feel under any conditions, the heart of Marciano carries the day. No way Marciano struggles against Fat Willie Meehan or rolls over for Fireman Jim Flynn. And if Dempsey threw those fights for coins, shame on him and Kearns.as i am skimpy in my praise of marciano, after i picked him to beat dempsey i couldn't resist the dig....especially when i could get one in on both. seriously, i think someone here made a good point about which era they'd fight in. if it was dempsey's, then i'd say the first one to get knocked down would be the loser, with the 'no nuetral corner" rule not in effect then.
[/quote]skills...good point...one should go with one's innate ability. foolish for a short stubby guy be a stick and run fighter. short arms make the elbow and head more effective weapons.
you may have a point about reagan not being shot. in a similar vein, i have absolute proof that lincoln wasn't shot either. he died from a veneral disease he contracted from ann rutledge, when they copulated after a rail splitting contest.
again, thank you for your interest in my post.
You are an excellent poster, Jaclem. I may come on like a wiseass but I respect your knowledge and perspective.
