Nice work on a-c), guys. He also worked as a janitor, but his last job before the Olympics was head butcher on the kill floor of a slaughterhouse. (Some havespeculated that this was the inspiration for the slaughterhouse scenes in Rocky.) The injury he suffered in the '64 Olympic semi was actually a broken left thumb.

yeah. he was first aware of difficulties with his eyes whilst at the olympics. it later turned out he had a cataract developing in his left eye. he was prescribed galsses but didnt want any sanctioning body to find out about it so just lived with keeping it a secret. He had surgery on it in 1975 but had to wear contacts in and out the ring due to it. This thread is a bit of a sore point - I have had to on-sell my tix to the Olympic finals to be best man at a wedding - my idiot mate (who is both the groom and supposed to be coming with me to Athens) had got his dates wrong.
