Why? It was a close fight. If Eubank has turned up before round 8 he'd have won it.

We might be again saying the similar thing after the second one. Eubank has a new coach. I prefer if he has some more time to improve. Whats a rush.

I think that would be a good first defense; not a pushover but someone he should beat.

Lemieux or Ndam would make sense. Both top ten guys, both credible.

Eubank Jr isn't world level. If Eddie's manoeuvred him into a title fight (albeit a bullshit one) with Jacobs and he beats him then he can join the big boys at world level. Does beating Spike make you world class now ?

What's the point in fighting GGG so soon? Surely the best thing to do is slowly progress not fight the best in the division who is top 3 P4P

One thing that annoys me is that he calls himself a world champion yet says he is 18-24 months away from fighting GGG.

World champion my foot.

I have a feeling it will be a tune up against Langford followed by a rematch with Eubank Jr, which would be a shame as he has already cleaned up at domestic level and shouldn't drop back down to fight them guys, let them get some good wins and earn their shot.

N'Dam or Heigland would do nicely, or even one of the older fellas like Soliman or Mora.

I don't want to see a Eubank Jr rematch yet. Heiland would be a really good fight.

it will be an easy defence. then another easy defence before a summer showdown with another easy defence..

maybe we will get Flanagan, smith and BJS all making defences on the same night

Pretty much. The WBO top 15 is absolutely horrendous and that's even taking into account the middleweight division is very weak at the moment.

You have the novice Tommy Langford at no.6. Kerry Hope, whose lost to Frankie Borg is in at no.14. A chap named Vitali Kopylenko is in at no.12. His only fight of note was a wide decision LOSS to Willie Monroe Jnr (Southpaw who fought GGG). His last win was over a opponent with a 6-7-2 record.

I betcha they pick one of these guys at some point. All guys who shouldn't be anywhere near a world title. BJS and Bunny were chastising Eubank for facing Blackwell next. Even with only 13 fights under his belt and having only done 10 rounds once, he gave Saunders a tough fight. He’s now been in five scheduled 12 rounders, done the full 12 three times and unbeaten in his last seven. The current version of Blackwell is better than all of those guys.

I'm a Eubank fan, and if he'd started the fight the way he did against Spike, he'd have won comfortably. None of that means he's earned a shot though; he took the first half of the fight off and Saunders won fair and square; he needs to bring something new to the table; save it til he wins a world title himself. GGG is too soon as well, I think an easy first defence and then maybe a Cotto. A marquee name would be good for his visibility. I want Eubank to pick up a legit title and then muller him in a unification.

Vze3jnhz: I was very disappointed in that "fight". I think the belt is there for the taking since Andy Lee gave it away. I would like to see Daniel Jacobs give Saunders a beat down and see how well they get along in the ring.

Hopefully he finds a trainer who can sort out his stamina. The way he gave up round 4 without a punch after having badly hurt Lee the round before, and then very nearly gave away a fight he should have been easily winning, was shocking. He lost multiple rounds where Lee barely grazed him by simply doing nothing.

Clearly there is either a) a stamina issue or b) a problem with his style where he just stops throwing shots in certain situations or c) both. The Eubank fight pointed to a), the Lee fight to b). As skilled as BJS is, he is not going to beat better opponents without working much harder in these fights.

Ridiculous post, your already criticizing BJS for a fight he hasn't even taken yet!!!! Of course he will start with an easy first defence (most new world champions do especially guys who have only just come onto world level), they have said they are VERY interested in fighting Cotto. You cant say BJS has taken the easy route so far as he has a very good resume and hasn't ducked anyone, he took the unbeaten records of Jarrod Fletcher, Spike, Ryder, Blandamura and Eubank as well as beating Blackwell and now has beat Andy Lee and you are already criticising his future opponents, very silly.

The reason why BJS and Frank were chastising Eubank is because he is calling out GGG and are confident of beating him but they are more interested in fighting Blackwell even though they are mandatory for Danny Jacobs, why fight Blackwell if you think you are the best MW and are mandatory for a world title why fight Blackwell???

If Eubank would of fought BJS the way he did Spike BJS would have counter punched him silly and if you think Saunders would be as easy to hit as Spike was you really don't know what you are talking about. Eubank started quicker because Spike is easy to find but Eubank could fight BJS again but would be chasing shadows again until BJS tires, you see styles makes fights and BJS is too slick and skilled for Eubank and always will be.

Okay pal I understand your view. Massive respect for BJS to date; he's cleaned up domestically. But he's in world class now. I wouldn't begrudge him making a few quid on soft defences here or there. But as a “world champion” to take on people below domestic class… you can’t justify that. Of course time will tell so we’ll see and you’re right I shouldn’t judge until he’s actually announced anything. But Calzaghe wasted far too much time fighting soft touches in WBO defences. I just hope BJS doesn’t do the same. BJS has come through tests time and again and I can see him improving further. I just don’t want him to stagnate by fighting poor opposition. He's also stated himself he's 18 to 24 months away from fighting GGG which again I can't begrudge him avoiding but at the same time hardly the attitude of a "world champion".

As for Eubank Jnr; I agree it’s silly for them to call out GGG or Jacobs then fight Blackwell. But at the same time he’s lacking in competitive fights. He’s only had three so far (BJS, Chudinov and Spike). As mentioned above, Blackwell has developed into a very good fighter and will provide Eubank Jnr with some good experience prior to fighting Jacobs. I can see the logic behind why they are taking the fight.

I like billy joe but it seems that world champions don't want to prove they are the best in the divison and fight each other, they just avoid them. Look at canelo trying to avoid GGG with his 155lb excuse, or Frampton and quigg avoiding rigo for so long.

I think he has done it the hard way but I cant see frank putting him in with a big threat to his belt for a while at least 12months or more

Do you think he would be earning enough money for his family if there was only 1 world champion? The fact is many boxers are getting paid better because they can win a world title without being the best in their division, in an ideal world boxer's would get paid like footballers and there would be 1 world champion in each division but that's never going to happen.

Personally I agree Blackwell is a great fight for Eubank and I said a couple of days ago its close to a 50/50 fight for me, Blackwell has come on really well after being chucked in at the deep end early in his career and deserves massive respect, is he in the WBO top 15? I wouldn't be against him fighting BJS again before Saunders takes on a big name.

Cotto brings money - it would be a bloody hard fight for Saunders, not sure I'd make him favourite either. Cotto is head and shoulders above anyone he has faced to date, whether he's a small middleweight or not, he's still a great fighter. Saunders doesn't look especially solid at 160 either, he'd probably make 154 with a lot of work.

I'd not expect Lee to go the distance with Canelo , and I doubt BJs would win more than a few rounds as he'd be in reverse for much of the fight avoiding Canelo's work.

Canelo is hardly a workhorse himself though. He is like Saunders in that he only throws when opportunities present themselves. Canelo often fights as though he is preserving stamina and keeping something in the tank, while Saunders seems to run out of gas regardless of whether he is being economical or not. It will be his eventual downfall.

A rematch with Andy Lee could get him a few quid and another victory. And I'd like to see him in the ring with Matthew Macklin, that could be a real entertaining fight.

I really hope that Eubank doesn't get the rematch, because if he wins it - he and his father are going to be unbearable.

He works a lot harder than Saunders, and he also puts A LOT more on each punch than Saunders does. The shots he was landing on Cotto were real heavy the whole way through the bout.

It will not happen, but what SHOULD be next for Saunders is.

Bily Joe Saunders vs Liam Smith - WBO LIGHT MIDDLE TITLE.

I remember Saunders as an amateur and he was touted as a big puncher. I think the reason why is isn't putting them away is because he is fighting beyond his natural fighting weight. Remember there was talk of Andy Lee moving down to Light Middle - he looked about 2 weight divisions bigger than Saunders.

Saunders has very underrated skills - his skills have got him British, Commonwealth, European and world honours at Middleweight - beating two world class fighters in the process - but he looks smaller than Cotto at Middleweight.
