Well saidhandsofstone wrote:Hopefully any pro who suffers defeat in the ams, stock plummets and they fall down the rankings,im more so thinking guys like Eubank Jr who are champs, hopefully the BBBC will make any British champion who competes or even tries to compete relinquish their title just as they would if they got a world title fight
Im dissapointed in fighters like Khan and Wlad who unnderstand the prestige about the Olympic boxing yet want to play a part in ruining that, ultimitely amateur boxing will suffer as why stay amateur when you can just turn pro and compete there anyway?
Then in 30 years time an Olympic Boxing Gold medal will hold about as much prestige as an Olympic Tennis Gold or a football gold

World class amateurs fight other world class amateurs on a regular basis but many world professional champions defend their titles against much poorer opposition. Over 3 rounds a world class amateur could have more success than people on here think. Are we forgetting that Lomanchenko was a world class amateur who fought for a world title in his 2nd pro fight? I take it that same day weigh ins are the norm in Amatuer boxing, so what weight limits are the pros going to fight at?
How do we think Anthony Joshua would fair in the Rio Olympics after only 34 rounds of non competitive boxing under his belt in the last 4 years?

Would professional boxing really suffer if amateur boxing lost a lot of its prestige?handsofstone wrote:Hopefully any pro who suffers defeat in the ams, stock plummets and they fall down the rankings,im more so thinking guys like Eubank Jr who are champs, hopefully the BBBC will make any British champion who competes or even tries to compete relinquish their title just as they would if they got a world title fight

Amateur boxing is like a novice version of professional boxing. It should mostly be for the noobs and part timers.
Talented fighters should not be hanging around for decades playing at the children's version of boxing and put under pressure not to try the proper stuff.
Amateur boxing should be something that professional fighters can dip in and out of if they want a bit of practice.
Novice's should be able to do both professional and amateur boxing and not have to choose. Why can't they have the best of both worlds?
Re: Eubank Jnr applied to represent team GB at Rio'16
I wonder how many pro boxers have regretted their move to the pro ranks and wished they had continued as an amateur? We all know that the pro game is not always paved with gold. If you are an elite amateur being funded for training, being flown around the world for tournaments with all the camaraderie and prestige it brings why would you want to give that up? The risks of turning pro, long lay offs, contract disputes, selling tickets and the like are potential headaches.

The same way as those fighters that dont go to Olympics, which is almost everyone.ScottDetonator wrote:How are our future guys supposed to progress if Pro's start taking their places at the Olympics?

Football Olympic gold is not prestigious exactly because it is the youth tournament. Olympic basketball and ice hockey on the other hand not only did not suffer from addition of pros but became more prestigious. Same will happen to boxing. Far more people will tune in if there are fighters like Kovalev participating. It will be very interesting to see how they do against the top "amateurs" in amateur game.
I can tell you right now that Eubank wont do very well, he wont win a fight.
Re: Eubank Jnr applied to represent team GB at Rio'16
Tend to agree could'nt see Eubank doing well at all , Whats more don't think his dad could see it either , otherwise he would off told him stay ameteur win the olympics, Its all rubbish from the Eubanks but i think long term the ameteurs have got there eye on making the Olympics the world title you must have

Just a press release to get Eubank's name in the press. Surely released by his promoter. Middleweight was taken anyway.
There was never any chance of Jnr going to Olympics. However it was a great PR play as most of the major papers featured this 'story'.

Re: Eubank Jnr applied to represent team GB at Rio'16
I don't see an issue with pro's in the Olympics in fact it could become a great way of seeing some of the best facing the best. AMs could make their name beating a pro.
The Olympics should be the best in the world competing for the medals not the best in the world excluding all the other best in the world.
I think football in the Olympics should be unrestricted in terms of squad members.
One of the highlights of the last Olympics was Andy Murray winning the gold, pro's entering the tennis is a new one as well.

Just a publicity stunt by the Eubanks.
Most pros would struggle at the weigh ins aswell as its hard to get your body back to multiple weigh ins

is not Middleweight in the Amateurs 75 kilos, nearly 12 stone and in the pros 11st 6Ibs ? The pros do have day before weigh in, could even it out.PredatorHayds wrote:Just a publicity stunt by the Eubanks.

Be hard for a lot of pros. All depends on how much they dehydrate down 48hrs or so before as that's impossible to do 4-5 times in 2 weeks.Anzi wrote:is not Middleweight in the Amateurs 75 kilos, nearly 12 stone and in the pros 11st 6Ibs ? I could imagine someone like Pacman being able to do it but weight wise he's a phenomenon.
Re: Eubank Jnr applied to represent team GB at Rio'16
Only the top top pros would walk in and medal easily. And how many of them will do that, not many.
Which UK lightweight would've been able to fight 3 times in a week and beat Lomachenko over 3x3s in 2012. Having to fight so often over short space makes a difference too. At top level pros weigh the championship weight for an hour or two on the day of the weigh in then come in a st or two heavier!
I think likes of Lomachenko, Usyk etc.... have turned over (borderline) world championship level.

Understand your point, however Eubank jr would weigh in 7 Ibs more, then he does in the pros, so it would balance things out and he is always in shape, the 5 fights in 7 days would be hard to adapt to though, not many pros even spar 5 times in a week, never mind fight.PredatorHayds wrote:Be hard for a lot of pros.
