It breaks my heart when I think back 10-15 years ago, and all the traditional brewery pubs were being gutted by shopfitters.

You'd have really old bars, some of the woodwork was great and had plenty of character. Large 'Big D' peanuts hanging up on the cellar door. Brass and stained glass windows. Big porcelain toilets with chunks of pineapple in keeping them fresh.

Then these national chains stepped in, ripped out all of the bar - and replaced it with sh*t MDF and halogen lights. Renamed it "Bar & Kitchen" and began selling frozen fish & chips and gourmet burgers (basically awful super-thick burgers they'd charge £17 for).

If a place is painted trendy grey or olive, and has "Bar & Kitchen" on the sign and sells craft ale - I'd rather burn it down than drink in it.

PS- Mick is a very decent man.

It's because the breweries sell it to them so expensively. They're having to charge a fortune to try and make any profit. I've got mates who are publicans, and they said the reason all the pubs do food now, is because it's the only thing they make any money on, that and wine which they aren't forced to buy from the Brewery at extortionate prices.

Now the breweries in London, are all trying to sell their properties, because there is more money to be had in selling the land for development, than there is running a pub. In my manor the council have actually forced two of the breweries to sell the buildings on as a pub to someone else, rather than turning them into more "luxury flats."

You expect to pay more in a pub but fornicate me, either 50p from Asda or at least £3.50 in any crappy pub and you can see why they are having problems.

It's a shame in one way, as I do like the culture of the local pub. But that's why their failing.

Being single, and living alone, it can be nice to pop out and have a few beers / a skinful if you're not doing anything else at the weekend. Talk to the barmaid, some of the other drunks. But when I have mates round, I often just get some booze in and drink at home. A lot cheaper if there's a big group of you, and I'm not disturbing anyone at home anyway.

Funny how when I was younger I found it a bit odd being in a pub on my own. Now it doesn't seem worthwhile going out if I have my mate's round.

Back home in Wakefield I can go to the Lupset working mens club and get a pint of bitter for about 2.50. The blokes that drink in there don`t believe me when I tell them what it costs in Norway.

I told one bloke to go and find out for himself and his answer was pure class. He told me that he couldn`t go as he didn`t have a passport Leaving Yorkshire even for one night would send the bugger into a cold sweat.

Is that the Lupset Lodge on Horbury Rd? It's the same in town, day off today so meeting a mate down the Strafford Arms, the Raven etc. Will be able to buy 2 pints and change from a £5 note.

Yes mate. Horbury Road not far from the old Empire Stores. Are you a Wakefield lad? I moved away in 1992 but get back occasionally. In town I used to drink at the Graziers down the street from the old Argos and also the Black rock.

Strafford Arms? That place used to be the wild west back in the day. There was some proper rough holes.

Funnily enough another lad from Wakefield (same age as me) lives on my street here in Norway. We used to play Rugby together at Stanley Rangers. We both grew up on Lupset. Small world. I wonder what the odds are on two council estate lads from Lupset ending up in the same street in Norway not 50 yards from each other, having not really spoken to each other for over 20 years.

Yes mate, live in Wrenthorpe now but grew up in Stanley and Outwood.
