Anybody taking Smith seriously in this fight and talking up his chances has very limited knowledge of boxing or hasn't watched much of Smith.
He has absolutely nothing that will worry Canelo in any way and his gameplan will be to walk forward in straight lines with a high guard and try to KO Canelo. He is going to get played with all night and probably be in survival mode from round 1 onwards. Going the distance will probably be his aim.

It's commonplace to write off the chances of Irish fighters.

This is. A big fight and for all we know Smith might show something he hasn't before. Because, let's face it, he has to.
Just because you haven't seen it, haven't been shown the evidence, doesn't mean it can't happen or that Smith can't put up a good fight.
