So Gallagher works for Tesco does he? I 100% agree with your post then in that case Stevie. I think most people probably see it as a joke, rather than actually mocking him for working for a supermarket - but you are spot on

Joe Gallagher: This is what boxing is all about..
What? Taking a bad beating and keep sending him out?

Joe Gallagher has had a torrid time. Even when you take out his disappointing world title challenges. Two of his unbeaten prospects have lost too. He told Hosea Burton going into the final round against Frank Buglioni that he needed a knockout. When he was 5 rounds up. Burton then gets knocked out himself... Then when his fighter Marcus Morrison needed a knockout in the final round. He tells him to box. :KO:

Joe isn't a bad trainer but I have to ask, what exactly was the game plan last night?

He locked Crolla away and had him training like a trojan, studying Linares fights in detail and supposedly coming up with a fool proof plan to beat him.

Yet come fight night he does no different to what he did in the first fight and ends up losing even wider.

Linares raised his game but Crolla didn't, and it is a worry considering Joe is supposed to be a top tier trainer.

Simple do f*** al for 6 rounds and hope Linares tired but Linares shown he is a level above.

What a fighter.

Linares is very very good when he gets into his rhythm and Crolla clearly doesn't have the power to knock him out if his rhythm.

Linares would probably always beat Crolla regardless whether Crolla has a game plan or not.

But the fact that the game plan didn't seem to change at all over the two fights makes one question Joe's capabilities at this level.

I think the gameplan did change. The first fight for me was a much better performance from Crolla and the only other thing they could do is the classic do nothing for 6 rounds hope the opponent tires in the second half.

That's what they tired but Linares was FAAAR took good to fall for that unlike Barroso who fell for it. The key round where Crolla would have planned to step up his work rate would have been round 7 but he got dropped.

Last night was reminiscent of Quigg-Frampton at times with the complete lack of activity. Not saying Joe is a bad trainer at all and Linares is clearly a lot more naturally talented than Crolla but as others have said it does seem to be a case of "hands up, chin down, walk forward but don't punch for 6 rounds" followed by putting a bit more pressure on in the second half of the fight and then claim you won.

I don't blame him as much for Crolla's lack of success against Linares but he has to take some blame for Quigg fvcking up the Frampton fight. A big test of Joe as a trainer will be when we see how much, if at all, Quigg improves under Roach.

Hopefully we find out soon re Quigg.

Roach hasn't got too big a reputation for turning tough/testing fights.

The Quigg strategy was poor but on the whole I think he has maximised a lot of his stable. Getting Crolla to the stage of holding a world title was a great achievement. A few years ago nobody would have dared to talk about Crolla even sharing a ring with the likes of Linares. The likes of Paul Smith was managed and coached well to get in the position of a world title challenge and did very well in the first fight against Abraham. There is only so much you can do with the fighter if he doesn't having outstanding natural talent. Callum looks the first fighter he has had that comes into that catergory, so seeing how that plays out will tell us a lot more.

Agreed.

Not like Joe has Freddie Roach's stable, is it?

Definitely, Callum looks like another level of talent to the rest of the stable.

And also, it's always harder after getting the big wins because everyone's gunning for you.

To be honest I never rated Joe Gallagher all that highly as a trainer. Some of his public statements and tactics in big fights are beyond the realms of understanding.

I would tend to look at 2 other expkanations for his recent success with fighters.

1 - the fact that he has been working with a talented, good bunch of fighters who have arrived on the boxing scene at the same time together.

2 - Eddie Hearn (empowered by the full weight of Sky's support & his own deep pockets) has successfully been able to select the right bouts for the said boxers at just the right time in their careers & pinpointing good opportunities (eg vacant world title fights).

All that being considered Joe, must be a half decent trainer but certa

But certainly not the world-class, ground-breaking coach that some think just because he won an award.

If Linares wasn't going to tire then this was always going to be hard for Crolla. He could have had Eddie Futch and Ray Arcel in his corner, it was going to be a struggle.

Linares look incredible against these grinding types. Hit him with some power and he doesn't like it that much. Before we describe his as the new SRR, we need to remember that Kevin Mitchell nearly beat him.

I think the fact Crolla has even got to the level of sharing a ring twice with Linares in world title fights says a lot about Gallagher's abilities as a trainer. Seriously, who out there would ever have seen Crolla as being competitive at this level when he was boxing Sykes in Prizefighter?
Linares is an elite level pro-a genuine world champion who has been pro since he was 17.
No disgrace in losing to him and boxing 24 rounds and no reason to lambast his trainer.

The fact he didn't pull his prospect out Morrison was a disgrace. Any lesser trainers would of been pulled up on it.
The fact he tried to stop Crolla before the 12th was embarrassing even worse that no-one listened to him.

He's obviously a good trainer but the more spotlight he gets the worse the MAN becomes.
