Perhaps. I am not talking about Cleverly becoming a defensive master like a Mayweather or a Pep overnight. Merely talking about giving himself the space to pick his shots more carefully. A good trainer could help him improve on that - (maybe someone like Shane McGuigan)

I'd say that he showed glimpses of it in his 1st fight against Bellew. Especially when he utilized his jab as Bellew was coming in.

Kovalev and Ward are P4P top 5 without a shadow of doubt. Cleverly gets smashed to bits by Kovalev again.
