I'd love to meet the "experts" who come up with these shortlists and get them to explain some of their choices because no serious sports expert can pick Equestrianists(or whatever the shite they call them) over the likes of Carl Frampton, Chris Froome or Johnny Rea.

Lets not forget it is the public who are the pick the winners.... Giggs in 2009 was most odd though, he should never have been nominated.

Personally I don't think it should be a shortlist (like the old days) but then I guess the BBC cannot be seen giving their award to someone completely undeserving - Imagine if Flintoff won it for the boxing he did a few years ago.

1997 was a shite year, Greg won an ITV version of the award also..... it was the 1st and only year ITV did it.

Edwards won the world triple jump gold and broke the world record by a huge amount twice in the final. It was a phenomenal achievement.

I also think if a horse loses his jockey but still wins the race, (as long it goes the right way, jumps all the right fences etc) it should still be called the winner.
