Van heerden respectfully said he played with McGregor on his first day back at the gym. Its on YouTube somewhere.
Re: Would Paulie Malignaggi beat McGregor ?
I bumped into Van Heerden by complete fluke while in Heathrow on my way to the Khan vs Alvarez fight (he spotted I was reading Boxing News and asked if I was a fan of the sport). He also mentioned McGregor in a respectful manner, but it was very clear he didn't consider him anything like a decent pro standard.
I'm a huge McGregor fan, but those thinking he could hang with top pro boxers based on his current level of experience are absolutely crazy. Paulie would toy with him.

Pauline outboxes him and stops him.
If he fought Paulie on debut it would be one of the hardest debuts of all time.
To show a bit of perspective here. The WSB fighters who are some of the best fighters in the world need about 5 fights to adapt to the pro game which is still lightning quick. (Loma the only exception)
McGregor is not as good boxing as WSB level fighters. That's a FACT. He'd need 15-20 fights to adjust before he took on a top 50 rated guy and that's only IF he got through the first fights unscathed.

The 'unknown' element is what would get people to put their hands in their pockets. That's the selling point.
Mcgregor isn't going outbox any top 100 boxers. He would go in as a huge underdog. The one thing he would possibly bring would be a punchers chance. Would the power carry over with bigger gloves on?
I can't see anything but a wide decision vs anyone of Paulie skill level unless he hits the jackpot of a left hook.
If he tries his hand at boxing then fair play to him.

Anyone remember James Tony vs Randy Couture by the way? Suppose that shows how vast the difference is between the sports albeit the opposite way around.

As much as I like McGregor, he isn't a very good boxer. Van Heerden did indeed box the head off him at half pace and apparently Phil Sutcliffe used to aswell. They are from the same Dublin boxing club.

Re: Would Paulie Malignaggi beat McGregor ?
Macgregor is an MMA fighter, not a boxer. It's like saying Andy Murray would beat Ramy Anshour (or whoever) as they play racquet sports.
Conor trains for so many aspects of fighting he's naturally disadvantaged in hands only boxing. If he concentrated for 5 years on boxing only, he might make a good pro. But this whole jump in with a world class fighter in his first fight is just silly.
Conversely, Conor would beat every pro boxer under MMA rules at his weight.

It should do, I don't think the larger gloves actualy effect the power that much, I think the bigger thing would be how the large gloves change how to defend.Old Jack J wrote:The 'unknown' element is what would get people to put their hands in their pockets. That's the selling point.

He could potentially get caught in an MMA fight by the pro boxer, but of course McGregor would start a big favourite against them all.boxingknockout wrote:Macgregor is an MMA fighter, not a boxer. It's like saying Andy Murray would beat Ramy Anshour (or whoever) as they play racquet sports.

Unedited footage, as opposed to the edited suff that McGregors people released.
Van Heerden toying with him. He'd stand absolutely no chance against any world level boxer and hardly any chance at all against top domestic level boxers too.

How would you define UFC casual?Naandrew wrote:Course he f**ing would. I really hope this McGregor boxing talk just ends it would be a farce.
He is obviously class in MMA and build his legacy there. If he got whooped in a boxing ring it
would just damage his reputation
I do like McGregor though, he doesn't give a f**k and seems to want to fight anyone.
He's one a few reasons I've become a UFC 'casual' this year

Just knowing a handful of fighters and watching the fights at the top. In fairness really enjoyed what I have seen this year. Boxing can learn a lot from itSouthy1922 wrote:How would you define UFC casual?Naandrew wrote:Course he f**ing would. I really hope this McGregor boxing talk just ends it would be a farce.

That's footage filmed by Van Heerden's team right? That's probably about as objective as the stuff Mcgregor's team put out. Tony Jeffries who was there and watched all the sparring to my knowledge- said that he was impressed with Mcgregors boxing.crusader wrote:An embedded version of the video linked above:

Re: Would Paulie Malignaggi beat McGregor ?
Maybe, although McG looks pretty fornicating limited even if he's not going 100 percent or has sparred several rounds. When people claim that he'd be even money or better in his first pro boxing match against vastly more experienced fighters like Paulie (even Loma didn't start at that level), there is a high standard to meet.
I think some people are buying into his hype too much. He never won anything notable as a boxer despite apparently having competed as an amateur, and there is a huge difference between winning a boxing match against experienced, top 20-ish pro boxer, and beating up on MMA fighters in the UFC.
Even in his domain, Connor recently had his hands full recently with Nate Diaz's striking ('oh so you're a wrestler now?')...

Re: Would Paulie Malignaggi beat McGregor ?
I agree, he doesn't look great in that footage. That said- that's like two minutes worth of sparring. Who knows how many rounds of sparring they did. You then also have to factor in the head guards and big gloves (with Mcgregor being a decent puncher, atleast whilst wearing Mma gloves) and who knows how a real matchup between those two would materialise.
Re: Would Paulie Malignaggi beat McGregor ?
That's another thing, how vaunted will that power of his be when he's wearing boxing gloves? I doubt he'll have the same ability to hurt opponents with single shots, and skill would become more of a factor. Are experienced and skillful pro boxers going to have that much trouble with his one hand? Is knocking out grapplers in the UFC evidence that they would?
Suggesting that he'd debut as pretty much a top 15 boxer is fanboyism IMO. Again, even in his own domain he had serious problems with Nate Diaz's hands.
