Povetkin says he's innocent when he fails a drug test, boxing fans don't believe him.

James Toney says he's innocent when he failed a drug test and boxing fans not only believe him, but will welcome him into the IBHOF with open arms.

Toney was a drug cheat, along with most of the top US boxers of the past 20 years. It's not a US v Russia thing for me. History shows that both countries are as bad as each other for doping in sports.

I don't think anyone believes Toney is innocent? But regardless, Povetkin is a cheating prick and should be banned for life, as should all other PED users.

How can the fight be allowed to go ahead?

Who takes the official decision to ban a fighter for being a drug cheat, we have no world governing body, we have several organisations.
We have various national bodies, but we can hardly trust the Russian authorities to take action, can we?

Surely someone should be stopping fights like this going ahead? WBC refusing to sanction it clearly did nothing.

Here we have a guy who has twice in the run up to the same fight tested positive for banned substances, his opponent (who had tested positive himself) pulls out and a guy is allowed to step in on one days notice to fight this fornicator?

Boxing needs to have a long hard look at itself if it cannot stop these fights going ahead, as long as the fighters are willing to put themselves through this and there is someone somewhere willing to sanction it.

Naandrew wrote:Povetkin is an f*cking disgrace. I actually understood Ryabinskys reasoning behind what happened before the Cancelled Wilder fight but a second time DO ONE !!!!

Moscow is three hours ahead so right now there is still time for this fight to be called off. Why would Stiverne go ahead when he will probably get another chance to be Wilders mandatory if he pulls out.

This whole saga also goes to highlight that VADA are the only people who actually catch drug cheats and make people aware. It's not swept under the rug like UKAD.
Stiverne would be earning a career high purse against Pov, one hed be unlikely to earn against Wilder or Whyte. He could still get the money with a lawsuit, but winning that isnt a sure thing.

I wonder why this came about so late; surely the test results were known more than 12 hours before the fight?
I didn't have you down as a conspiracy theorist, mate lol.
What conspiracy have I suggested? I'm not saying that anything untoward occured, but I find it odd that the positive test wasnt known about until so late. Perhaps the results were in, but the WBC didnt announce it immediately so they could have more time to decide how to move forward, free of pressure from the media and the fighters?

12 hours before the fight just seems so late

Duhappas needs his head checked. Goes in on not even a days notice. Chap got about 5 hours notice for the fight against a roided Povetkin. Who is managing the guy?? It was never going to end any other way than him getting planted to the canvas for several minutes

It just read a bit like a conspiracy theory- if someone had said Freedom had written that I wouldnt have been surprised. Fair enough if you wernt alluding to that though.

And what would be questionable about him saying it? I wouldve thought these things are organized so that important test results are known more than 12 hours in advance of the fight.

Povetkins backer has big, big dough. 5 hours notice? I hope he took them for all he could. I would imagine he'd have pocketed by far the biggest purse of his career.

Not necessarily. It depends when the test was taken and also it could just be incompetence on the WBC's behalf in regards to releasing the results so late versus it being the WBC framing Povetkin- which is what I imagine freedom and the dude that loves Briggs probably believe.

Yes, some people are loony when it comes to the conspiracies here, but I think it's fair to question why it all came about so late.

Over the last few years Povetkin has morphed from a flabby, heavy-handed grinder to a relatively chiselled KTFO merchant with improved stamina. Suggestions of PED usage abounded even before the first test, and I think at this point it takes a special kind of person to deny that he's using. I will say that while there is a bit of a 'those dirty Russians' narrative to this incident, many fighters from around the world fail tests or are strongly linked to drug use (e.g. Evan Fields), and while the doping may be more systematic in Russia it's wrong to act like PED usage isn't a widespread, multinational issue.

Incidentally, I've seen some claims that AJ refused VADA testing for the Molina fight. Anyone know whether that's accurate?

Not Povetkins fault.

He just went on his holidays to Miami with Kid Galahads brother and ate Mexican beef.

Take your pick WBC. Money talks, they will make a excuse and he will be back in the mix in 6 months.

Deontay Wilder is my favourite heavyweight at the minute as he's the only one I rate who I believe is clean.

I agree, only in boxing.

Without a proper umbrella governing body boxing will and is moving itself towards an unlicensed and outlawed sport. Thats of our own doing the ones that love the game, let alone those who want it outlawed anyway. What if Povetkin killed the frenchman last night? What could possibly be the argument against banning the sport then?
Its fornicating mental, take Povetkins license away but more importantly take the fornicating promoters license away for finding a replacement on a few hours notice to go in with Povetkin instead of cancelling.
