Arguably his best win.. Who would you say was his best opponent.
It‘s a tough one that. Probably Toney, who had a pretty fearsome reputation when Jones fought him. I thought Jones would win that fight but I didn’t think it would be as one-sided as it was

Which was his best and/or defining win?

James Toney.

What was his best KO win?

Glen Kelly.

Regardless of win/loss.. Who was his best opponent?

James Toney.

I mentioned what I thought was his best win on Page 1.

His best KO win was definitely the Montell Griffin rematch when he flattened Griffin in 1.

His best opponent I'd say was James Toney.

Montell Griffin beat James Toney twice -- and they only fought twice.

After RJJ beat Toney.

Both of those fights were robberies. James Toney deserved the decision in both of those fights. The 1st one was close at least. The 2nd one Toney won clear, and they robbed him blind.

golden oldie wrote: 16 Dec 2017, 06:08 As for Jones' best opponent it has to be Glenn Johnson. Forget TKO's or stoppages by any other means. The guy put that boy to fukking sleep. End of. You can't put muscles on a chin, and Johnson exposed that reality as far as Jones was concerned.
I love Glen, but I don't think he was one of the best fighters that Roy fought exactly. He just caught Roy at a time when Roy was fading fast, and he wasn't prepared for the kinda fight Glen was bringing him. Glen kicking his ass was definitely a pleasure for me though as I liked Glen, and I was glad to see him finally get his recognition.

It's definitely the hardest I ever saw Roy knocked out no doubt about that. He was on the canvas for nearly 5 minutes or so. Even still to this day he hasn't been KO'd quite that hard again.

More importantly are you an adult, or a silly fanboy? Like or dislike has absolutely nothing to do with anything. FACT Johnson put Jones Jr to sleep for longer than any other fighter did. That FACT won't alter just because you or anyone else " likes " him.
I know the facts and no i'm not a silly fanboy, it was simply a question., I believe I read somewhere on these forums Gil mentioning he loved seeing RJJ on the canvas, that is why I was asking.

I don't think he was robbed blind, but I believe Toney was a better fighter than Griffin.... He won the Cruiserweight Title from undefeated Olympic Gold Medal winner Vasilly Jirov and had some great wins at Heavyweight... But Toney had the worst work ethic of any ATG fighter I've ever seen... He thought all he needed to do was show up... I think that's why he didn't get more separation in the Griffin scoring.

Great post. I agree.

For the record, James Toney fought, won and lost, multiple times, over several weight classes, with his toughest opponent. A guy he should never have lost to.

Himself.

Oh, and with respect to the OP and this excellent topic, I'm going with Lights Out, a stand-out among a few other stand-out foes on Roy's record.

I thought Toney's win in the 2nd Griffin fight was pretty clear. It's been a while since I watched it, but it was a clear 8 rounds to 4 victory at the worst.

I thought Toney won the 1st fight with Griffin narrowly as well, and yeah he's definitely a better overall fighter than Griffin.

If he were at his best he'd have definitely never lost to guys like Drake Thadzi that's for sure. For the record, I did think Thadzi deserved the nod over him. Toney really half assed it bad in that fight. Took him a while to get back to notoriety after that one. He was all, but written off until he performed well again against Jirov like 4 years later.

Toney is the clear choice.

Ruiz was a historic win for Jones, but Toney was obviously the far superior fighter.

And Toney also turned the trick, beating Ruiz convincingly, so it demonstrates who was a more accomplished fighter.

OKAY, who's the first guy here to cry "But Toney was juiced for the Ruiz fight. It doesn't count."

Definitely Toney in my book. 'Lights out' was a formidable fighter who was supposed to rule the division for years after winning the title. In many other eras, he would have.

Was he already on a slight decline by then? or had he outgrown 168 too much? Or was RJJ just too good for him that night.

So, if James Toney did not feel like he needed the steroids to beat John Ruiz then exactly why was he taking them?

I've been re- watching a lot of Jones' fights the last few days- bouts that I haven't watched in years, since they were on live television. To me, Toney was the best fighter Jones ever beat. As for his best performance, I choose the Hill fight because the ending was so devastating.

Best fighter he ever beat was Toney.

His most dazzling performances were against Virgil Hill and Richard Hall I thought.

The Antonio Tarver 1 win is in some respects one of his best because it's one of the only times he was ever pushed to his limits, and still found a way to win.

Very good point on the first Tarver bout. I had the Jones-Harding bout 4-4 after 8 and I really believe that Harding's injury prevented a very controversial decision from happening. Of course, Jones claimed he didn't train much for Harding.
