Virgil Hunter= The MOST OVERRATED Trainer ever
Re: Virgil Hunter= The MOST OVERRATED Trainer ever
Don't think he's overrated as nobody rates him other than a couple of forum members with an agenda. Virgil Hunter is unrated. Won't even reach the status of Jack Lowe.

How many plans do you think Engel and Brook went through against Spence? Plan A appeared to be an effective jab and to muscle him over in the clinch and wait for the later rounds. Or was the Plan B? I had Brook leading that fight at the halfway mark so it wasn't a horrible plan but it was the wrong plan as it turns out and they guessed wrong. Spence got stronger as the fight went on. I alway feel it's risky to bank on young boxers tiring. It seems so silly to me. You can just look at Spence and say this kids in fantastic shape and could go all day long if he had to. So I think I just proved myself wrong in this example. Not the first time.Kalan wrote:No. Actually bout 40% of plan A's work... About 9% of plan B's work... But if you need plan C or D, there's a sharply diminishing return on positive results.caldo2025 wrote:Honestly, i'd say 95% of the game plans created in camp by most trainers are thrown out after round 3.
If you're Anthony Joshua's coaching team 100% of your plan A's worked to date -- because I'm quite sure the last plan included the possibility of getting hurt... However they might have included the possibility of getting hurt under "plan B" you don't know for sure because you're not doing the game plans.. Anytime you move to plan B the ship is already taking on water and you're probably going to lose... You need a mini miracle.

George Benton was a great trainer. I got to watch him in the late 70s in Joe Fraziers gym when I first started boxing. He did wonders with Marvis Frazier when he was an amateur. The gym became the mecca of boxing gyms with top boxers from around the country coming to train there. Joe got greedy and raised all of the prices for amateurs, pro and trainers who had to pay a fee to coach there. A bunch of trainers left as did boxers. Benton went on to open his own gym and then later hooked up with Lou Duva who signed most of the '84 Olympic team. Benton became their trainer. Marvis won several national tittles but got KO'd in the Olympic trials when he got hit with a shot that messed a nerve up in his neck that required surgery. Once Benton left the gym and Marvis turned pro, Joe took over training him and changed his style to his which obviously did not work for him. He had a totally different style as an amateur under Benton and was quite successful.
