The Klitschko fight was shown free on the Ukrainian TV and on the Russian too. Since then AJ is frequently on the Russian TV.coghaugen11 wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 06:30 Yeah they always buy the PPV’s on a Sat night after bingo. With their pension money.

Definitely Bruno- he was adored. No internet in the 80s for most and his fights were on terrestrial tv

Everyone and their nan knew who Bruno was. Audiences are different now.

I think the first Bruno fight I saw was Witherspoon. 'Time's up for Tim,' and all that. I think I must have watched a replay on the Sunday morning on BBC. It was all totally prime time.Terminator666 wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 12:37 Definitely Bruno- he was adored. No internet in the 80s for most and his fights were on terrestrial tv

Yep, it was delayed for 9.30 in the morning on both BBC and ITV but live on Radio 2.polecateddy wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 14:11I think the first Bruno fight I saw was Witherspoon. Surely they showed it on live TV? Or did the promoter refuse as he wanted maximum ticket sales?Fray Bentos wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 14:12Yep, it was delayed for 9.30 in the morning on both BBC and ITV but live on Radio 2.polecateddy wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 14:11I think the first Bruno fight I saw was Witherspoon. The Americans bought the rights to show it night time over there so the fight started at 3 am London time - packed house at Wembley an all.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 14:37Surely they showed it on live TV? For some reason, the American TV rights holders wouldn't let British TV show the fight live but both BBC and ITV had the rights to delayed broadcast...
Some silly sausage TV announcer down in the south west of England announced the result of the fight before the actual fight was shown which made the yokels down there mad and nearly got her the sack

Wow I had no idea it was fought at 3am. I wonder what the viewing numbers were at 9:30 the next day?Fray Bentos wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 14:39The Americans bought the rights to show it night time over there so the fight started at 3 am London time - packed house at Wembley an all.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 14:37Surely they showed it on live TV? Re: Who do you think is bigger, Joshua or Bruno?
Most of the country watched the fight on delayed broadcast, world title fights back then were an uncommon sporting event in the UK and it was the first world heavyweight title fight in the UK since 1966. So, it was a very big deal at the time and a lot of people thought Bruno was going to win - the first British world heavyweight champion of the 20th Century.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 14:45Wow I had no idea it was fought at 3am. Re: Who do you think is bigger, Joshua or Bruno?
Thinking back it’s pretty clear that nationally Bruno was a big household name and people were palpably excited in the build up to Tyson 1. I don’t think Joshua has ever come close to achieving that, even if he’s obviously the better fighter.
Re: Who do you think is bigger, Joshua or Bruno?
Everyone watched terrestrial TV back then, not everyone has got Sky or social media now.
Re: Who do you think is bigger, Joshua or Bruno?
It's no contest. Bruno is a bigger name by a million miles.
People forget how big a name Bruno was back then.
Bruno is probably still better known with the general public in the UK today.

He’s not as good as Bruno was. Not a chance is he.polecateddy wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 15:09 Thinking back it’s pretty clear that nationally Bruno was a big household name and people were palpably excited in the build up to Tyson 1. Frank was outjabbing and outboxing Lennox Lewis for 6 rounds straight. Nearly had young Tyson out early.
Re: Who do you think is bigger, Joshua or Bruno?
The Lewis fight was closer than that. And he didn't even won the round, when he rocked Tyson, the situation was far from problematic for Mike.coghaugen11 wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 16:29 Frank was outjabbing and outboxing Lennox Lewis for 6 rounds straight. Nearly had young Tyson out early.

Re: Who do you think is bigger, Joshua or Bruno?
I personally feel the heavier late career Bruno was a bit too slow to be a top liner. But on the flipside I think there’s a more than reasonable chance the Tyson 1 and Lewis who beat Bruno would have also destroyed Joshua.DrDuke wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 16:34The Lewis fight was closer than that. Re: Who do you think is bigger, Joshua or Bruno?
I think that was right. Bruno had an awful start and had taken a knee. But then actually had decent hand speed at the mid 16 stone weight, and caught Tyson. And then cuffed him around till the end of the round. But it was clear Tyson was too fresh and lively to be stopped as it was round 1.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 18:09He never had Tyson is serious bother. Re: Who do you think is bigger, Joshua or Bruno?
I agree. There’s this monster myth that If Bruno had followed up he would’ve knocked out Tyson. Come on. Bruno was battered, landed one decent punch and that’s it.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑05 Oct 2021, 18:09He never had Tyson is serious bother.
