Oscar De La Hoya vs. Conor McGregor?
Re: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Conor McGregor?
Its the probably the most "sensible" of fights for Connor.
As amazing as it sounds - Connor is probably now the biggest PPV star in boxing... but in terms of ability is a unkown quantity at best and more than likely going to lose heavily to any world class talent. Connor vs DLH would probably generate as big numbers as Connor vs most 147/154 fighters and it is a fight that is winnable for Connor - so he could move on to have another big PPV payday.
Connor vs Malignaggi would sell okay (but not spectacularly) and if Connor lost that then it would be over for him boxing.... probably less of a risk for a greater reward vs DLH.

As a hardcore MMA fan... and a casual Boxing fan...
Here are the Conor McGregor match-ups that I want to see the most:
1. Canelo -- He gets smashed, so be it. MEXICO vs IRELAND is a rivalry I've always wanted to see blow up.
2. Nate Diaz III -- Love to see Nate finally win a Title. Trilogy has to be completed.
3. Jose Aldo II -- Was it a fluke? Lets get the answer. Aldo deserved the immediate rematch.
4-7. Oscar -- Would love to see Oscar back in the ring. Very interesting to see if Conor could be competitive.
4-7. Tony Ferguson -- The Best LW in the world vs Conor... to "unify the Titles"
4-7. Justin Gaethje -- Fireworks! Gaethje's a wrestler, but he's the kind a guy that'd choose to stand-n-bang.
4-7. Tyron Woodley -- WW Champ vs LW & FW Champ; Tough matchup but to watch Conor go for Titles in 3 Divisions... it's unthinkable in MMA!
8-10. Mikey Garcia -- Since Mikey is Boxing UFC* FW Champ, Max Holloway... I'd like Mikey vs Conor after that.
8-10. Jorge Masvidal -- Stylistically fun matchup vs a bigger guy
8-10. Cody Garbrandt -- Stylistically fun matchup vs a smaller guy
??. Paulie -- Could be a fun fight, but my interest is slowly evaporating as time passes.
??. Frankie Edgar -- Stylistically BAD matchup for Conor, but interesting to see what would happen
Mexican ginger vs Irish canelo(ish)

Re: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Conor McGregor?
Nobody here has yet correlated all of the obvious things. #1 Dana White and UFC is definitely doing boxing in 2018. #2 Connor gets into it with a ref in a staged series of incidents. #3 DLH calls him out launching his Golden Boy radio show. Dana is doing a deal with DLH. Besides the big fight there are many other deals happening. C Mac is not fighting MMA next. He is fighting DLH and it is behind doors but a done deal already. Add it all up.
Re: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Conor McGregor?
i dont see how ppl can be too confident in a 45 year old hard liver who hasnt fought in years. obviously mcgregor aint a world class boxer but he still has some talent for punching and isnt just some nobody from a boxerfit class. many great fighters have lost to ppl who couldnt hold their jocks back in the day, but oscar is way past the day now.
Re: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Conor McGregor?
Oscar would be far, far gone from his prime... Conor would bully him into a TKO.
Re: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Conor McGregor?
Woah, not sure about that Stu.
Does Connor against an average joe welterweight do more PPV than, say, AJ against an average joe HW.
Who does Mcgreggor box, PPV , at 154lbs that draws attention now
Re: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Conor McGregor?
Oscar De La Hoya and Paulie Malignaggi for starters... Possibly after that John Jackson...he could be promoted as a big bomber... It would depend on how fast and convincingly McGregor would be able to dispose of Oscar and Paulie.. I would have Conor taking baby steps for the first 2 years and 8 fights... Instead of the big giant step he took to start his boxing career... No Errol Spence for 3 or 4 years -- or maybe NEVER!!!
But there's money there for the grabbing if McGregor is smart and disciplined... EVERY boxer in the world would love to have his name recognition... It's like putting Dubya on the ballot because he's the son of President Bush.. Why NOT???? ... With naive voters how can you miss???
Re: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Conor McGregor?
Sorry state of affairs when McGreggor with a 0-1 boxing record draws attention and is deemed biggest draw in boxing by fighting either a 44 year old who's been retired for 10 years, or a 36 year old who retired after being KOd by sam eggington in his last fight.Kalan wrote: ↑24 Nov 2017, 16:56Oscar De La Hoya and Paulie Malignaggi for starters... Guess it is what it is
Re: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Conor McGregor?
You are absolutely correct Wales, but I was truly stunned with how popular McGregor is/was in the build up to the Mayweather fight. There were 10s of thousand in the media tour not to support Mayweather, not to hate on Mayweather, but to support McGregor.
Many Many boxing fans I would say turned off the TV or boycott the "joke" fight, there were many true boxing fans who bought Mayweather vs Canelo or Mayweather vs Pacquiao who refused to buy this fight. I really cannot imagine many boxing fans going "ok, I thought Mayweather vs Pac was going to be boring so I didn't buy, but I will buy the McGregor fight" - If this would have been Mayweather vs some no name, ranked novice then it would have done pretty poorly..... but it didn't, and you have to give McGregor's fan base the credit for that.... It smashed box office records and that was because of McGregor.
Mayweather isn't as big a star as he thinks he is. I already think Joshua (certainly in the UK) is a bigger star than Mayweather. Mayweather vs Berto (a decent fighter but not given a hope) didn't do that well. Mayweather still needs a big dance partner to make the records - and the biggest one he had was McGregor.
But yes, I agree McGregor also needs (at this stage) a big name to keep the interest going and if he loses to a "no name" than his star power will dimish very quickly. McGregor vs Peter McDonagh I don't think would do that well and if he lost to McDonagh then it would be cutains in terms of his star power. Malignaggi would be accetpable, but DLH would be the perfect dance partner - because, I feel, even if McGregor lost to DLH, his fans would still back him and support him in future fights - on paper his only 2 defeats would be against Top 40 all time great fighters.

Re: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Conor McGregor?
It’s the manner in how McGregor loses that’s key. An old Mayweather going through the motions and carrying him is one thing, but getting stopped by a mid 40’s, 15 years removed from his prime DLH would see McGregors stock drop massively.
It’ll happen eventually because he won’t retire and simply isn’t good enough to avoid a resounding beating at some point, be it in MMA and definitely in boxing.
Then it’s just left to his fake persona, hired motors and lairy clothing. Mind you, that’s what brought 80% of his fan base so maybe he’ll be fine even when he does get switched off!

Re: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Conor McGregor?
McGregor IS a boxer... How good he is is up for debate... Just as how good Oscar De La Hoya would be in a comeback fight is up for debate.
McGregor did a better job against Mayweather than I ever thought he could... But I predicted he'd win the 1st round... Just because his style is so difficult for Floyd.. Floyd took a lot of punches and he wasn't trying to get hit.. He was trying to avoid hits and was slow to get started.

Re: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Conor McGregor?
Technically, yeah. But I'll take it. It's at least something.
MMA is permeating the Boxing world more and more, and it's creating this cross-over stuff. Mikey is challenging Max Holloway, Robert is *training* Jose Aldo... I love it.
So maybe, just maybe, if Garcia is down and Conor is down... I'd love to see that Boxing match happen.
