If John had got some of those debatable decision losses as wins, it would have been interesting to see who he would have progressed to fight. No doubt he could have made a few more quid as well.
For a guy his size, his fitness was very very good!!

He gave a great example of how a fighter should deal with a much taller opponent the night he beat Fury

loads of really good examples, there are even more of these guys than I would have thought. I'm sure there are a few more names to come.

Great thread. Fury and Froch are really good examples.

Chuck in Sakio Bika. Always looked wild and off balance but don't think anyone ever had an easy night with him, landed a lot more than most on Ward

Indongo is technically awful. But had good wins to be a unified champion.

This is the first person that springs to mind for me also. Everyone who has trained with or around him seem to speak very highly of him also.

I know the film quality is poor and out of time but compared today how poor the footwork is, and unusual technique.

I understand they were pioneers and it was a different time. I wonder how fighters from today would struggle under the amount rounds, gloves, nutrition and different rules.

Zaragoza also beat Ray Gilbody in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, which was a fine achievement because Gilbody in 1980 was pretty potent. He destroyed Jim McDonnell in the ABA bantamweight final that year.

Two Italians, Vito Antuofermo and Gianfranco Rossi, who twice won jr. middleweight belts, defended about a dozen times, including winning seven title fights vs past or future belt holders, and yet was hard on the eyes, looked like he had extremely limited skills, no punch and was fragile. As it turns out, in 69 fights only Curry and Honeyghan really dominated him and he won 62 times

Rosi had been bombed out by Lloyd Honeyghan in 1985 and when Leicester's Chris Pyatt faced him two years later, he was overconfident and paid the price: Rosi handed him a points defeat. The canny Italian later upset the likes of Lupe Aquino and Darrin Van Horn in world title fights, although I still don't know how he lost to a shot Don Curry.

The Curry fight was a one-off, for both. Rossi was coming off one of his best performances, a one-side knockout win over former belt holder Duane Thomas. He looked brilliant in that fight. Showed more power than I ever saw from him. Curry was coming off a win-sided win over Aquino and looked, for one fight, and probably the last time, like the great welterweight he once was vs Rossi, dominating him from round one.
Rossi later won a title back and held it for five years, fighting his last legit title fight at nearly 38. He won but it ended up being changed to a no contest after he failed a drug test

This is a great choice. Rosi has loads of good results but is regarded as a chinny non puncher who's boring. He's been in some exciting fights weirdly and beat a lot of names / world Champs. He got absolutely iced by Lloyd. The Don Curry fight he showed a lot of heart, I think hurt Curry but got floored about 5 times. Also the Rosi Duane Thomas finish is brutal. Almost Mercer Morrison or Norton Cooney....

Remember that fight well. Thomas had a decent punch and I kind of figured he’d eventually get to Rossi but Gianfranco won every round and hit Thomas with everything he threw
