Hopkins has 19 title defenses, his No Contest result vs. Robert Allen when he fell out of the ring and did not want to continue does not count as a title defense.
Gennady passed Hopkins tonight.

Wasn't that good.
Re: Round-by-Round - Gennady Golovkin vs. Vanes Martirosyan - 5 May 2018
No it definitely wasn't that good.
It's a title defense though nonetheless.
Just like GGG's Draw against Canelo is a title defense.

That is not the definition of a no contest. The fight was not complete, hence it is a defense of nothing, and Hopkins was the one who didn't want to continue.gilgamesh wrote: ↑06 May 2018, 02:47He walked in as Champion. Ok. I don't care enough to keep arguing about it. I disagree, but whatever.

Re: Round-by-Round - Gennady Golovkin vs. Vanes Martirosyan - 5 May 2018
I made the last-minute decision to not stay up to watch the fight, since the outcome of the main event was inevitable, the quality of the undercard was poor, I was tired and I also had to wake up early to attend a fitness bootcamp.
It seems that I chose wisely (for once).

For a bit of impartial comparison, let's look at GGG and Hopkins' opponents BoxRec rating coming into their fights.
Golovkin's title defenses:
Martirosyan - 181
Alvarez - 1123
Jacobs - 371
Brook - 364
Wade - 189
Lemieux - 226
Monroe Jr - 126
Murray - 231
Rubio - 156
Geale - 303
Adama - 122
Stevens - 109
Macklin - 201
Ishida - 84
Rosado - 164
Prokda - 160
Fuchigami - 130
Simon - 63
Ouma - 83
Tapia - 60
Record: 19(18)-0-1
Average opponent rating: 222.3
Hopkins' title defenses:
Eastman - 257
De La Hoya - 492
Allen - 182
Joppy - 328
Hakkar - 139
Daniels - 126
Trinidad - 1277
Holmes - 578
Echols - 147
Vanderpool - 161
Echols - 150
Allen - 211
Allen - 178 (no contest)
Brown - 138
Council - 102
Johnson - 52
Jackson - 98
James - 34
Lipsey - 103
Frank - 31
Record: 19(12)-0-0(1 no contest)
Average opponent rating: 239.2
Overall I'd say the strength of their opposition is very comparable, as is reflected by their average rating 239 for Hopkins, 222 for GGG. Being the bigger puncher, GGG has stopped more of his opponents, while Hopkins has the advantage of having dominated and stopped his best opponent (Trinidad), while GGG had a close decision win over Jacobs and a controversial draw with Canelo (personally I call it a robbery and generally consider it a good win for GGG, though clearly not as good as Hopkins' performance against Tito). Overall I would rate Hopkins very slightly higher as a middleweight, but due to his light heavyweight antics, he is much higher in an all-time p4p sense.

Re: Round-by-Round - Gennady Golovkin vs. Vanes Martirosyan - 5 May 2018
Classic GGG big "drama" show: Golovkin chased his opponent, took some absolutely unnecessary shots, battered the opponent. It was not his fault probably, as Canelo was suspended. So, everything that everyone want for the moment is Canelo vs GGG 2 in september apparently.

dropped.

Roided Canelo would beat Tito at 160.Mexi-Box wrote: ↑06 May 2018, 01:30You're looking at hindsight, and if you want to go with a microscope over the Tito win, you'd have to do the same with Canelo. I'm not counting that joke fight against JCC Jr. either.boxing_rocks wrote: ↑06 May 2018, 01:19So, you are comparing Tito who jumped two weight classes in 2 years with huge roided Canelo who refused to engage?
They are comparable. Tito is a better fighter than Canelo, period.

If you want to get picky and include all those meaningful defenses of interim and "regular" championships. Not exactly the type of stuff that makes for a legend.pound per pound wrote: ↑06 May 2018, 02:37

If he stands up to Golovkin's shots, then he would deal with Tito's.
And it's very very questionable whether Trinidad has the chin to survive Canelo's bombs at 160.

If you're offered it, and you're a veteran with a questionable long term future, you take the opportunity.

A good payday for a guy who has never been an elite fighter or an attraction.

He earned $400k for the second Lara fight. $225k isn't bad, but there's a bit of a difference between fighting Lara and fighting Golovkin.SenorPipino wrote: ↑07 May 2018, 22:51I've seen about $250,000.jpspice wrote: ↑07 May 2018, 22:49How much did he make?SenorPipino wrote: ↑06 May 2018, 20:15

Saying that, I doubt he would have had any better offers recently. Most likely, he was hoping if he could do slightly better than expected here, he might attract more money later on, challenging at 154.

Retirement is an option I'm sure he ponders. The offers won't flood in after a poor showing in a high profile bout.
Not even at 154. He'll be a hard sell as a viable big fight opponent because everyone will remember him as the guy who went out quickly. Martiroysan won't be taken seriously.
