My anger at Jones is not envy or denial, it is simply frustrating that such a supremely talented individual left what should have been an inevitable inclusion into Boxing greatness to chance. Too many easy paydays may have cost him IMO...he just didn't have the defining fights to quite make it. And it's a travesty.

well put
no one can doubt RJJ's talent. many doubt his heart and his willingness to step in with the best
In the end, I suspect it is good for boxing for him to be "found out" by two good solid pro's

Why on earth Jones came back down to face Tarver I'll never know. He had a good chance of beating Byrd to unify two heavyweight belts, and a rematch with Toney would have been a big event to close out his career with.

Just a note on the knockout.
Roy was fine after about 12 seconds. He just led on the floor with his eyes shut to try and come to terms with what had just happened to him. He wasn't in as bad a way as it may have appeared.

I don't think it was a case of being "found out" - or suspect chin as some website writers are claiming ( sweetscience.com ).
I doubt anyone who beats Toney, Hopkins and Ruiz ( who'd floored Holyfield remember ) has a weak jaw.
He either had a very good chin, or is the luckiest person who ever lived.
He should'nt have his legacy tarnished for these losses, anymore than Ray Leonard should for losing to Norris and Camacho.
Roy just got old.
It's often pointed out he never fought Benn and Eubank. But I don't remember those two calling out Jones very often, or Toney for that matter.

yeah, Jones got "found out"...
I remember Trevor Berbick finding out Ali for the no skilled big mouth he was
Marciano showed what a fraud that Joe Louis was aswell
infact Marciano also showed what a china chinned bum Jersey Joe Walcott was too.
In modern times Toney showed how Holyfield was a blown up cruiserweight who couldnt hold a body shot
BOLLOCKS
JONES GOT OLD END OF STORY!!!!!!!!!!!
He has been boxing since he could walk, his dad had him training many hours a day before he was a teenager..... he has had 50 pro fights, 15 years..... hundreds of amateur fights... jumped up weight divisions and then jumped back down

fair enough "found out' may be too harsh
Let's just say I think it apt that he reached the end of the road against good solid pro's

Having seen the fight, I would just like to back up the comments that Jones is a legend and wasn't even at 60% of what he was.
However, I do think some props should be given to Johnson, he won the fight. Whilst it was sad to see Jones in decline, I do geniunally belief it has more to do with weight making issues than age (note, this isn't going to be a post about Jones' legacy being tarnished, thats set in stone).
What I would like to say, is what I saw of Jones he looked pretty much the same fighter who struggled in a points victory over Tarver. There was no strength, no stamina, no snap with his punches. I mean, this is a guy who hurt John Ruiz now he can't budge a bulked up Super Middle.
However, the 60% version of Jones that we see now WAS good enough to sneak the Light Heavyweight title from Tarver (I scored it for him by 2), Tarver refused (wasn't capable?) to do enough to win the majority of the rounds and just layed on the ropes himself while Jones rested. So, this version of Jones was good enough to beat the so called #1 Light Heavyweight. However, Johnson did a far better job than Tarver and BEAT UP Jones - this should be applauded.
Unlike Williams vs Tyson, the 60% version of Jones that we see now, SHOWED last year that he can win against the best in the devision, however the facts are Johnson did a far better job than Tarver did - and he should be given some credit.
As for they're future, well I am still shocked that Jones accepted that Tarver rematch. He created history by moving back down the weights and beating the #1 ranked guy. He said he would never fight at Light Heavy again and I thought he would have had more sense. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Roy make one more effort at the Cruiser or Heavyweight title again - I honestly believe although he'll never be the fighter he once was, we could see Jones back up to the 70-80% of what he was if he campaigned at a higher weight.
Johnson should be looking for Tarver, on the evidence of last night - its a fight he can win.

i am thrilled for Glen Johnson. Long before he came over here to fight Clinton I was posting on forums saying how unlucky he was... never getting decisions. couldnt happen to a nicer guy.
Tarver on the other hand gets no love from me, was always shouting his mouth off then nearly got knocked out in an eliminator fight by Eric Harding

Also, why did that genius referee decide to give Jones the full ten count? He'd just gone down hard, banging the back of his head on the canvas - obviously out for the count.
Did he think he was going to suddenly spring back up again?

That pissed me off too, the problem with american refferees is they don't look after the health of hte fighters as they should. I have seen it time and again.
In terms of his legasy all this talk of him being exposed is crap, put simply look at the title fights he has been in. That is not someone with anyone to hide. He just carried on too long.
Just to remind you:-

I feel for Jones
a fighting legend but he is a shadow of himself and there was nothing there Saturday night. His reflexes and stamina are 'gone'. His speed is there in bursts but I really hope he gives up now. His legacy is slightly tarnished after the two kos but his career is up there with the greats

I feel for him. He won't be able to go round bragging about how good he is any more.

No way was it a 100% Jones in that ring, the wry smiles were purely bravado...he knew there was something wrong...whether that be old age or what then so be it.
Respect to Glen Johnson, he has had some dire decisions given against him and with the right promotion and management could have been a world champ sooner and longer. He has done it the hard way...anyone who has beaten him suddenly has a really good name on there record! I am sure Johnson was unbeaten when Hopkins stopped him, that looks excellent form on Hopkins record now. How on earth did Ottke beat him?! I cannot see how the tame but slippery German kept a marauding Johnson at bay but somehow he did

Steve,
The Ottke vs Johnson fight was a legitimate victory for the German aswell. I have seen bits and although competitive, the edge for most of these rounds I was scoring for the German.

Yeh fair enough mate i have not seen it so i cannot dispute the win for Ottke, i think it was in the days where Ottke actually did something in his fights...in his prime he was a good fighter. I heard that Steve Holdsworth questioned the decision.

I have to say, Jones was even worse than the 1st tarver fight, he was so leaden legged it was unbelievable.
As good as Johnson is, I can see the way to beat him, and that's movement and an accurate jab, he's a very good pressure fighter, but someone who can use the angles like Ottke did, or Jones used to
Jones would have really danced all around him. there was one point in the fight where Jones turned Johnson and drilled him with 3 shots in succession, but that was it, one point in the entire fight where jones used movement. 2 Years ago he would have done that round after round, nailing Johnson on the way in, and probably busting him up late.
I have nothing but respect for Johnson, and he earned the right to face Jones and make a massive name for himself, but he was in the right place at the right time. Jones' confidence and physical attributes were gone, i think it was also noticable that jones was unwilling to commit himself.

I think you have summed up the fight perfectly, good post
