They will do whatever makes the most money. I fear we may see the dreaded champion emeritus bollocks. It would certainly allow them to collect the maximum sanctioning fees, whilst allowing Hopkins to pick and choose his opponents for the remainder of his career, as the emeritus doesn't have to defend their mandatories for 18 months as I remember.
Christ, it must have been a piece of piss writing about boxing back when there was 1 champ in each division. I have a hard time keeping track of what the fornicate is going on most of the time.
I mean, who the hell can tell me with any certainty what is going to happen in the middleweight division in the next year, despite the fact that we have unified belts, the mandatory position is held by a guy who came back from a two year layoff, the guy who was the mandatory for well over a year is scheduled for an eliminator, but the guy who is in it with him doesn't appear at all interested.
