So the woman bobsleigher was recommended by a panel of experts over Tyson Fury and Ronnie O'Sullivan.
I am sure that the process had nothing to do with the pairs f*** the establishment mentality and bbc snobbery, but maybe that the expert panel contained a few eskimo's.
She is the most successful winter Olympian from Britain, the most successful skeleton person from any nation in the world, back to back Olympian.
So yes I'd say her achievements massively outstrip those of Tyson.

All credit to her achievements and I am completely uneducated in throwing myself down an icy cliff on a serving tray,
But how many children from how many countries get the opportunity to compete in such a sport, even if they wanted to?
When has a Skeleton winner been mentioned in the same breath as the the Heavyweight champion of the world?

But it doesn't matter how popular it is, it is based on the achievement treating all sports the same platform.
I can understand Ronnie o Sullivan being pissed, but Tyson isn't the heavyweight champion of the world.
How much sponsorship does Tyson get from various places to allow him to never have to do anything other than train and box?
The Olympians get nothing in comparison.

I agree to some degree, but all sports are not equal, you cannot compare a niche sport with limited access to the non elite with a sport with global appeal, participation and access to nearly all.
You'll also find a large percentage of British Olympic meddle winners come from middle class private schooling, as are the bbc selectors.

Yes, I feel Fury would have been a tad fortunate to get be awarded it. Perhaps a special recognition award for raising mental health awareness but really he would have been fortunate as many considered Joshua the #1 anyway.
What a speech he gave though, this new Mature Tyson can really be a role model for others. I've always followed Tyson through closed fingers and cringed at the comments - but my god if he can keep this up... he could really be a role model - it doesn't matter about his fighting style. If he can stay as "humble" (sorry Joshua) pre fight as he since Wilder, then we could have a new Bruno in terms of popularity. Amazing that when goaded by Lineker to say something controvesial to AJ - he just didn't bite. Give me this Fury over Joshua any day of the week.... I know his comments about not having tattoos was considered controvesial a few months back, but I think what he meant was he is now a type of person who you could take to your parents and feel proud to call a mate. Seeing him since Wilder I complete get what he meant by that now, at the time I was fuming because I'd rather be associated with someone who has a few tattoos than someone who done all kinds of drugs (including performance enhancing) and has said some of the crass comments he has in the past. Now I think his behaviour during and especially since Wilder has given that statement more context. Just hope he keeps it up for his own sake.
Ronnie O Sullivan - I am a massive admirer of his abilities and had he won the Worlds then yes, Snooker is really about the Worlds in most people's eyes - so I think him being nominated would have been like Alistair Cook. Both successes also came very late in the Calendar year - so organising might have also been problematic.

In some ways I would say Lizzie Yarnold's achievements have outweighed many on that list. Yes it is a niche sport, which in some ways makes it more difficult. I don't know many Skelton tracks in the UK. Its not a case of her just lying on a baking tray.... she was a pretty damn good sprinter and for her to invest the time and money to hone in on the technique is pretty remarkable. Yes, I am sure lots have labelled her a "failed" sprinter - but then many of the greatest athletes are "failed" in their first sporting love.
Yes, boxing is more global - so yes there are going to be more competition.... but at the same time, the resources are much easier to get access too. Every town will probably have a boxing club.
The one "winner" that bugs me is Zara Phillips..... and no its not because it wasn't warranted (although not the year Calzaghe outclassed Lacy)..... has anyone tried to ride a blooming horse..... it is bloody hard. Yes, the priveledged may get opportunities but it is a skill to control an aminal in such a way. I always feel the criticisms of her winning was unjustified.

I remember the arguments at the time, but wasn't she European (maybe World?) champion at the time? - I had no problem with her winning.
I understand about elitism etc. but nobody really mentions that when an F! driver wins etc.

The BBC is a horrid organisation, someone we knew worked there and said practically everyone one was bullied by someone and yes 90% of people were from private education, not to mention they covered up one of the biggest noncing scandals in British history. Fcuk the BBC!

The shortlist was drawn up by bbc pundits and posh journalists.
Fury was never going to make the cut unfortunately.
McGuigan was one of several ex sportsman on the panel as well.
I assume he put Fury’s name forward but wasn’t championed enough by the others. Asher-Smith is a little star in the making but fact is she’s won second rate athletic gold medals so far. The Europeans and commonwealths aren’t the world champs or Olympics.
James Anderson is being nominated for his wicket record. The rest sort of deserve to be nominated to be fair. Yarnold and Hamilton compete in middle class sports and are deserving anyway. Tour De France, nuff said. Harry? He’s a genius and football is sport in this country.
I’m very surprised an English womens footballer wasn’t in the line up ( the bbc obsessed with that bollocks ) or a netball player didn’t make it. I guess they can’t slip people in from sports where about 65 people take part.
Regarding F1 being a middle class sport you'll find the best driver in terms of wins and championships(Schumacher) is actually a working class lad who is the son of a bricklayer, Raikkonen is the son of a road worker, Alonso the son of a mechanic, Hamilton's dad worked several jobs to fund his sons career, Surtees was the son of a floor worker at Triumph, Jim Clark was a working class farm boy, Hakkinens dad was a taxi driver etc.
Motorsport is a more of a location thing than a money thing, obviously a kid from inner city is unlikely to have as much access to racing circuits as those who live in the sticks just like people in rural environments don't have access to boxing gyms, you go through the British Superbike paddock and they're all builders, mechanics, plumbers etc. It's more about sponsorship than being a toff, my daughter's a motocrosser and I'm not minted by any means.

Surely that makes it even bloody harder to make it to the top of the game if you are from a country that has no actual facilities for the sport you compete in?
For Tyson to get nominated without achieving anything in the game would be mental.
Yes he came back but he didn't win(he did to many), but he didn't reach the pinnacle of his sport. The others did.

I know this won't go down well on here, but why does Tyson deserve to nominated for a sporting award given his achievements in the sport this year amount to 2 wins over nobodies and a draw(incorrectly but still a draw)
Lewis Hamilton has won his 5th world title
James Anderson become the highest wicket taking seamer in history
Geraint Thomas won the hardest race on earth
Harry Kane won the golden boot at the world cup & took us to a semi final.
Fury's comeback is more about his fight outside the ring which isn't what SPOTY is about.
For a boxer to win it they have to produce something special given calzaghe & Lewis were the last 2 winners the sport had.
Doesn't the term 'personality' transcend the actual sport? Fury is a character and he's done amazingly well coming back from what he did.
I'm not sure of the criteria that needs met to win this award tbh. I just remember a Royal horse rider won it before
Am pretty sure it doesn't mean actual personality otherwise Andy Murray would never win the thing.
What I believe it is, is the person who has achieved the most in there respective field which Tyson didn't this year.
However if he has a rematch with wilder, wins and then defends the title V AJ and wins that then he'd be a shoe in no doubt.
Aye Murray is a fuckin wet lettuce ain't he
