Another keep busy fight for Ward. These last 2-3 years of his career seem to have been completely wasted.

He should have kicked on after those British title fights in 2017.

Not sure if people are turned off by his record of only 4 stoppages in 29, but he can be an absolutely beautiful boxer on his day

It’s so sad to see Tommy stagnating. That win in America gave him some huge exposure and was a brilliant display. Matchroom not moving him properly and I’ve no idea why as he’s the best pure boxer in the country.

SCOTNEY: I’M GOING TO ENJOY EVERY MINUTE OF IT: Worth the wait. That is the feeling of Ellie Scotney as she prepares to trade leather for the first time as a professional this weekend.

The 22-year-old had been scheduled to make her highly-anticipated professional debut on the undercard of the David Avanesyan-Josh Kelly European Title showdown at The O2 at the end of March.

Lockdown got in the exciting Londoner’s way but almost seven months on, her first contest is finally here as she faces Swindon’s Bec Connolly over six rounds in Peterborough, live on Sky Sports and DAZN.

“I’m just looking to get in there, I’m buzzing,” said Scotney. “It’s second time lucky after the first one got called off, I’m just grateful for the opportunity given the world we’re in at the moment.”

A smile is never far away from the bubbly Adam Booth-managed Featherweight who hopes to impose her thrilling style on the pro game.

“I like to do a bit of both, but I do like to get involved! I hope I don’t disappoint the fans, I do like to fight but hope I can be smart with it. I had 40 fights as an amateur and boxed all over the world.

“But pro boxing is a different game and I feel my style and my character is going to suit that, I just can’t wait to get in there. A career is short-lived so I’m going into it to enjoy every minute of it and make the most of everything.”

A highly-accomplished amateur, Scotney was tipped for an Olympic place in Tokyo but instead signed a long-term promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

Standing in her way at the East of England Arena is the experienced Connolly (3-7), who has fought a number of top girls including Terri Harper, Natasha Jonas and Rachel Ball. So what is Ellie expecting?

“I’m ready for a top Beccs turning up, I wouldn’t expect anything less,” she said. “I’m well prepared and ready to get down to work. Two weeks ago I handed in my resignation at B&Q, I think they were happy to receive it. This is the next chapter.”

Lewis Ritson believes having no crowd in attendance could lead to a better performance in his fight against Miguel Vazquez this weekend.

Ritson (20-1, 12 KOs) makes his highly-anticipated return to the ring when he faces former world champion Vazquez (42-9, 16 KOs) on a Matchroom Boxing show live on Sky Sports and DAZN.

Usually, thousands of passionate Newcastle fans would be cheering Ritson on, but he thinks not having that extra pressure on his shoulders could be a positive.

Ritson said: “I’m ready more than ever. The next step is trying to get past Vazquez. If we can get past him, then I will start mentioning the other names. I’ve been sparring a lot of good fighters which has been great, and I’m expecting a really good performance on Saturday.

It will be weird with the fans not being there, but that means there is less pressure on me and I’ll put on a better performance. We won’t go out there looking for the stoppage, we’ll just see how the fight goes.”

Saturday’s bill also features world-ranked Thomas Patrick Ward (29-0, 4 KOs) as he looks to move one step closer to a world title shot when he faces Thomas Essomba (10-6, 4 KOs).

Ward said: “I’ve had a change of opponent but it doesn’t matter who I’m fighting. I’m focused and ready to go on Saturday. Every fight has to be won, it doesn’t matter the calibre of opponent.

“I’m pushing for a world title and I believe I’ll beat any of the world champions. I’ve got a good fight on my hands on Saturday against Essomba and then in 2021 the aim is to get that world title shot.”

He was robbed against Ohara though in fairness.

I think Vazquez is a live underdog in this fight. We saw when Ritson lost that he struggled against movers and we could find out here how much he’s improved.

Wouldn’t be shocked if Vasquez beats Ritson. He’s near the end of his career but he might just pull out a decent performance and outbox Ritson.
