Watched it again managed to find a reasonable quality video. Looked to me like Arthur suffered a concussion in the 1st and couldn’t get back set again. Woeful refereeing at the end tho. On the first knockdown Arthur gets back up too quick, the ref gestures ‘raise your gloves for me’ he keeps his hands by his sides and the ref just waves it back on. He then gets pancaked again, gets up too quick and the ref says something and Arthur stumbles forward clearly still off balance and all over the place. The ref waves it on again and then Arthur ends up laid out flat on his back and badly hurt.

Fair play to McCrory for saying it how it was after the end of the fight. Tough job being a ref and thankless but Jesus wept.

The fight should have been stopped after the 2nd knockdown. There are legitimate grounds for stopping it at certain points in the fight where Gomez really puts a beating on Alex too.

Arthur had a very good second round. He looked sharp and controlled the round, landing some good shots. I think it was the left hook that got him going near the start of the third that did it. That was great technique and punch placement from Gomez. His upper body movement in this fight is superb. I don't see how Arthur keeps him off. Gomez will make the fight a gruelling war every time and Arthur doesn't have the head movement or defense to cope.

Yes, he got four years for assisting an offender.

Arthur had a huge weakness to left hooks, very often he would overcommit to a left hook to the body and get caught with a counter left hook to the jaw. Gomez' best punch was his left hook

yeah, AA has too many fundamental flaws, too upright, trying to exit to the side with his hands down or backing straight up/etc, to cope with Gomez if he was on good form IMO, like you say if Gomez's upper body movemwent was on point i think AA just too open and too fragile.

Arthur looked really tidy offensively there at times, but dude just could hardly avoid a punch

Gomez was pure ‘Box Office’. Sadly while it was his tough upbringing that made him the fighter he was, the ‘demons’ from that childhood, and the circles he was mixing in, ensured he never maximised his talent.

It’s a bit like the Mike Tyson story played out on smaller scale in some ways with Brian Hughes playing the Cus D’Amato figure. Mike and Anth Farnell were the true ticket sellers in Manchester and laid the groundwork for the Ricky Hatton phenomenon that followed in terms of big gates in Manc etc.

Just wish Mikey held it together for longer. Was really bad on the drink and sniff for most of his career and once witnessed him doing the sign of the cross after knocking a tickler into him in some moody boozer. He was away with it that night.

He had the talent to be a serious world champion and would be a millionaire now had he not burned the candle at both ends. In the end talent alone can only do so much. But it was still a decent career and we will always have Arthur in Edinburgh. I got 10/1 on him winning by KO/TKO that day and it remains one of the best nights of my life.

I’m gonna have to look for that fight but I swear I remember Kevin Mitchell being interviewed afterwards and thinking to myself ‘he looks positively fat. He ain’t trained properly.’
