Bika turned out to be no joke. I still maintain he gave ward one of his toughest nights. Brutal fight, headbutts, elbows the lot. He was as tough as they they come. Stepped up to light heavy vs Stevenson......no one was ever gonna stop him. Ended up winning the WBC. Him vs Froch would have been a real war.
Froch would be too big.Too strong. For Sakia Bika. Just like he would be for GGG
Bika turned up to a Froch post-fight press conference with his strap and Carl just took the piss out of him, I think he said "I've got one of those belts at home" or something like that. Bika didn't really have any salesman in him and couldn't come back with anything. I can't remember what fight it was, maybe Bute? Anyway I remember feeling sorry for Sakio thinking that finally he was a 'champ' and might get himself that big payday. Froch faced an awful lot of good fighters though, so Bika's scalp wouldn't have meant that much.

Carlos Palomino coming here and beating John H Stracey.
"It was a voluntary defense by Stracey, not a command one, and, to be perfectly honest, we picked what we took to be a competitive, saleable, but least dangerous opponent for Stracey. We were never more wrong." - Mickey Duff.
Duff was also the man who picked Dick Tiger (already nominated in this thread) to fight Terry Downes.
Where Duff and his team were such good matchmakers when they got it wrong it really showed. Bonecrusher Smith, Buster Drayton, Dick Tiger, Carlos Palomino

And nobody except in Argentina knew Carlos Monzon when he came and beat Nino Benvenuti in Rome...of course he was only one of the top 10 of all time (ok at least top 20) but nobody knew before that..

Christ I've just looked at Tiger vs Downes, Terry was just a two fight novice at the time
That sort of matchmaking reminds me of Rafael Marquez being thrown in with Victor Rabanales on his debut.

And so did JMM.. Made his debut in 1988 I think. Lost.. then 2 years later came back and the rest is history.

Downes famously said after the fight, when asked who he'd like to fight next, " The f@cker who made that match"

Johnny Nelson was 3-10 in the ams, lost his first 3 pro fights and ended up being the longest reigning cruiser weight champion.

Baby Jake Matlala who turned out to be the smallest world champion in history (149cm)
Had previously been beaten by Dave McCauley
Went over to Scotland to win the world title off Clinton in Glasgow and defending it against Francis Ampofo losing it in SAfrica before dropping down in weight and beating Weir in Glasgow before stopping the likes of Cantwell in London and again was an underdog halting MIchael Carbajal in Las Vegas

Kirkland Laing had an Indian Summer in the late eighties and won the EBU title and was in line for a world title shot (hurrah) and then ended up getting knocked out by someone called Buck Smith - some dude from Oklahoma where the sanctioning body is a man who rides a horse and JR Ewing.
He won every round and then Buck Smith chins him in the seventh round and bye bye world title shot
Went onto have a million fights afterwards, ending up at cruiserweight.

I remember seeing Cesar Cuenco win an eliminator against Mensah. Than he won the title beating Ik Yang.
He was 48-0 everyone was comparing him to Mayweather. Donβt think heβs won since Troyanovsky beat him twice.
Never seen a 48-0 record come out of nowhere like that before.
Both Chudinov brothers seemed to come out of nowhere. Not much hype anywhere and they were both popping up over here. Both decent aswell to be fair. Especially Fedor. He seemed to have such slow hands but his arm punches had an effect.
