You’re right, it is a crappy fight. There’s no denying that.

But to be fair, DAZN hasn’t sanctioned any of the names that GBP have proposed. And I think this has more to do with their reluctance to fork out a guaranteed $33½m per bout (as per his eleven-fight $365m+ long-term deal). There's clearly a financial and a contractual dispute that needs to be resolved before we get the opportunity to see Canelo fight again.

I feel that DAZN might lack funds, due to the consequences the COVID-19 pandemic has had on their business.

And let’s not forget that DAZN previously signed-off on GGG choosing to face the anonymous, unheralded and unaccomplished Steve Rolls instead of exploiting his mandatory challenger status to compete for the WBO world middleweight title held by Demetrius Andrade (despite Andrade & Golovkin being network stablemates). This was the first bout of GGG's $100m deal with DAZN and Gennadiy was clearly allowed to engage in an easy risk-free payday outing.

In my mind, Canelo facing a fighter that has been the long-term mandatory challenger for the vacant WBC world super-middleweight title, Anvi Yildrim, is far better than GGG facing a complete nobody in a meaningless 164lbs catchweight non-title bout.

Anyway, it's a moot point, because Canelo probably won't be facing Yildirim anytime soon anyway.

If you're honestly so obtuse as to need this explanation: Fighting the occasional nobody is less irritating from a champion who fights 5 or 6 times a year than it is from a champion who fights once or twice a year.

Not everything has to be a GGG comparison. Things can just suck and we can demand better programming just like dazn is doing

It does if it highlights obvious instances of double standards being applied.

I will always cite instances of people holding different fighters accountable to different standards, no matter how inconvenient those truths may be.

For the record, I already have a list of other fan favourites, normally immune to criticism, that have engaged in blatant mismatches.

The truth hurts others even if you’re it doesn’t bother you.

And my comments were aimed at others, not you.

More examples of fight fans awarding their favourite fighters free passes:

• GGG chose to vacate his IBF world middleweight title rather than face Sergiy Derevyanchenko, because he preferred to fight Vanes Martirosyan (a man that never beaten a top fighter, had been inactive for two years, wasn’t even a middleweight and had only won one fight in within the previous 3½ years).

• Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. (65 – 0) and WBC super lightweight champion) scored a third round KO over Ramon Aramburu (0 – 1). There’s no justification for this appalling bout being allowed to take place, due to health and safety reasons.

• The world heavyweight champion, Joe Louis (54 - 1), stopped Jonny Davis (3 – 3) during the very first round of their contest.

• Roy Jones Jr. (62 – 9) stopped Vyron Phillips during the second round of their contest. Phillips was making his pro debut in that fight and never fought again.

• Larry Holmes (the unbeaten WBC world heavyweight champion) scored a first round KO over ten fight novice, Marvis Frazier, whose only claim to fame was a victory over a well past-his-prime version of Joe Bugner.

• Larry Holmes also defended his WBC world heavyweight title against Scott Frank (who was the 1983 equivalent of Mark De Mori), who’s superficially-impressive unbeaten resume was padded with victories over opponents that had failed to win many fights (i.e. 21 fighters failing to win a total of 219 bouts). After losing to Holmes, Scott Frank retired after engaging in two more fights (against foes with a combined record of 12 wins from 33 bouts).

It seems this thread is getting more action from the double standards police than anyone really blasting Canelo himself, really it hasnt been that bad for Nelo at all tbh

I've provided many more examples in this thread. Either address those examples individually or remain silent.

It's clearly not a case of 'one shoe fits all' type excuses with the examples I've provided, :OhYes:

You definitely read some of my examples of fighters that definitely don't compete five or six times per year, so your response is utterly bizarre, unless you don't know very much about GGG?

I DEMAND that DAZN explain their hypocrisy if they refuse this match!

the phrase 'manufactured outrage' comes to mind :shame:

Let's not pretend DAZN are upholding any kind of integrity for the sport.

They know its a sh!t match up and people won't be interested. They need to make enough money to pay the boxers and profit from the occasion, and Canelo-Yildrim won't get them very far.

Fair play to them for not just bending over backwards to accomdate Alvarez's demands, but it's all about money at the end of the day.

Its not like DAZN arnt going to let him fight if he realy wants to, they are just going to renegotiate how much for instead of the usual amount. There not going to give him 35 million to fight yildirim, and righfully so. They put in there contract that that fights must be approved by them, otherwise canelo could of just fought 10 binmen and got 350 million...

Like i said earlier i thought they would approve it, because although its a trash fight, canelo geting the 168 WBC belt will improve future revenue for the rest of the fights left on contract, but thats there call to make.

So I assume DAZN is probably gonna be a thing of the past by this time next year huh?

Maybe HBO Boxing can make a comeback or something.

Since FMJ showed the blueprint to maximize his profit, now every fighter is following this blueprint demanding more money that can't be generated. The thing is that FMJ knew how to promote himself very well and he also fought big names, so the money was there through PPV's, tickets sales, etc.
