Frank Bruno
You just can't help but like Frank. Even after he left Joe sagging against the ropes that night (someone loosened them) :x
Can't remember if they televised it live here but distinctly remember watching the ending and Jeff Fenech walking past Frank to get to Joe. Fenech had gone over mainly to give him some moral support. He brushed against Frank on the way and for a minute there I thought it was gonna be a free for all (no chance of getting out alive from that one)

Yes! I was in the crowd that night... great night.KOJOE90 wrote:Yes I remember, that was a massive fight in the UK and shown live on free TV. Ah those were the days.bollox wrote:Can anyone remember the crowd for the Bugner fight? It was a monster![]()
Yes, big Frank used a lot of weights in his training regime.bollox wrote:Did Frank do much weight training? Can't recall ever reading that he did
But I think the crowd for his fight against Witherspoon was even more of a monster... I was there too and the atmosphere was something else... even when frank lost!... 8) ....great days!
It may make he himself want to get back in shape and start fighting again.KOJOE90 wrote:That a thought that has crossed my mind many times as well. I'm sure he could at least teach the basics of Boxing techniques or even get into the fitness and conditioning side of things.ABA Boxing wrote:Why dosent Bruno coach Amateurs or train Pros if he misses the Sport so much?
Best atmosphere I have ever experienced at a fight was at the NEC for the first Benn vs Eubank fight. Wow!! that was some night and fight.silkov wrote:Mcguigan vs Pedrosa wasn't bad either!KOJOE90 wrote:I was there the night Bruno beat Carl 'The Truth' Williams it was a non-title fight but still a great atmosphere.8)
...never seen so many Irishmen in one place!... by the time I went home I was talking with a lilt!...

Bruno was ringside that night and got a great reception as did Terry Marsh and Michael Nunn.
Christ, you people are certainly taking some of us back to some heady days in boxing. Wasn't at any of the recently mentioned fights but certainly remember vividly the excitement that they created (any Bruno fight around the time, Benn - Eubank et al). Great days in British boxing
Unfortunately these days seem long gone
(Benn etc - top domestic figters actually fighting one another in grudge matches etc)

Frank did do weights, but according to his weight training schedule I saw in a book on figthers training regimes, he only did light weight training, not benching massive weights or anything like that. He did seem to gas, but that could have been mental as much as physical as Frank always fought very very tight. He never was able to really relax and let his hands go in fights.bollox wrote:Frank used weights? There's a part explanation for the stamina problem. He didn't seem to have had much natural stamina and the weights would have made the problem much worse. I'm surprised nobody told him to cut it out

Blaim Sky tv for the destrcution of the games popularity.
As simon block recently said, they've taken a national sport & marginalised it in 10 yrs.
You cant blaim ITV for not wanting to invest big bucks anymore in 1995 as Sky kept nicking their stars after ITV had made them big names.
If ITV had kept a stranglehold on the game Howard Eastman, David Haye, Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton would be major names.
Ok fair enough their mostly fighting stiffs for bum titles but they'd be well known, even if they werent as popular as Bruno, Ben, Eubank et al.

Yes, but from what I have read, the reason allegedly left ITV and took his fighters with him, is they were offering piss poor money anyhow. It appears that ITV were not that keen on pursuing boxing after the Watson and McClellan bouts, and maybe they just deliberately made allegedly an offer he couldn't help but turn down.
Sky came along with the check-books bursting, so who can blame him?

Not disputing money, just saying the game has been wrecked by skys piss poor handling of the game, lack of advertising, and subsequent PPV, and its increasing prices. Casual sports fans cant be fucked, end of.
15 million watched Benn/McClellan on terrestrial TV.
Skys biggest audience i believe was 1 million for Tyson/Bruno II.
Sums up Sky and boxing.

I thought it was a little more than that but either way I take your point.overhand_right wrote:15 million watched Benn/McClellan on terrestrial TV.
Plus that fight was on at 9pm on a Saturday night when most of the target audience was out on the razzle etc.
Can you imagine the figures if it had been on a Sunday evening or afternoon?
