Won his first 33 fights
Was 43-1 before facing the great Roberto Duran of Panama
After lusing to Duran, he won 10 consecutive fights
Only had 3 losses before turning 30
Stopped once in 69 bouts, which means he had a tremendous chin. The KO loss by Duran was not a real knockout.
AP Fighter of the Year in 1970.

Defining fight: W15 Ismael Laguna.....September 26, 1970......"Won Lightweight crown in a scorching heat against fellow hall of famer"

Yes, at the time, he was pound per pound better than Nino Benvenutti, Howard Winstone, Johnny Famechon, Alan Rudkin, Walter McGowan, Bruno Arcari, Carmelo Bossi, and Joe Bugner.
