sven ottke was a unified champ and rated top 3 smw for a while, that's well better than your average euro level ebu titilist or soft mandatory challenger (eg morrade hakkar, gary lockett). it's become a myth that he got a gift every fight, from ppl who dont seem to know any more of his career than the clip of the ref from the reid fight

He was a guy who's title reign I always wanted to go back and revisit. I read a lot of Fight reports in The Ring when he was active, but I don't think I ever watched him fight.

I always wanted to take the time to kinda assess his style, and determine how good I feel he actually was.

It also kinda makes you wonder if they do the same thing with the our big names in Germany or something. Like say Canelo gets a robbery or 2 in his favor, and as far as they're concerned, he's just an overhyped Gift Machine.

Boxing Fans do tend to be Tribal like that.

Fury is a funny one. I actually made a prediction many years ago that Fury would be the guy to dethrone Wladimir Klit. This was when Fury was still fighting Euro level guys and was most famous for uppercutting himself. I claimed with his size and movement he would beat Wlad.

The boxing board I was on at the time laughed me right out of the conversation.

Carl Froch was a big surprise though. I agree with others above that he never passed the eye test. But he had many other entangibles that the eye just didn't pick up on. Toughness, grit and his desire to win made him dangerous every time out.

BJ Saunders I thought was the next Sven Ottke. I thought he was seriously that bad. I didn't believe BJ would ever get beyond Euro level and be protected his entire career.

He was like watching paint dry, terrible amateurish style. He was most definitely protected throughout his reign. The referees would literally break up the action any time he got in any sort of trouble throughout his entire career. Despite him being a world Champion he really never fought outside of Euro level fighters and was always fighting on his foreign soil. I followed his career and even go back from time to time to watch his fights and all the home cooking involved in his farce of a career.

That's not to say he wasn't a decent fighter. He had a decorated amateur career. He knew his way around the ring, he could box a bit, but he wasn't fighting alot of world level guys and was exposed several times and bailed out on every occasion.

he beat glen johnson, charles brewer, byron mitchell, thomas tate......all were top 10ish guys at the time. mitchell was the wba champ and probably top 5. ppl turn every close fight he had into robbery.....

ottke was unified champ and was generally ranked in the top 3 at one point, i guess it's not a bad thing to 'only' achieve that much

Glen Johnson was the Fighter of the Year in 2004.

It's cool actually that Glen turned his career around so dramatically the way he did. Got quite a solid run out of the momentum he built in 2004.

I thought he was the future of the HW division and was the heir apparent once Lewis and Tyson retired and Holyfield regressed info a journeyman.
