He also beat Armstrong who held that jinxed title. I saw that live I think. Same as the calvo win (years before he fought Hamed). The crowd was weird. They kept shouting insults but they thought he was French. Someone then asks where he’s from so I said Spain. Then they asked for a Spanish thing. Paella was the first thing that popped into my head so they were they shouting that at him. God knows what he thought of it all.

On a related note I saw his fight with Harry escott ringside so j could hear all the seconds cos it was a small hall. Bizarrely his young son was shouting out advice and calling him harry. The advice was weird. SOFT AND HARD HARRY. UP AND UNDER HARRY. Round after round.

If we`re mentioning Curtis woodhouse surely we`ve got to mention Darren Hamilton as a poor British champion

Matthew Barney for me, I was always battered as an amateur so always reticent to say someone else was poor.

For me it is about styles. Matthew was jab jab hug to victory. I can’t remember him being robbed for the euro, but never followed him closely. I think Oakley was better because he came to fight not spoil. Only my opinion.

Ashley theophane. Not a bad fighter by any measure but he really looked down on the domestic titles then lost to Hamilton.

I know it's not a domestic fight, but he held his own with a peak Broner, until he didn't. But that was a decent world second tier performance.

In honesty, Theophane made a few quid and he went on that run fighting all over the world and he won some fringe belts. He's probably got some tales to tell and had a good time.

Considering Woodhouse came into boxing late, I thought he did quite well

Winning a British title is a great achievement and while some of them may have over-achieved relative to their talent, it's surely hard to think anything other than 'good on you' given the sacrifices they will have made.

I agree, the tone of this thread is very disappointing and disrespectful, these forums used to be better with more insight and knowledge.

I tend to like domestic title matches. There is something a bit special about them. Moore and Rhodes was one of my favourite fights. John Odonnell vs Craig Watson was great too.

No matter how good you are not many boxers can put on their CV that they were British champs so respect to each and every one of them who won a British title

Basically the British title has been devalued by the myriad world titles on offer, and as a result, a British champ can now be essentially "area" level. Wherehas when the World stage wasn't so diluted, a British champion was " the best fighter in Britain".

I agree, Coco - I've seen plenty of Area title fights (and many very good ones), but the British title is a discernibly higher level in almost all cases. And agreed that it does not mean you are the best in Britain - look at the British world champions who chose not to fight for the British title for one reason or another. Bruno and Hamed immediately come to mind, but no doubt there are others. (As an aside, I liked the fact that Lennox Lewis got the British, Commonwealth and European collection - did it the proper way.)

Plus the point that all British champions deserve respect for their achievement is a good one.

All of the guys mentioned achieved one of their dreams and we all respect them for it. It's a boxing forum, we will discuss things like this. Its fair game. Th respect is still there. I mentioned mcphilbin but make no mistake, I'm totally aware that he would give me a proper hiding any day of the week, as would any of the other boxers mentioned.

In the early 00's Jamie mckeever won the featherweight title in a local Derby bout with Tony mulholland then he lost it to Roy Rutherford then Rutherford lost it to dazzo williams and dazzo defended it a few times against mckeever then Rutherford then John simpson before losing it to nicky cook. mckeever was an exciting little fighter but Rutherford was quite boring to watch.

Mike Holden? The only name he ever beat was Julius Francis, who was still sore from the Tyson shellacking, and that narrow win is sandwiched by losses to Jules.

Can't think of any British heavyweight champ Holden could beat. Scott Gammer would probably outbox him!
