VADA has a confidentiality clause in their agreements, so if there is an adverse finding, they can't just tell the whole world about it. They report it to the people who are directly connected to the fight and no one else. When the results make their way to the two fighters and their teams, the big fight contracts have clauses in that deal specifically with this eventuality. Legally the promoters can't say too much about it and that's what we saw last week and continue to see. Rival promoters and other fighters can say pretty much what they want, because they aren't bound by anything.

I'm not defending anyone, but It's a lot more involved than the casuals realize.

I seem to remember reading that a former British and European bantamweight champion in the late 90s was fined a couple grand because caffeine was found in his piss in a post fight check. I think the board took a view that as caffeine is a diuretic it could be used to help shift weight. Does anyone know if this is still the case?

Oliver McCall refused to take a drug test after the Bruno fight and a mate who was part of the medical team at the fight said it was common knowledge that McCall was doing coke in the dressing room before the fight.

Caffeine was previously on the WADA banned list; it was removed in 2004. There was a specific concentration allowed in urine, and anything over constituted a failure. It was equivalent of around 500mg caffeine. However, that could vary depending on timing.

After 2004, caffeine was added to the monitoring programme. This means it wasn’t banned, at any dosage, but its use was monitored.

Also you could have drunk as much coffee as you wanted without problems, the fella who got caught was taking the concentrated caffeine tablets
