I have no doubt balls of steel Tommy Morrison would have decapped Herbie in Hong Kong, even if he had to come off the floor to do it.

I think so, in an exciting shootout. Morrison in 3 perhaps. And Mercer giving Bruno a reality check in around 8.

Yep, sounds about right

Morrison wouldn't be able to afford to take a clean shot from Herbie. Herbie gets a bit underrated these days. He had world level speed and power. His chin was area level.

Morrison took punches from Foreman, Lewis and Ruddock without getting sparked. Against Bowe Herbie was going down from glancing blows and missed punches and he got poleaxed by a Klitschko jab. Jim McDonnell later told Boxing Monthly that at the start of camp Herbie is the most confident guy in the world, but as the fight closes in the self doubt would creep in and he'd become scared.

I fully accept Herbie had freakish power and could hurt literally anybody, but he had a bad heart, a bad chin and boxed straight up with his chin in the air. Willi Fischer can't capitalise on that, or Damon Reed, or Tony Tucker's zombie, but Morrison could and would.

Morrison had a bad chin but it was nowhere near as bad as Herbie's; he compensated with a great heart, great powers of recovery, came back from peril to win by KO multiple times and he had solid technique. Morrison's aggression and power would petrify Herbie.

On the other hand the fight was scheduled around 3 months after the Morrison, Ross Purity draw. So he might only have turned up in the Michael Bentt, train 2 hours, party a lot more hours, type shape!

morrison-hide isnt a fight id want to bet on, both offensively gifted fighters with plenty of speed and power, more than enough to ko the other. both chinny and hittable, losing to guys well below their level. either guy winning by KO 1 would be no shock

tommy seems less of a head case though, managed to win in fightts he faced adversity, and never fainted from a jab, so i would favour him, but not a fight where i think you can be sure of the winner

You are correct my friend. Glebe House School for boys (as was) in Hunstanton in Norfolk. Some summers I can still be seen smashing 6's at the annual Headmasters XI v Old boys cricket match. I was at Glebe 1972-1975
Awesome. Was it a fee-paying provision? Just interested in how Hide came to go there. Such an interesting journey when a dude comes from a broad as a youth and builds a life over here. I am someone who has never travelled much so always find it particularly interesting. I am endlessly annoying our bid manager at work who is Sri Lankan and ended up living in Yorkshire, she humours me like one would humour a well meaning yappy Westie.
Herbie was adopted by a family in Norfolk, The family had money hence Herbie ending up at a Hunstanton boarding school. Herbie was 6ft3 aged 13 (ive seen him on the school pics) so despite being very limited academically he didnt get any hassle. He excelled at sport at the school because of his physique, other pubeless boys of the same age would not dare take the piss out of his stutters and mumbles. Herbies physical size protected him at the school. In those days the amount of black children in norfolk was very limited so big Herbie stood out like a sore thumb.

Herbie found a love for boxing at the school, the boxing ring is in the centre of the school gym, an old faschioned dark wooden floored gym with wall bars down one side, the same ring that i had had some fights in as a school boy. Im hanging onto that claim to fame.
thank you for that, really interesting, and appreciated.

I think it was after the fight Bowe made the quote 'You can run, but you can't Herbie'.

Just rewatched Hide vs Joe Chingangu 1 and again was revolted by the bias of the BBC announcing team. Jim Neilly, Richie Woodhall and that buffoon who used to conduct post fight interviews all immediately begin spinning a narrative that Chingangu won the fight by cheating because he hit Herbie after the ref yelled break.

Herbie threw the first punch after the ref yelled break! And was in the process of throwing another when Joe lamped him!

I remember watching this back when BBC showed some goood boxers, remember watching Haye v Thompson, Robin Reid, and early Froch iirc.

TBF to Hide he did rematch Chingangu, could easily have swerved that.

Fight 1 is here if interested

Fight 2 here

Chingangu a road warrior, fought Klitschko, Julius Francis, Pele Reid.

Bizarrely seems to have branched out into robbing car mirrors https://zambianobserver.com/police-deta ... ade-venue/

Does anyone know what Hide's chin like before the Bowe fight?

I wonder if the Bowe shellacking reduced the quality of his chin going forward?

He had plenty of heart to go with his punch.

He was knocked down once prior to it, boxrec lists it as due to him being punched after the ref said break.

Always chinny. Michael Murray wobbled him and Craig Petersen decked him but it wasn't counted. There weren't many opportunities to test his chin because he was fed a steady diet of cans.

I think that was Big Bad James Oyebola in the ABA fight clip for fight 1. He used to turn up at Hide's fights just to shout abuse at him in hope of getting a fight.

Just checked, it was Akinwande in the clip.

Big Joey Chingangu went into the brit boxing history books that night. Agree totally on the commentary and post fight interview although I have to say that post fight interview cracks me up every time

Look at Boxrec's own write up of the fight on the Wiki entry. It's as bad as the beeb. Apparently some editor was a big Herbie fan and happy to overlook him hitting on the break.

"Hide was hit on the referee's call of break and was knocked down. The referee didn't deduct any points from Chingangu and didn't give Hide any time to recover. He was still hurt and was knocked down 6 times in total, being knocked out on the 6th and final knockdown. Hide would later avenge this controversial defeat by a first round knockout."

I have a half memory of enduring Julius Francis v Chingangu on the BBC for the Commonwealth Heavyweighy title was it? Fairly painful stuff!

you've a good memory mate, it was for the vacant CW title. Boxrec agrees with your opinion on it being painful, they gave it 1 star https://boxrec.com/en/event/27463/40876

'He hit me after the ref shouted break.'

And you'd tried to lamp him twice......

Absolutely mad as a march hare that guy.
