Told it before on here but I'd lived with a then girlfriend for a few years and things weren't going well.
She suggested we had a weekend away to try and sort things out.
I agreed, and she was pleased when I told her I'd booked us a nice hotel in Manchester.
However she didn't seem as happy when we got there and I revealed I had two tickets for Hatton v Freddie Pendleton.
Great night of boxing but I was thrown out the house soon after and lost everything.
Took me a while to get going again but now married to a brilliant woman for 19 years. Always owed Ricky for that!

Awful news. He delivered so many memorable nights and was the toast of Manchester on so many occasions. RIP champ.

It's the Manchester derby today and Ricky was a huge City fan, so I hope he gets honoured before the match.

He lost his best friend earlier this year and then the friends dad died.

Some sort of social media post popped up on my phone in the week, where Ricky seemed to be doing a quick video about something. Didn’t catch what it was about as I didn’t have the sound up but Ricky didn’t look in the best of spirits.
Anyway doesn’t matter, shocking news that he has passed. Ricky exceeded a lot of expectations and will be celebrated for a long time to come.

Cheers mate. I think like all boxing fans then (sorry, dont know how old you are so forgive me if you were also one of them) were absolutely captivated with Hatton in that rising part of his career, he seemed nailed on to get to the top and was so exciting. I got him to sign my programme after he'd done a six rounder at Donny Dome in 1999 and have treasured it ever since like a proper fan boy.

very sad news. I met him after the lascano fight.
for such a brave brave fighter he was always mentally fragile and never really recovered from his losses (in and out the ring).
I hope he finds the peace he struggled with.

The Pac defeat must have been hell to deal with. I always felt Ricky could have had a much bigger say in that fight with his boxing skill, he looked very sharp and confident on the night. But he hunted the hunter and paid a horrible price.
The merciful Cotto final round stoppage aside, it would be nearly a decade before Manny scored another KO.

I'm American and I knew quite a few folk for whom Hatton was there favorite fighter.
One of England's most beloved fighters of all time. Sorry to hear he's left us all so soon.

RIP to a true throwback blue collar work hard play harder legendary boxing classic. It is sad but not shocking that Ricky has left the building prior to his 50th.
I choose to cherish the June 4, 2005 Hitman.

for whatever reason, he never seemed satisfied with his achievements..... was forever justifying his (brilliant) career.....behind the scenes he must have been extremely sensitive to criticism. It is just so so sad. The family must be so distraught. It is a horrible, stark reminder that you cant buy peace of mind.

Very sad news
A hell of a fighter
I still clearly remember seeing a 17 year old over at Barking for an amateur show. My trainers had to leave but told me to look out for a top prospect who'd travelled down from Manchester called 'Richard Hatton'.
I was no more than 3 metres from the ring when Hatton came out blazing at the 1st bell and beat his opponent (Colin Lynes) with vicious body shots in about 50 seconds.
I knew there and then he'd be very special. Certainly the most devastating amateur boxer I've seen in the flesh.
