I was a 19-year-old student in tiny Nelson, British Columbia. Two days before the Thrilla, I hitch-hiked 420 miles to Vancouver, which was the closest place to see the closed-circuit telecast. You can imagine my consternation upon arriving in the big city and finding out the venue (Pacific Coliseum) was completely sold out! But on the morning of the fight, radio station CKLG ran a contest for the best phoned-in "prediction poem" -- with the prize being a pair of floor seats and dinner for two at a fancy steak restaurant. My winning entry was as follows: "During the fight in Manila tonight, Ali will float like a cloud in heaven. Joe Frazier will cower under Muhammad's sheer power ... and go down for the count in 11."
Steak never tasted so good!
