Man, Troy is really getting screwed over. I know boxing is like the wild west with rules etc, but making him turn down a world title opportunity, then forcing him to immediately give up the title he just won, is massively hurting his earning potential and career trajectory. In any other field he would have a watertight case to show how this contract is harmful to his career.

Also, what are the likely consequences if he does just say eff it, I'm taking that world title fight? Worth the risk for an opportunity which will probably never come again?

I'm presuming he signed the contract and both him and Matchroom knew exactly what was in it.

Pure speculation on my part, but I wonder if Williamson didn't expect Simpson to immediately activate the rematch clause.

Williamson was like a man possessed last time, this is a sizeable ask for Simpson. I’m not sure he can pull it off.

He can't, and won't. Troy knows how to beat him.

Likely expected to get stiffed on hometown judging and refereeing

And when you look at the scorecards and one of the ringside judge reactions, you can see why

Rematch clause wouldn't have been activated had Troy lost like he was supposed to

TROY WILLIAMSON VACATES EUROPEAN TITLE, NAVARRO-BANK COULD FILL VACANCY

Troy Williamson vacated his European super middleweight title on Monday.

The 34-year-old from Darlington, England, ripped the British, Commonwealth and European titles from Callum Simpson in a big upset on December 20.

He hoped to parlay his impressive come from behind stoppage into something bigger.

However, any aspirations Williamson (22-4-1, 16 KOs) had of facing Osleys Iglesias for the vacant IBF title were dashed because he is contractually bound to facing Simpson (18-1, 13 KOs) after Boxxer invoked a rematch, which is tentatively scheduled for May.

The EBU forbid direct rematches and so Williamson-Simpson 2 will move on with the British and Commonwealth titles on the line.

Williamson is already back in training and has recently been in Denmark, where he has been sparring with Jacob Bank, who faces former IBF 168-pound champ William Scull on Saturday.

The EBU acted quickly and have matched official challenger Jose Luis Navarro (17-2, 12 KOs) and No. 6 Pierre Hubert Di Bombe (24-2-1, 13 KOs) to fill the vacancy.

However, the No. 5 rated Jacob Bank (17-0, 9 KOs) has asked to be considered for the opportunity to face Navarro.

If Bank is victorious against Scull, he will face Navarro. In the event he loses, Di Bombe will step in.

So, if Bank defeats Scull this Saturday, he will be in line to fight Navarro for the EBU title. Simple and straight forward. However, if Bank loses, Dibombe steps in to face Navarro. Makes sense ... sort of. But what happens if Dibombe loses to Doberstein in their February 21 fight? Will Doberstein, or maybe Scull, get the shot at Navarro?

I don't think he can safely make 168.

I can imagine they are gutted, thinking this was a ticking over bout before getting a title shot from the aftermath of Crawfords retirement then BOOM, they get Troy'd.

And now he wants revenge rather than taking the sensible route 7 pounds north.

He should have a fight at 175 then call out Lyndon Arthur in a Battle of the Pennines.

p.s. I'm not actually sure if the Pennines is in between Barnsley & Manchester.

Perhaps Simpson is reluctant to take another one sided
beating!!!

you are not going to pull a “sicky” are you Callum?

In my opinion Team Simpson are showing a complete lack of respect.
Why on earth are you so emotionally invested in whether Callum Simpson signs for the rematch or not?

Troy doesn't even want to be wasting his time fighting this pointless rematch when he could have had a world title shot.

Wouldn't surprise me if Simpson wants out of Boxxer and Boxxer is just trying to hand him another L on the way out.

Plus where is it even going to air? Final fight of the 4-event BBC deal coming up. Can't imagine BBC will renew or extend. DAZN also not going to give Boxxer a deal.

Youtube ppv? Twitch? Discord?

This is so wrong …

is there a date for the date for the rematch?

is Simpson reluctant to fight?

will team Simpson show the champion some respect…

is the fight being delayed for promoters convenience?

It’s one thing activating a rematch, but unless the rematch terms were already agreed prior to the first fight, then that’s what they will be doing.

Negotiating.

Terms for a rematch would already be agreed in the clause surely?

Who knows. Maybe they didn’t think they’d need a rematch.

Then there wouldn’t be a clause to activate!

I’ve seen a few rematch clauses in my time - always had the terms specified.

troy already had top

This also makes no sense to me. Because Simpson's team activated the rematch clause, Williamson was essentially forced to give up a world title shot as well as vacate the EBU belt he had just won. So, now he's fighting Zachenhuber, who's a decent boxer and should make for a good bout, but it's not the same as going after a world title or defending his European title.

Simpson done him and bottled it. Excercised the rematch clause forcing Troy to turn down world title shot. Then he pulled out. Shocking behavior. Glad Troy iced him.
