Naoya Inoue vs. Jesse Rodriguez Gets Mizuho PayPay Dome Plan For Riyadh Season’s Japan Debut

Inoue vs. Bam Rodriguez now has a reported Fukuoka dome plan as Riyadh Season eyes a Japan boxing record.

Naoya Inoue vs. Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez suddenly has a dome-sized outline, and this is where boxing starts acting like it found a cheat code. After Inoue already turned the Tokyo Dome into a monster-stage boxing flex, a fresh Japanese report says planners are looking at Mizuho PayPay Dome Fukuoka in February 2027, with the Tokyo Dome still sitting there as the March monster option.

The moving pieces are exactly why this thing feels less like fantasy matchmaking and more like boxing business with a big checkbook behind it. The plan, as reported in Japan, is for Riyadh Season’s first event in the country to go bigger than the earlier IG Arena idea in Nagoya. The Fukuoka dome is home to the SoftBank Hawks, has a retractable roof, and normally sits in the 40,000-plus range before promoters start turning the field into a fight-night cash machine.

Dome Money Changes The Bam Rodriguez Clock

The wrinkle is Rodriguez. Bam is reportedly preparing for one more bantamweight unification in October or November before jumping into the Inoue chaos at super bantamweight. That sounds sensible on paper. It also sounds like the kind of sensible plan that gets shoved into a locker once Riyadh Season starts talking about Japan’s biggest boxing night ever.

Inoue is not exactly waiting around with his hands in his pockets either. The Japanese superstar has made it clear that February works, but he is not going to let the chase drag forever. If the Rodriguez fight slides too far, Inoue has the featherweight road sitting right there, with a fifth-division title chase dangling like bait.

That is what makes the venue detail matter. A tentatively held dome is not a signed contract, and boxing fans know better than to celebrate paperwork that does not exist yet. Still, the shape of the thing is getting harder to ignore. Inoue is coming off another stadium-level flex after the Junto Nakatani event, while Rodriguez has become the little-weight menace everyone keeps daring to move up.

The money is just as loud. Reports have Rodriguez’s side looking at a career-best payday around the one-billion-yen neighborhood, while Inoue’s side would be living in full A-side luxury. That is the kind of number that makes even cautious teams stop, breathe, and ask if the risk is actually the point.

For Bam, the gamble is nasty but glorious. He can stay at bantamweight, collect more belts, and keep building the machine. Or he can walk into Inoue’s division, in Inoue’s country, under the brightest lights available, and try to flip the whole pound-for-pound table like a bar fight gone cinematic.

For Inoue, this is legacy business with teeth. He has already shown he can pack a massive building, and he has already proven his danger survives bad moments, including when he climbed off the canvas against Ramon Cardenas. Rodriguez would bring a different kind of headache, younger, sharp, and mean enough to make the matchup feel like a real threat instead of another coronation.

Nothing is official until contracts are signed, dates are locked, and both camps stop playing public chess. But if the Fukuoka dome really is being lined up for February, this is no longer just boxing fans screaming into the timeline. It is the sport trying to build a super fight so big that even the rumor mill has to throw combinations to keep up.

Inoue’s recent run already made him one of boxing’s nastiest measuring sticks, from Tokyo Dome talk to the title form he showed when he handled TJ Doheny. Now Rodriguez may be staring at the most dangerous invitation in boxing. Say yes, and the whole sport watches. Say no or wait too long, and Inoue might just take his power to featherweight and leave everybody arguing over what could have been.

Report: Naoya Inoue vs. 'Bam' Rodriguez venue 'booked' for February

It is being reported in Japan that the mouth-watering clash between Naoya Inoue and Jesse Rodriguez could take place in February or March, with two stadiums in play to host.

According to Japanese outlet Ronspo, the contest would take place at either the Mizuho PayPay Dome Fukuoka in February or, if the following month was preferred, the Tokyo Dome. The Mizuho PayPay Dome has a retractable roof and has, states the report, been “tentatively booked”.

The event, should it occur, would see Riyadh Season spread its wings to Japan for the first time with Turki Alalshikh keen to make it “the biggest event in Japan’s history,” according to Ronspo.

It is understood that much of what happens next comes down to “Bam” Rodriguez who, most recently, in his featherweight debut in June, picked up the WBA title when beating Antonio Vargas in six rounds.

The 33-year-old Inoue, meanwhile, continues to rule in the division above and would represent a step-up – in both size and class – for the American. Rodriguez, 24-0 (17 KOs), had previously indicated that he would prefer one more fight at bantamweight, in October or November, before rising in weight again.

Last month, the 33-0 (27 KOs) Inoue indicated he would not wait too long for Rodriguez to make his decision.

“If it can be done around February, I’ll do it,” he said.

But he refused to be “fixated on Bam. If he wants to stay at bantamweight a little longer, I’m thinking about challenging for featherweight [title]. If it gets postponed, I’ll go my own way.”

The Mizuho PayPay Dome Fukuoka is a state-of-the-art stadium that is home to baseball team SoftBank Hawks and boasts a capacity of 40,000. However, it is estimated that 55,000 fans could attend if it was just a boxing ring, and not an entire baseball field, that was the center of attention. The Tokyo Dome – where Inoue beat Junto Nakatani in May – can also home 55,000.

According to the report, the 17,000-seater IG Arena in Nagoya was rejected as a potential venue by Riyadh Season, who have made a bid to stage the showdown.

Cardenas: Inoue won’t allow Bam Rodriguez to exploit weaknesses

If Naoya Inoue eventually shares the ring with Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez, the perceived holes in his game won’t be there anymore.

The Ring’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter is hoping to land a mega fight against Rodriguez in the first quarter of 2027. If that fight does take place, Robert Garcia, Rodriguez’s trainer, wants to exploit some of the weaknesses Inoue has shown in past fights.

Against Ramon Cardenas and Luis Nery, the Japanese star was dropped by a pair of overhand lefts. Although Inoue (33-0, 27 KOs) managed to shake off those hard shots and win those fights by stoppage, Garcia’s seen enough shaky moments from the undisputed junior featherweight champion.

However, Cardenas (27-2, 15 KOs) believes that the four-division champion won’t allow Garcia and Rodriguez to take advantage of those mental and physical lapses.

“I think he learned from his mistakes,” Cardenas told The Ring. “With fighters like that, he’ll mess up one time. He messed up with me, messed up with Nery, but he’s not gonna mess up the second time. When I fought him, I knew that he put his hands down, but after that first punch I didn’t catch him anymore. I kept looking for it but it wasn’t there. It’s gonna be hard to catch that stuff. Inoue already knows that they’re looking at.”

After Rodriguez stopped Antonio Vargas in six lopsided rounds on June 13 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, to win the WBA bantamweight title, Garcia stated that the No. 4 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list may attempt to grab another 118-pound title before moving up in weight.

Cardenas, like many, is hoping to see them fight in the near future, but he also has his own career to worry about.

Since losing to Inoue via eighth-round stoppage in May, 2025, the 30-year-old bounced back nicely, grabbing his own stoppage win over Erik Robles in December. He’ll look to make it two in a row this weekend, when he takes on Leonardo Carrillo on Saturday night at USC Galen Center in Los Angeles on the undercard of Lester Martinez vs. Luka Plantic.

From Cardenas’ point of view, as long as he racks up the victories, there’s a chance that he could eventually be standing across the ring from Inoue once again.

“I just gotta keep winning,” he said. “Maybe I can fight for an interim title. On a personal level, I like the interim titles. A lot of people don’t like them, but I like them because it gives you a chance to be a world champion. I’m trying to snatch the interim title, then see what Inoue is going to do or me and Inoue can do it again. I’d be willing to do that.”

I don't blame Inoue if he moves up.

He is p4p #1 & a super star in Japan, he doesn't need to be wasting his career waiting on Bam's Team.

Matchroom announcing a Bam fight for December, forces Inoue to move on - smh. They can't expect the p4p#1 to put his career on hold if they are playing games like that.

Inoue fought 4 times last year. Had a massive fight in May. Then, negotiations have wasted the rest of his year...

He should move up, Bam doesn't really want it

It's not a particularly big fight anyway. Bigger than anything he's got waiting for him at Featherweight probably but just barely and the achievement of winning a title at Featherweight would ultimately be about as significant as beating the highly rated Bam.

I mean bam is a early prime p4p type guy around the same weight... if inoue is going to fight him it's better sooner rather than later. It's hard for me to imagine this wouldn't be a comercial success although bams reported purses have been weak.

It's got huge legacy upside if inoue wins and bam goes on to be great.

BAM 122, espinoza 126, Loma at 130, pac 140... these are probably his best options. And of those that's the order I'd like to seem them from left (p4p duel) to right (past prime spectical)

Inoue doesn't need to wait around for Bam though. Inoue is already miles and miles and miles ahead of Bam's legacy. It should be Bam eager to fight Inoue, not Bam playing games and not signing to fight him.

Inoue doesn't need Bam to be a star. Bam needs Inoue to be one. Inoue is a Legend of the Sport already with or without Bam. Bam may not ever become one without overcoming someone like Inoue.

While inoue is miles ahead of bam legacy wise, my point is bams his best legacy fight, and sooner is better than later as bam is likely still I proving and inoue is likely declining.... so while inoue is clearly Aside, due to the career stage, it makes sense bam is in less of a hurry... (sucks but makes sense if he thinks it will happen. Eventualy).

Right, but if Bam is trying to wait until Inoue has aged to the point of him having a major advantage, then Inoue should simply not give him that chance. He had the opportunity to fight him now. He chose not to. F*ck him. Inoue has plenty of options.

Bam can now be as popular as your average Bantamweight Champion typically is since he missed his megafight of his own volition.

Inoue ready to move on from Bam fight, prepare for featherweight

Naoya Inoue's patience with Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez is wearing thin.

“I’m not gonna sit around waiting for Bam,” Inoue wrote on his X account. “So I’m starting prep for featherweight, too.”

Inoue, The Ring and undisputed junior featherweight champion, and Rodriguez, the WBA bantamweight titlist have been on a collision course to fight and talks for a clash between the two pound-for-pound talents in early 2027 have already taken place.

However, Rodriguez (24-0, 17 KOs) is reportedly on the verge of signing a deal to unify his title with WBO 118-pound champion Christian Medina, likely in December.

Inoue, The Ring’s No. 1-ranked pound-for-pound fighter, was very active in 2025, fighting four times, but will have fought just one time this year once it's over, having secured the biggest victory of his career against compatriot Junto Nakatani in May at Tokyo Dome in Japan.

Rodriguez, The Ring’s No. 4-ranked pound-for-pounder, grabbed a dominant sixth-round stoppage win over Antonio Vargas at Desert Diamond Arena in Phoenix, Arizona, on June 13.

Although Inoue (33-0, 27 KOs) says his patience is being tested, Rodriguez's promoter Eddie Hearn believes there should be no change to the plan, and that a fight between the pair can still happen.

“Who’s waiting?” Hearn wrote on his Instagram account. “You said you are fighting in February/March? We are ready.”
In July, Hearn told The Ring: "DAZN has asked us to start negotiations for that fight. They're very interested in that fight worldwide, particularly in Japan. But it depends when that takes place.

"Bam is going to fight in November or December. He'll most likely unify again. [WBO bantamweight champion Christian] 'Chispa' Medina is a good option. I think that's a great fight.

"We haven't heard anything about the Inoue fight. Everyone keeps talking about that fight. We've publicly stated we're interested in that fight. We want that fight, but we haven't really heard anything."

Naoya Inoue hasn't informed 'Bam' Rodriguez team of revised schedule

There’s no reason for Naoya Inoue to panic and start making plans without Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez when an early spring super-fight is still there for the taking, Rodriguez trainer Robert Garcia told Boxing Scene Tuesday.

Hours after Japan’s unbeaten four-division and undisputed junior-featherweight champion Inoue, 33-0 (27 KOs), posted on “X,” “I have no intention of sitting around and waiting for ‘Bam,’ so I’m going to start getting ready to move up to featherweight,” Garcia was befuddled.

“There has been no communication from Inoue to [Rodriguez promoter] Eddie Hearn. If there was, I’m sure I would’ve heard about it right away,” Garcia said. “Inoue can do what he wants… We don’t need Inoue. But we are right on schedule to fight him in March, April or May.”

San Antonio’s WBA 118lbs champion Rodriguez, 24-0 (17 KOs), is now in Garcia’s boxing academy in Moreno Valley, California, beginning camp for an expected bantamweight unification against Mexico’s WBO champion Christian Medina that could land on the December 11 Anthony Joshua-Tyson Fury card in Cardiff, Wales.

The long-communicated plan for three-division champion Rodriguez, 26, was to take one more stringent bantamweight bout after debuting in the division with a June knockout of then-WBA champion Antonio Vargas, and then move to an Inoue fight in Japan in early 2027.

The strategy made sense given that Inoue, 33, has gone the distance in three consecutive 122lbs defenses, and has been knocked down in two of his past seven title fights in the division.

At featherweight, 6-feet-1 Rafael Espinoza, two-division champion Brandon Figueroa, Angelo Leo and unbeaten Bruce “ShuShu” Carrington reign.

“I don’t know why [Inoue] is panicking,” Garcia said. “‘Bam’ is waiting to finalize this [late 2026] fight and then we’ll go to Japan for this big fight … if it takes until April or May, the weather will be nicer.”

Garcia said if Inoue wants to propose an alternate plan, he, Rodriguez and Hearn are willing to listen.

“But as of now, no one has told us anything,” Garcia said.

Sounds like Bam is putting money ahead of opportunity here. Inoue is the big fight and he's greedily trying to get one in between which will push it back. Inoue doesn't need to wait. Bam needs Inoue, Inoue doesn't need Bam. Turki is the only one who's going to pay Bam half decent money.

And Hearn just says the same shit.

He was pushing MJ and calling Inoue a duck for a year..

This is nothing more than the typical "let it marinate" strategy.
Drag it along for years while constantly talking about it and always finding new ways to delay it.
It's a big fight right now but it's not going to happen any time soon.
They are going to hype it for years trying to make it a bigger fight.

Bam Rodriguez pushes back on Inoue, calls for March matchup

Naoya Inoue surprised the boxing world earlier this week when he declared that he's ready to move on from a superfight against Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez.

“I’m not gonna sit around waiting for Bam,” Inoue wrote on his X account on Tuesday. “So I’m starting prep for featherweight, too.”

Inoue (33-0, 27 KOs) is the undisputed champion at 122 pounds and The Ring's No. 1 pound-for-pound ranked fighter. "The Monster" last fought in May and beat Japanese countryman and P4P cohort Junto Nakatani by unanimous decision. Inoue declared soon after that he planned to take the rest of the year off, but the timeline of his break doesn't appear to be aligning with Rodriguez's plans.

Rodriguez (24-0, 17 KOs) made his 118-pound debut in June by stopping Antonio Vargas for the WBA title. Immediately after the fight, Rodriguez and career-long coach and manager Robert Garcia made it known that they planned to take another fight at bantamweight before the end of the year against WBO beltholder Christian Medina.

Meanwhile, massive momentum began to build around an Inoue-Rodriguez fight with DAZN greenlighting negotiations, and Netflix being interested in staging the fight as well. Turki Alalshikh suggested a January date in Japan.

"We're not saying that we are not taking the fight. We are ready to fight Inoue, and we are serious about it," Garcia told The Ring. "We have no problem taking the fight. Bam is ready. I've talked to Bam, and he's ready to do it in March. I previously said April or May, but we can be ready for March.

"I don't know why Inoue is publicly saying that he's not going to wait for Bam when not one single person has approached us for negotiating anything — nothing, zero. Eddie Hearn hasn't heard anything either because I talked to Eddie and he told me that he hasn't heard anything."

Hearn, Matchroom Boxing's chairman and Rodriguez's promoter, chimed in on the matter as well on social media Tuesday in response to Inoue.

“Who’s waiting?” Hearn wrote. “You said you are fighting in February/March? We are ready.”

Garcia also added that Hearn is trying to land the Rodriguez-Medina fight on the undercard of the Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua card on December 11, or on December 19.

"Bam needs to fight before the end of the year, contractually. Bam has been in camp for the last three weeks. We're waiting on the date for Medina. Bam can take the holidays off and be back in camp to fight Inoue by March," Garcia said.

"If Inoue and his team are really willing to do it, all we need is a phone call and we'll work it out. I think Inoue is just playing it smart. I don't think he's backing out of the fight. All he needs to do is tell his management team and promoter to get a hold of us, and we'll make a deal. That's not a problem. We will make a deal for March."

Saying that they want it to be in May next year is crazy considering this has been in the works since May/June. Bam is only going up 2 kilos from his last fight. He has no excuses except wanting to make some money before he loses his undefeated selling point.

Hopefully Inoue makes another title defense in December or so. Don't they usually plan a big New Years Eve Boxing event in Japan every year? Or is it New Years Day? Something like that.

Naoya Inoue urges Jesse Rodriguez to skip tune-up and fight him next

Naoya Inoue has told reporters in Japan that Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez should go straight into an undisputed junior featherweight showdown with him instead of having one more contest at 118lbs.

This follows Rodriguez’s trainer and manager, Robert Garcia, pushing for his fighter to have one more contest at bantamweight before moving up to take on “The Monster” in a superfight next year. Rodriguez, the WBA titleholder at 118lbs, was in talks to face WBO beltholder Christian Medina on the originally scheduled date for Tyson Fury-Anthony Joshua on November 20 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

That would have left plenty of time for Rodriguez to recover before taking on Inoue in the first quarter of 2027. However, the event has since been pushed back to December 11 in Cardiff, Wales, and Rodriguez is reportedly in talks to face Medina on the undercard.

Inoue has made no secret of his desire to move up to 126lbs and is growing tired of waiting for a contest with Rodriguez. Inoue expressed his frustration on social media, posting: “I have no intention of sitting around waiting for Bam, so I'm going to start getting ready to move up to featherweight.”

Rodriguez’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, responded to the post, stating that his fighter would be ready for a fight in February or March. Garcia seemed more keen on Inoue and Rodriguez meeting in April or May, but Inoue’s promoter, Hideyuki Ohashi, quickly ruled that out, stating that plans are underway for a date in March.

Inoue, who was appearing at an exhibition in Tokyo, Japan, to celebrate his memorable battle with countryman Junto Nakatani back in May, spoke to reporters about his next contest.

"It will likely be around March of next year,” Inoue said through a translator. “While an opponent hasn't been finalized, we are considering various names that have been rumored, as well as the possibility of moving up to the featherweight division."

Inoue also did not seem keen on Rodriguez fighting Medina so close to a potential undisputed clash between the pair.

"It wouldn't be realistic to fight in December and then again in March; if it’s going to happen, it has to be a direct matchup,” he said.

Inoue appears to be preparing for a move to 126lbs and an attempt to become an undisputed champion in a third division.

"I will definitely challenge the featherweight division at some point; I intend to make it my primary battleground for the latter half of my career,” Inoue said.

“I want to take on this challenge together with all of you, and I would be delighted if you could witness me becoming a featherweight champion. Let’s keep moving forward together!"

Inoue, Bam work to finalize deal for Tokyo showdown

Naoya Inoue's agent is working to finalize a deal that would see his client clash with Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez in 2027.

"I'm working with Matchroom to make it happen," John Lewis told The Ring. "Both fighters want it."

Inoue (33-0, 27 KOs), The Ring's No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, would defend his undisputed 122-pound titles against pound-for-pound No. 4 Rodriguez sometime in Tokyo in March.

Rodriguez (24-0, 17 KOs), a three-weight world champion, currently campaigns at 118 pounds but is ready to make another jump up in weight for a superfight with Japanese star Inoue.

Inoue, a four-weight world champ, hasn't been in action since beating Junto Nakatani in the biggest fight in Japanese history on May 2 at Tokyo Dome. Rodriguez stopped Antonio Vargas in six rounds, winning the WBA bantamweight title in his first fight at the weight, in June.
