The referee was Tony Perez. I thought Ali accused Perez of having money on Joe? I can't recall any racist acusations.Jaclem wrote:....and, as was keeping with his attitude in those days, ali accused the referee of racism. was the ref cortez? don't recall.
Apparently Ali appologised to Perez a few years later.
...yeah...ali did, at least once, accuse perez of racism. when it was pointed out that frazier was also an african american, ali did his usual "white man's
n*****" slur.
if he thought cortez was against him for any reason, it's puzzling how he could explain his getting away with all that holding frazier by the back of the neck.

...not that it means anthing, but I've always wondered if Perez let him get away with more because he cost him a chance at an early KO...everybody knew Frazier was vulernable early...and in every Ali-Frazier fight, Ali tried to get to Joe early...in this fight, he actually had a chance..until Perez did his inexplicable 'break 'em up' thing in the 2nd round...just a fleeting thought...Jaclem wrote:...yeah...ali did, at least once, accuse perez of racism. when it was pointed out that frazier was also an african american, ali did his usual "white man's

The 1987 match between Tyson and Bonecrusher Smith was one of the most disappointing I've ever seen. I really believed Smith with his seize and strength had a chance at the upset if he would have taken the fight to Tyson from the opening bell. Instead he played octopus until about the last 15 seconds of the fight when he nailed Iron Mike with a right hand to the jaw that buckled his legs momentarily, making those who endured this 12 round sleeper wonder what the outcome might have been like if Smith had given it his all from the opening round.
Tyson vs. Bonecrusher was mentioned earlier in the thread, but this is still a good call. I remember looking especially forward to this fight because of the potential I thought Smith had to land something big early on and perhaps test Tyson's resolve (which we know a lot more about now). Not a chance. The referee got more of a workout than either of the fighters.Seamus wrote:The 1987 match between Tyson and Bonecrusher Smith was one of the most disappointing I've ever seen. Bruce Seldon should hang his head in shame, everytime that is shown!MightyWarrior wrote:Tyson/Seldon was boring, just because it was sooooo predictable. Even if it only lasted a few seconds, the bored feeling lasted for hours before and after......
Surely the WORST heavyweight "title fight" of all time?
He is a joke!
