We'll never know how good Tony Ayala would have been if he had a long, continuous career, but he was such a poised and skilled fighter as youngster for someone who had only a few professional bouts under his belt.

im very suprised in this thread at how many people seem to think davey moore would have beaten ayala!
Davey was a youngster himself and although he was thumbed in the first round against a dirty duran, I still think duran and ayala would have legitimately beaten him for all his bravery and talent.
Ayala was a piece of shit and he belongs in prison. Yes he was good but beating Duran in 83 altho a HOF accomplishement he still would have been kayoed by hearns and mccallum and julian jackson in what was a incredible era for 154 pounders.

I never heard of him KOing Moore during sparring. Can you post your source for that?
Epps had just lost to Teddy Mann immediately prior to meeting Ayala. Losing to Mann shows you how 'good' Epps was.
For KO Atrist:
You conveniently forgot to mention Herrera had also been KO'd in 2 by the unknown Jose Santana (9-8-0 record at the time) in between meeting Hope and Ayala.
Please preface your fluff with "In my opinion...".

It is such a shame that a tremendously gutsy fighter (as Teddy Mann was) is spoken of as he just was. Some guys have that natural ability and others have to toil as laboriously as did Teddy Mann did to reach the heights and to then be cast aside as he was is such a shame. The "Irish" Mann deserved as much as Epps!
"Cast aside"? That's a bit dramatic isn't it stevo?
Take off the rose colored glasses and have a good look at Mann's records. If guys like Hagler and Leonard are 1st class, I'd say Mann was probably 3rd class as he lost to most 2nd class fighters he met. My point was that if Epps was as good as dear old Overhand_Right would like us to believe, he wouldn't be losing to 3rd raters like Mann. This is not to disrespect Mann; he may well have been a gutsy fighter who worked hard for the success he achieved. I don't recall saying he wasn't. But if you think he, or Robbie Epps for that matter, were fighters of the first rank then it is you, my friend, who should be chastised.
Many of Irish Teddy Mann's losses should of went the other way....

Regardless of your opinions of the level of his talents or how high his star might have risen consider this:
Adding the name of
Tony Ayala .........to this list of round robin fights.
Marvin Hagler
Sugar Ray Leonard
Roberto Duran
Thomas Hearns

Atlas would still have kicked the fat balding buums arrse as Tony wept like a chihuahau as he had no cojones and quit against Campas for no reason and cried liked a pusssy in the corner. The dirty dog reverted back to stalking and attempting to rape girls shortly afterwards. A sick sick man.

Ayala is 0-4 with Duran being the only fight he is competitive in.

His best win was his last fight against Carlos Herrera who had not long before gone the full 15 with Maurice Hope.

P.S. I loved the way he tried to intimidate Teddy Atlas on tv and Atlas didn't back off one inch.
Please elaborate on this one more-- what fight was this & where did the incident come from?
Atlas as usual playing the tough guy despite having only a handful of junior novice amateur fights to his name.
Intimidation is more to do with psychology than the amount of fights you have had. Atlas would be stronger than Ayala mentally.

Yep I agree, I wasn't being altogether serious with that remark. I like Teddy!

This thread is very similar to the discussion over Ike Ibeabuchi.
This vid of the fight with Maldonado includes a short profile of Ayala at the start. Incidentally it also looks like he spits on Jose Luis Baltazar when he knocks him down.

Incidentally, Tony Ayala is to be released from the McCrea Correctional Facility, McCrea, GA on 13th November 2010.
Talk is of yet another comeback with a couple of warm ups then Hector Camacho jr or snr next spring/summer at 165lbs.

I hope he comes back. I'd love to see him take another beating like he did in the Campas fight.

Tony Ayala showed alot of potential, but he never fought a topclass opponent, let alone beat one. Plenty of fighters in the history of the sport have shown tremendous promise, only to fall far short of there lofty expectations.
he showed more than potential. Most importantly Tony had the power to end a fight quickly.
level of opposition proves little. Terry Norris proved that in his masterful domination of Leonard. Speed, not of opposition or experience was the deciding factor.
With Tony, he would quickly power his way to victory by bludgeoning the opponent like a piece of meat. Not that Ray would have even taken this fight but if by some chance he did, Tony would punch holes in that big head of his. Duran would stand even less chance at this weight; being less able to manuver side to side. His mobility was a real question mark.
And Hearns with that chin would not stand long before Mexican bull. Only Marvin had the tools, the chin to overcome and be victorious as he always was.
I am old enough to remember Torito. He was very talented and had the Duvas behind him. He was a shooting star; he had a very harsh upbringing and was on the verge of a title shot. He was enticed and seduced by the fast life and he did very serious harm to defenceless people. Roberto Duran would have hammered him, up and down; Ray Leonard was no fairy and would've beat him down; Tommy Hearns; well; it would've been a real shootout but my money'd been on Hearns; Mike McCallum - no contest; Mike in 3 or 4 rounds; Julian Jackson? Hells bells, tough as Torito was they'd still be looking for his head; Hagler, come on! I think that Tony Ayala is happier inside a high security prison; he did his damdest to get there, (wonder how Mike Ayala is doing? he could box! Hope he put the drug addiction way behind him).
