Rooney is world class. So are Gerrard and Lampard on their day. Those days have been for their clubs, but nevermind...

Anyway, there's 3 right there.

Cmon, you cant be serious about this you wanna take off the rose tinted spectacles england does not have ONE world class footballer. I'll probably get a hard time for saying this but its true.
Rooney, Owen, Lampard, Gerrard, Beckham, Ashley Cole - how many players are better in there respective positions? We have world class defenders too.

Englands players are world class by and large. Aside from that, Greece managed to win the Euro cup when they certainly don't have more talented players than England does......... the difference is how the players play as a team and that is the problem with England, its not that we haven't got the players but we havent got the tactics or the right harmony as a team.

Some of Englands players are world class.

But players dont win tournaments.

Teams do.

As a team, England are shit.

I dont know what all the fuss is about, or why anyone expects them to do any good.

I have to disagree about most of the above except possibly rooney how is on the way to becoming world class but isnt quite there yet imo. Take your pick from Zidane, makalele, ronaldinho, shevchenko, roy keane, pavel nedved and an ageing cafu for any of these positions, beckham and ashley cole especially imo are not deserving of the 'world class' tag that is thrown about by people.

These are world class players and none of the england players are in the same league. Dont get me wrong im not doubting that the england players are very good players but they are not world class. The england defence in my opinion has the potential to be the best in the world but seem to lack the ability to concentrate for a full 90 which at this level and the players they will be facing cost them dearly. Like i said before i as much as anybody would really like to see england do well, but imo they are just not quite good enough at the minute.
Rose tinted specs with Bobby Robson.imo

England were shit in Euro 88.
Also in 90 Belgium out played us hit the post a few times we had luck there.
Also Cameroon should have beaten us.

But he still would have done a better job than Ericsson/[/qu

But England played a darn sight better in '88 than they did last night and remember Robson got us into the Semie final where we lost on penalties!... hardly a disgrace and out best run in the Cup since '66. The way things are now we'll be lucky to get past qualifying.... :x

The fact is that England has the talent to do well but they haven't been formed into a team properly. Germany have always done well regardless of the talent of their plaers because the coaching is much better and the players play as a team much better.
Perhaps we should go for a German coach next!. 8)

1 thing to remember about Robson is he wasted the talent of John Barnes who imo was the best English player of the generation. He should have found a way to play Barnes and Wadle

This is no knee jerk reaction though, the last 3 games have been pretty shit but there's been plenty of calls for a change of manager for a while now. England have not been convincing in a long time. All through this qualifying group England have been average apart from beating N.Ireland 4-0 but they hardly played well that day just scored 3 goals in 5 minutes which made the result seem better.

England have the players but they dont play as a team, and when push comes to shove its the managers job to get them playing together. I fail to see how a passionless quiet guy like Eriksson can motivate the England players.

for me its the formation and the midfield thats the big problem. that midfield is too samey.

gerrard, beckham and lampard r all very similar players and don't vary it up enuff or give us enuff pace.

i'd like to c one of the 3 dumped and shaun wright phillips to be played wide right. also perhaps ashley cole moved to left wing to sort that sorry left hand side out.

get back to 4-4-2 and 2 wingers to give us some pace and balance. :TU:

If you go back to the world cup England had a great chance to beat Brazil... 1-0 up and 11- to-10 men up... yet we lost it down to tactics!. Really Sven should have gone then... he'd done as much with the team as he could and had reached his level. Now since he's stayed things are going back, Sven is has become distracted by off the field activities and the constant hounding of the media and the players have lost confidence in him and themselves.
It would be a disaster to wait until we don't qualify or go out early before getting shot of Sven.

Can the FA afford to get rid of him? They'd have to pay off the rest of his contract at £4 million a year. His contract runs until 2008.

Quite why they put him on this ridiculous contract to stop him joining Chelsea is beyond me, when has he ever looked worth that sort of money?

Posted: 08 Sep 2005, 10:10

If only Chelsea had got him.....

Face it, we're going to scrape the qualifying, win the odd game in Germany, and then get knocked out in the quarter-finals. It's been obvious for some time.

That is being optimistic I think, the way they are playing they'll be lucky to qualify. And if they do group stages perhaps is all they can hope for.

At least you're not Welsh! We are shit at the moment. There was an 18 month period a couple years back where were actually quite good but its gone tits up.

Some of the new players Toshack has brought in are shite, Ricketts and Duffy at full back are decidedly average.

Think Duffy will make a lowly premiership club in a few years time, not so keen on Ricketts.

Crickey we are playing a player from the SPL and not Rangers or Celtic.

Toshack should get Savage back, we need him in central midfield.

And Hargreaves for Lampard when you're chasing a goal?

I'm not English, if I was I would be fuming that's 3 diabolical performances in a row now.

Shame Wales got beaten tonight, 1 v 0 but we are in transition at the moment so to be expected away to Poland!
Who's going to take the job for less than £4 million a year? :o

The FA have shot themselves in the foot.

Are they going to pay that ridiculouys salary to any other manager?

Been following this thread with amusement.

All of a sudden England are the same as the rest of the UK.

As for a German coach take heed the name Berti Vogts come to mind.

The other night Scotlands under 21's almost beat the Italians only to discover Ranier Bonhof had selected a banned player.

WE in the rest of the UK are rolling with glee at the demise of this squad.

However, I have always maintained the players have to shoulder some blame.

The Scotland squad were just not interested under Vogts but have been resurrected with Walter Smith.

I believe Ericsson is a prize A'hole and should have gone a long time ago.

As for Sir Bob, nah his days are long gone. You need younger blood.

Alan Curbishley is in the frame amongst a list of others.

If England want to succeed you have to go back to the grass roots. Starting with an English coach. One who understands the English mentality and can motivate his team, one who has a passion for English football and not the £4m a year package.

You have a team that are not gelling and yes there are some players in there who would appear in a world eleven.

Its time someone kicked Beckhams arse and told him where to play and not give him a free role. He has an incredible talent and should be played on the right where he excels.

Just because you are a multi millionaire superstar doesn't give you the right to believe the world cup is yours just by turning up. You have to go out and win it and that is NOT going to happen for England until they get their heads out of the clouds and play football.

There has to be a passion for success. That is why the latin American nations play the way they do. Its also why they turn out more boxing legends than we do too.

I am glad Scotland have turned around under Smith and I know Toshack will do the same at Wales given time & support.

But England have to let go this prima donna atitude they have. You are shit like the rest of us and until you sack that twat in charge and bring in someone who understands English football and can get them to play as a team you are not going to win anything.

Well done Northern Ireland the other night & well done to the Welsh at the weekend for highlighting this fact that you are not any better than the rest of us. You have a pool of players any national manager would die for but can't get it right.

So stop moaning and smell the shit like the rest of us have to do.

Ottmar Hitzfield is a bigger a'hole than Ericsson.

Just read this mornings local papers and his gaff about the only reason Scotland have turned round their fortune is due to Vogts coaching.

Ha. We were shit under Vogts, the man couldn't communicate or motivate the team.

We are still shit but it smells nicer.

My only advice to England is find an English coach. Don't go for a German unless its the Kaiser himself. Only Kaiser Franz has the pedigree to go and win the World Cup.

Vogts is one of the best coaches of the world. Discuss with him over football. His knowledge is unbelievable. BTW has he the best record as a german national coach. What he reached in England 1996 with about 10 injuries is more worth than the World Cup 1990. He was a Youth Coach in Germany from the 80´s on and was so one of the formers of the 1990 champions. Guys like Vogts, Bonhof and Osieck did all the work and Beckenbauer, the secretary-fornicating trashtalker, got all the credit. he did far nothing. Vogts has one failure: his press-work and communication is not good. it was not good in Germany, so it was even worse in Scotland. But IMO Vogts and Bonhof improved the way the scotish team played. Vogts is actually rumoured to become the national coach of South Korea.....
