I'd still tip Danny to come in the heavier man.

British heavyweight boxing is in the almighty doldrums.
Williams v Harrison. I gave him a 2/10.
Williams v Skelton. Maybe 3.5
Slight improvement from Williams, but only little. Skelton may have 'won' but that he couldn't stop Williams shows his limitations in the skills dept. and also the absense of a huge single punch.
I am a big fan of McGuigan as a pundit, but last night I disagreed with him severely when he said "Williams deserves that world title shot now" Does he fornicate. He may have just beaten Britons two best undefeated propects. But we all know that these prospects are/were Audley Harrison and Matt Skelton. Harrison we now know his failings, yet still shook Danny near the end. Skelton has a great heart but near zero talent, yet both took Danny to an MD.
In no shape or form does Williams deserve a shot against Vaulev. He needs to look first and formost at his size and fitness, and second of all at the mental side of things. He held it together last night, but at times he looked shaky for me, plodding around and going off-balance.
Valuev-Williams would just be embarrasing imo. Williams would be left stranded in that, although funnily enough I do see him perhaps sticking out most of the rounds.
Even at Euro level, I fear he can only succumb to a replay of SSS, which was completely painful. Vidoz he'll maybe stand half a chance with, but if it's Krasniqi or SSS again he'll be stopped.
Havn't said yet, which I should have done first, is that it was a great fight last night. An intriguing tussle to see who the British #1 is. I hope there is a rematch. Problem is though, that's for the British no. 1 At world or even euro level these two are going to be hopelesslay exposed for some of the reasons I gave above.
What they do next I don't know. I personally fear that a world title fight will result in only very bad things.

I agree. I think he won it clearly.
However, I also think he could not have complained if he had points deducted for use of the head, so perhaps it balanced out.

Yeah, i agree, but that Skeltons tacitcs and he rumbled Williams, Williams was like a scared kid in there fighting for his life.

Danny won fair and square... Skelton was lucky not to have been chucked out by that incompetant ref. Had Skelton used his fists as much as his head he probably would have won... terrible tactics by Skelton... Williams didn the cleaner and classier work, well done Danny...

The fact of the matter Slapsie is that he WASN'T deducted any points. The decision was a load of shite.
This sport keeps shooting itself in the foot - and more importantly costing me money.
I can't be arsed to read this thread as am still sick but my answer to the question is DW's win is not good for British boxing. In any way. He fought better than he did against Harrison purely because he was forced to by a man who isn't very good either but was robbed.
Why is boxing looking after Danny Williams?

Yes, when Danny was boxing he was much the better. And Terry O'Connor had another bad night.
Those 'terrible tactics' are all Skelton knows. But they won him more rounds than the other fella. Only my view, of course.
Once again, Williams boxed in spurts and let someone else who wanted it more have it. And he gets a big fornicating pat on the back for doing so.

yes.
williams is younger and has more of a name after those fights with tyson and klitschko.
skelton is 39 and far too crude to ever cut it at top level.

Williams has already been at the top level and failed. He's also been at a level below the top and failed. His 'name' is somebody who got lucky against the injured shell of Mike Tyson and was pulped by Vitali.

Yes. Williams has shown nothing to suggest he'd fair any better even at european level - the SSS fight was horrible to watch, but Williams wouldn't fare better if he were to go into the same fight now.

And the incredibly average SSS was wrecked by Maskaev, lest we forget!

I suppose the fight is good for British boxing, because millions of people will now recognise who Williams and Skelton are, and there will be a bit of buzz about who the best in Britain is.
A rematch will be the best option for British Heavyweight boxing and the ITV, and it also means that Frank doesn't have to deal with Don King.
Frank has most of Britains heavyweights signed up and a captive audience with the ITV viewers, so all we need is some good matchmaking. I'm sure that last night has provided a good foundation to bring boxing well and truly back into the public eye, and you always heavyweights to do that.

I think the Tyson injury was well and truly overplayed, and Danny well overperformed. Danny threw a 22 punch burst to stop Tyson, something he hasn't done since and rarely before.

Yes its good for British boxing because they can do it again
Even though I don`t see Danny beating `the beast from the east` I think he would stand a better chance than Skelton, given the chance
It was a rough fight and Rawlings didn`t stop going on about it, but Danny did not mention it at all after the fight, he knew what to expect and got on with it, after all these were two big rough guys in there

full respect to both big guys

On the Marquess of Queensberry rules, Danny won it. Skelton's blatant use of his head on several occasions was naughty. DW showed great heart and stamina to not only stay there with Skelton but also to ruff it up with him when it was necessary. Chatting to DW this morning, he said it was imposssible to just try and box Skelton because even then he'd still manage to force you to mix it with him so he had no choice but to stay with him and duke it out. He certainly wasn't impressed with the ref!
Allegedly has said a world title fight is coming round about the autumn time.
I get the impression though that as Skelton is the much bigger ticket seller, he'd have rather Matt won it.

I don't understand what the fuss is about. As soon as either Williams or Seklton would get into the ring with a half-decent heavyweight, either would look like a cheap punching bag.
Seems some have forgotten the Vitali experience rather quickly.

I don't think anyone has forgotten it. Nobody here is picking either of them to do anything other than get hammered in anything approaching world class, even with the piss-poor state of the heavyweight division.

Don't see how anyone can cry robbery, it was a close fight and I gave it to Williams by one round... fact is that Skelton should have lost at least 2 points... in fact I think he should have been disqualified in the 7th round... he's always been rough but he went over the line last night... Danny deserved his win Skelton messed up his own work with his constant fouls...
As for boxing looking after DW I think it was looking after Skelton last night, certainly the ref was and had Skelton won on points I think it would have left a nasty smell behind....

I have to say the state of heavyweight boxing is dier at the moment! Especially in England!
Last nights fight was a brawl, Williams got scared and Skelton got dirty (far play to him thou) That ref was also massivly biased towards Skelton, U cant keep using ur head once u been warned and carry on bein dirty! He deserved to have points deducted for that. But then williams didnt complain at the end, fair play!
In my opinion it was a draw, what did any off them do that was so impressive that made them stand out. Neither should skill or talent although both showing alot of heart (skelton more so i felt)
Harrison is a joke and I hope he stays around long enough for me to turn pro and beat him his ass, and both williams and skelton are far below average on a world level! (valuev aint much better but then thats a hole different arguemennt)
Williams has never beaten anyone decent and that win against tyson was a fluke! It took the guy 22 punches to knock him out. 22 punches!!!!! 22 punches by any 20 stone man should kill you not just knock u down! The guy cant punch, he aint fit, he has little body movement and is so slow!
I think this world title fight everyone seems to think williams deserves with valuev should go ahead! It will be funny to watch 2useless talents scrap around the ring! Or better still give it to audley, im sure this guy is sat at home convinced he can still beat every man in the world...with ease!
There all a bunch of trash talkin wanna bes! Stop talkin, and start trainin alittle more! I wish lennox would come back beat them all up and show 'um how its done!
How heavy do u think williams will come in if the fight wit Valuev goes ahead. This man is mosterous in size, im sure willaims would look like butter bean....lol

Well at the risk of being nationalistic I think if you compare the size of England and America (not to mention the average sizes of the people in these countries!) we aren't doing too bad over here really.... i mean what hotshots have America got?.... probably the best Heavyweight the US can offer is a 38 yearold ex middleweight champ whose about 30 pounds overweight. I actually think both Williams and Skelton would give Valuev a good fight, and I don't really see many American heavies that would do much better....

In good shape compared to who? Skelton looked like a fat bastard, his gut moved wen he walked. Theres no excuss for comin to fight lookin like that. Whats the point in bein fat, both guys would have been far better athletes had they come in trimer and leaner.
'Skelton a little fleshy', try over weight fatty! What u mean is williams gut didnt stick out as far as skeltons.
Still no crdited given!
