I guess the difference is though, the column in the news of the world is clearly just an opinion column, whereas boxing news is a trade magazine which carries (theoretically at least) more influence.

Personally I find Frank's NOTW column laughable, it's so vitriolic but then the news of the world is only fit for tramps stuffing down their sleeves on a cold night, emergency toilet paper, or light wanking material on a sundway when badly hung over.

How true

If ITV want to show top fights at 10pm then they should put up the money. Until then they cant complain about the times of the fights.

I understand where you are coming from Jimbo but you have more boxing knowledge than 99.99% of the population so you aren't a fair sample.

The NOTW is not clearly an opinion column to those who know fornicate all. They will take what is written there as fact much of the time - especially as it is written as such.

I must be mellowing in my old age - or perhaps it's because Warren has been doing a super job since terrestrial in 'proper fan' terms - but I'm starting to like the fella. Sounds mental, I know.

But he's given a free platform for his agenda every week in the best selling paper in the country. This is the only boxing text most people read. Draw your own conclusions.

No I am in agreement with you Ian, notice the parentheses which says (In theory).

I should have made it more clear. In theory a trade paper has more influence as Boxing News is the 'bible of British Boxing. However, as we know, in reality, the circulation of boxing news is miniscule compared to the News of the Screws and as you say the average Joe will read Warren's comments without any filtering and take it as gospel, whilst those of us with more background roll our eyes and titter at the spouting of invective.

Like you Ian, I've developed a lot of respect for Warren lately, and I can certainly understand his attitude towards the article in Boxing News, and what he sees as constant character assassination and attacks on his professionalism.

Fact of the matter is this, allegedly has been the biggest promoter in the UK for a long while now, and of late has delivered some huge fights which may have been a long time coming, but were bigger than anything anyone else has done in recent memory.

The whole business with Hatton's revolving door of opponents lately, shows that there is no substitute for long standing expertise in making deals on the international stage.

I wish fight Academy the best of luck, they are having to deal with aspects of the game which I don't think they've encountered before. None of their fighters has ever been in position Hatton is in now, looking for the very biggest fights in an American setting. It's new territory and they are going to have to learn certain things on the fly, as anyone would.

In the long run I think it will be good for UK boxing to have another promotional outfit that are capable of brokering deals at the highest level, and the competition is likely to spur Warren, with his junkyard dog mentality on to making bigger and better fights.

And can you find me the quote that is 'on record' where Sharman said he was disappointed with the figures?
