Yes, King talked him into returning but he would not give him these amounts. he paid peanuts to his heavyweight champions. I had the pleasure to talk some words with him in and after the Valuev-Donald-afterfight-press-conference and he loves the german money.......
this is the reason why he sent Brewster, Donald and Ruiz over here. And he wants Arthur Abraham to fight in the US vs Taylor
BTW for Don King the best british fighter is not Hatton, Calzaghe or Witter. It is Amir Khan!

Morning,
Just out of curiosity why are people interested in what fighters earn?
I'm not trying to pick a fight but surely as fans our concern should be what the fighters do in the ring not what they earn for being there?
It just seem's a bit pointless.
Fighter's will all earn different wages same as everyone else.

Well, I've been told by people inside boxing, that part of the reason purses are not announced over here, is that often fighters do not want their earnings revealed for reasons of their own.....not saying that's true in every case of course, but it's something I've heard.
When you buy a walkman, it doesn't mean Sony have to reveal their company profits and finances to you.

well said james.
I wouldn't feel the need to tell you guys what i earn so why should the fighters? And what bearing does it have on anything anyway?

but sony like Nike would come under heavy criticism if it was found they were using "sweat shops"

Yeah we're not disputing you know the Sports Network purses which is what you appear to be alluding to, but regarding other promoters' fighters you are pissing in the wind as much as the next man.

The other side to that though, is that boxing, unlike other sports, is often decided by how much fighter A is paid compared to fighter B, when it comes to making fights happen.
When Manchester United play Arsenal, they aren't haggling over who is 'the draw' or how much of the TV rights each should get. All of this is covered by the FA and FIFA, and so there's complete transparency (aside from corruption on transfers etc) for those who need access to the figures.
You'll notice I am playing devils advocate (not to be confused with Dick Advocaat) here, there are two sides to this. I think that in a business where money talks as loudly in determining who fights who, it's naive to suppose people are not going to talk about fighter's purses, and especially where there are such huge disparities between the earnings of the elite and those only a couple of levels below.
In football 1st division footballers are paid extremely well, and even 2nd and 3rd division players do alright, but in boxing you have the likes of Mayweather earning millions of dollars, and Marquez, another elite level fighter, getting $30,000 for a hard night's work.

Actually, they do or rather to the wider world in general. Every company has it's audited accounts and I am sure even SN will have a register at companies house telling you what is paid to whom. Perhaps not down to the level of individuals but to directors as a whole and any extraordinary payments
For the most part, people are interested in what fighters earn in the same way they are interested in the wealth of pop stars and film stars. I have a prurient interest in that too. I find it kind of interesting to see how much evander made or tyson made and pissed away. I havea great deal less interest in what a regular fighter makes. I am just pretty sure they damn well earn every penny!
But, I take the point. Would people be so quick to post on here what they earn?
Anyway, we all know the real money's in publishing
:( yeah right.

Exactly, it's naive of anyone to think that people aren't going to be interested in how much the elite level fighters are earning.
Nobody is generally crying out to know how much Paul Bonson is getting for his next fight because it's too similar to what they might earn, but hearing Hatton is getting X million is of course going to pique people's curiosity.
The fact is fighters probably have a legal right not to have their earnings delcared to the public, which is quite right. The total purse is always revealed in a purse bid because it is mandatory, but where the fight is not a mandatory I doubt there is the same requirement.
Someone obviously records the figures e.g local commission, but that doesn't mean they are in the public domain.

I heard Williams got just 150 k when he took on Tyson and about 400 k when he fought Klitch. I got talking to a women at a party a few years ago who was married to a British pro, he'd fought for a couple of intercontinental titles and he might have even had a crack at the British title, either way he was a pro fighting on TV will a fairly good record and she said he'd never earned over 10 k for a fight and she was of the immpession that boxing was a mugs game and wished he'd get a "proper job". Ive also heard Peter Buckly and those kind of journey men fighters tend to get paid between £500- £3000 depending on who they are taking, not bad if your fighting once a week, but god damn it must be a hard way to earn a living

Yeah, but guys like Buckley don't come to win, they generally come to survive and spoil and occasionally when they fancy their chances, to nick a points win. Earning a grand a week isn't bad money mate, admittedly there are safer ways to earn 50k+ a year, but for a lot of those guys, where else would they get that kind of money. Not saying all fighters are idiots, but a lot of fighters aren't neccesarily coming from good educational or social backgrounds, which is why they fight in the 1st place.
Buckley and Bonsos probably made more money in their careers than a lot of guys who started out with promise, lost one or two big fights, and then retired with a 25-14 type record.

Hey good luck to them, ive got a lot of respect for those kind of fighters, taking on the latest hot prospect every week, i can't think of his name but there is an american Heavy weight journey man who has fought just about every decent prospect on the way up and apparently he's earned millions over the years, i guess the purses are bigger for the heavies especially in the states.

You can see why guys like Buckley and co slip into a journeyman losing streak mentality as they are come to survive for 4 rounds and give a prospect experience without upsetting the applecart. The more dangerous journeymen sorts probably struggle more for work as they are unpredictable.

I know that when Glenn Mcrory held the IBF Crusier tile he got £26,000 for his first defence, when he fought Lennox Lewis he got £80,000

Yep, also, by coming to survive and not geting knocked out, they don't have to worry about suspensions for what is it 60 days, forget now.

Boxing Chat - your ability to talk out of your arse is unbelievable!
You may SN purses as an employee but to allude to other promoters then as someone said you are pissing in the wind like the rest of us.
This was started as a thread with someone asking a genuine question and yet again you turn it into a confrontational thread
Now I know this is not very classy and against previous advice I have given others but please GO FORTH AND MULTIPLY!!!

My mate is an ex-boxer and he told Alex Moon was getting £15K per defence of his Commonwealth title and that Paul Lloyd got £50K for fighting Barrera. My mate was due to to make his pro debut about 3 years ago against Baz Carey but the fight fell through. His purse would have been £1000 for a four rounder.

Scrapped £10k....How much do you earn?
Mike Holden's appearances as an extra on Coronation St tell us he hardly made his fortune thru bpro boxing BC.
I know plenty of lower rung pros who hold down full time jobs. Boxing pays for the family holiday or christmas...its a bonus to their income, not the sole source.
Is that why Tyson is in the Simpsons then to boost his income?
Did Hatton not do Coronation Street, he skint as well. Robbie Williams done Eastenders to pay for his Gas Bill did he?
I think you will find that Holden gives alot of his money to the Church which is commendable but obviously affordable.
Youre right. I recall going to a show where he banned card girls from the ring during his contest.
Nice bloke all the same.

I understand that you are, in fact, not allegedly.
I suspected you were'nt allegedly, but then someone pointed out that if Mr Warren spent as much time as you do on websites there would be no fights on ITV.
Apologies for the mistaken Identity
