This thread got me thinking (which is dangerous) and I've had to have a bet on Walliams to win at 3/1 (£20).

As I remember, this is voted for by the public and we always like to see an underdog win.......in fact I think I'm going to have to double/triple my bet

(Glyn is 7/1 to win BB which I think is decent odds, so I've had a speculative tenner on him, although Pete is still the massive fave at 1/9)


I've managed to convince myself that Walliams has won it already, so I've upped my bet to £50.

I've been told that Walliams has been taken out of the running and will not be allowed to win the award, so betting sites should start taking him down soon. How true that is I'm not quite sure.

For a deserving winner who won't get anywhere near the top 3 look no further than Nicole Cooke. There's a good article on the BBC website about her.

If a bloke had been performing at the top of his sport like she has (at only 23) then he'd probably be one of the most famous people in the country...

Panesar is a good shout what are his odds right now?

You could be right Lvlarc. At the very least, he surely cannot win. Despite his credible efforts, it would make a mockery of the UK's sport "system" - funding etc etc all that.

JC way out to 16s. Thankfully Ellen McArthur has drifted way way out too now, otherwise that would be another embarrasment. "And the UK sports personality of the year 2006, for her fantastic achiements, er, two years ago..."

3-1 for Panasar, looks like a few have cottoned on already for him to drop that low, even with such a dearth of nominees. I remember an article in the Observer mentioning him as a possible winner a couple of weeks ago....

Murray will win the young sports personality I would have thought.

Good point but if he got say a semi-final at the US Open he would stand a chance of winning the top prize due to the sheer lack of other suitable nominees?

He's going to be seeded now too, I'll wait to see what his draw looks like but might be worth a couple of bob.

When does the voting close? I am not up to speed on such matters!

Your logic is flawed. Sports Personality of the Year isn’t decided by boxing enthusiasts, but by the general public.

Daisy Smith, if 25 Acacia Avenue doesn’t know who the hell Calzaghe is. She’ll vote for someone like Gerrard or Walliams…

Walliams is a good bet you know.

At a rough guess, around 60-70% of the population of this country are idiots who vote for who The Sun tells them they should vote for. (a bit like in general elections - which is a proven fact).

Therefore Walliams could walk it.

Murray beat Federer in straight sets

Good performance in US Open now and he has a very good chance.

These kind of bets should always be taken early - odds can vary wildly...

I got Hatton at 36-1
Calzaghe 54-1
Panesar - 10-1
Murray - 14-1

Unfortunately I also took beckham and Rooney - can't remember the odds....

Andy Murray is now fav on betfair at 3/1. Monty 7/2, Gerrard 7s, Walliams 16s (thank god, no offence Chambers :( )

Justified favourite though? Yes, he's just beaten Federer, may well end the year in the top #20, but could go out in the 3nd, 3rd round at flushing meadows. Ok that's enough.

We'll see what happens in the gold and cricket this weekend, but otherwise, this could be it. Unless Calzaghe gets back into the running after completing the Veit trilogy?

........and the Worlds worst bet award goes to...................Stuart Chambers for his ridiculous bet on David Walliams to win the BBC Sports personality of the year

(I still haven't wrote his chances off though, it goes down to the public vote and we all know what cnuts they can be, I'm just racked off that he's gone from 3/1 to 16/1 since I put the bet on )

ffs, favourite on betfair is now Zara Philips at 7/4ish after her three-day eventing victory at the World Equestrian Games.

With all due respect to her and her achievements, this is surely the lay of the year given that a) relatively few will be aware of her success, and even fewer will care and/or be able to measure how much of an achievement this is.

Next it's Murray at 5s, Panesar and Darren Clarke at 11s.
