Maybe it should have been stopped but I can understand why it wasn't. How many times did Jim Watt start to say Macklin was finished when before he could even finish his sentance Macklin would unload with 4 or 5 hard shots. He showed great heart but I agree with people who said where was the jab and defence?
Great fight, Macklin fought the wrong fight but take nothing away from Moore he was superb. Lets hope he can make some waves at a higher level.

Yes but it's not a fight to the death though is it. I know that KO made my blood run cold.
And the KO is not the only reason some are saying the fight should have been stopped, as it seems a lot of people were hoping his corner would save him before the 10th round, I know I was.
You can compare fights, but the fact is he was obviously running on empty for quite a few rounds, and Moore was landing cleanly time after time, jerking his head back and forth. Maybe you didn't see it, but he needed to be rescued and his corner failed miserably.

I think Terrence I would say there was a strong argument for pulling Macklin out of there, but I understand why they didn't. He managed to summon a spurt of effective punching even in the 9th round, but those spurts were quite clearly becoming more and more sporadic and farther apart. By the 8th round, he wasn't really capable of fighting effectively for more than 30 seconds in the round.
Macklin really blew his load by the fourth round, he never really found a second wind after that. It wasn't the work rate, as I've seen fighters throw more shots in a round, but the fact he was putting full force into almost every blow. Had he amped down the power a bit and done the good work to the body with a bit more patience, I think he could have won the fight, because he was clearly hurting Moore to the body. Moore showed incredible toughness, because some of those hooks were very big and right on the button, you could see him having to suck down the pain on a few occasions.
Unfortunately it was Macklins's tank which ran dry and not Moore's it was like two guys in the desert with a canteen of water, one tried to run to safety and used all his water up quickly, whilst the other walked calmly taking sips along the way and made it out alive, whilst the other gulped all of his down and collapsed in a heap.

For me it was plain to see the guy was running on instinct in the 8th and 9th round - Macklin was still competitve, but that shouldnt wash over the reality that he had shot his bolt.
When he got tagged by the ko punch he was absolutely wide open and flaying like a man who was out of answers and was working on instinct/hype..whatever. This was no different to how he had been working in the previous few rounds, but the clear instruction in Moore's corner at the end of the ninth was to go out and get him (they could see Maclkin was out of it)
Bearing that in mind I was surprised that Macklin's corner where totally blinded to the fact their man was out of steam - Yes it was a close fight, and Macklin went out on his shield and that's all well and good.
I'm just a little surprised, that so many people couldnt see it coming, it looked obvious to me from about the 8th onwards.

Or in another case how badly was Julian Jackson being beaten-up, including an eye injury, versus Bomber, plus John David Jackson beating up Castro quite badly. I am sure we could come up with more if we throw in cuts, how many times did Basillo win fights in which he was badly cut. Razor Ruddock got stopped for having his head pushed back and looking tired.
Closer to home Darren Stubbs looked absolutely spent earlier this year against Amer Khan, he lost steam on his shots (according to Moore, who should know, Macklin had steam on his shots even in the tenth) and was being beaten up only to catch Amer late and put Amer in a position where he sudddenly looked tired and gone. Amer was brought out for another round, weathered the storm and saw out a win. At points both men had seemed spent.
At times Macklin looked spoent and Oliver did say he had shot his bolt yet he again came back in the tenth to throw meaningful shots aftere taking part in a thrilling ninth round. People around me were saying Macklin looked tired but not one voice asked for the fight to be stopped, until it had been stopped.
This is boxing, not lawn green bowling. The reason people are saying it should have been stopped is because a great KO punch was landed and we have the benefit of hindsight.
Corrales wasnt staggering around like a drunk for the amount of time Macklin was.... Corrales vs Castillo was a much more 50-50 fight while Macklin was taking the brunt of the punishment against Moore, while Jamie was blocking much of Matts punches... vastly different fights mate!...

You sound like a melodramatic woman. Macklin was throwing shots in the tenth and punctuated every claim that he was tired with hard shots. What I saw was a good two-way battle with a KO finish that has been blown out of proportion because one fighter went for precautionary testing.
We could stop the fights when we suspect a KO blow may be landed (and cause chaos) but that one was a bolt from the blue.
Matthew got stopped at the right moment, end of story.
Fighters running on empty do not take part in rounds like the ninth.
And you sound like an ignorant toss pot, well done
If you didn't see that as a bad knockout then let's hope you never decide you want to become a cornerman or referee. I'm sure you would have tolled the full ten count over Macklin if you'd been given the chance.

What an amazing fight. A real epic.
Matthew Macklin
Jamie Moore
Brilliant action from both in a fight that lived up to and beyond
my expectations. I'm very grateful to both for the entertainment
they provided.
Jamie Moore was just brilliant.
p.s. I thought Macklin should have been pulled out at the end of the 9th
round, but it's a very tough call to make in the heat of the moment.

Get a grip on yourselves. Or better yet face up to the stark truth. Boxing involves KO's. If Matt would have been withdrawn people would be crying about the lack of a definitive end, probably the same people who cry to this day about the fact Vitali K was stopped prematurely even though half his face was hanging off. Corrales went down heavily and had sagged at various points in his fight with Castillo, if Mightwarrior would have been in his corner Corrales would have lost by corner-man-weeping-on-the-ring-apron DQ.
You also do not pull out a guy who has just put his own stint into an amazing round. Also factor in the ringside perception that Macklin was ahead on points in the eyes of some so he certainly could have been seen to be winning the fight by his corner team. Moore was blocking a lot of shots yet he was also taking a lot of body shots and he did look pretty rough himself at the end of the ninth. You could see the KO coming but that has been the case in many fights, are cornermen now expected to halt a fight because they suspect their guy could get KO'd? Why not refuse to sign a fight contract on that basis?
Macklin looked tired a number of times, he also landed some big shots in the ninth round and Moore said he was hurt throughout the fight plus Moore sagged a little after the ninth round. That is why he was encouraged by his corner who told him Matt had shot his bolt. Despite this Matt came out in the very next round and threw some decent punches. He looked tired in patches then would land some well-balanced shots. So we are stopping fights nowadays because one man looked tired?
Face it, a lot of the problem lies with the fact that the fight was given a definitive KO ending that made too many people feel uncomfortable with the finish and looking for scapegoats in retrospect. A lot of these same people post on a forum in which Audley Harrison is regularly called a coward for not putting it all on the line and providing excitement. Well guys at some point you have to accept that purely exciting, not controversial, fights end in often brutal KO's. You also have to accept that people ask for exciting fights, technically or not you still want closure and you got it on Friday. Matt went down hard and he went down heavy, he was tired but Jamie also brought his 1-2 into the fight at the right moment and unloaded a peach of a shot to KO his opponent.
Respect to those who screamed 'stop the fight' from the fifth round. Greater respect for those who said 'I could watch this all night long' after the ninth, as I am sure many did before backtracking when Matt went down.
Incidently the KO of Michael Medor was more worrying as he got caught was stopped only to collapse in the ring after the fight had been waved off. Matt was clearly dehydrated and wiped-out after a tough fight, a fight that the fans will remember and part of the remembrance will be the KO finish. Accept it is part of boxing or maybe watch female synchronised swimming.
Sorry mate, but I dont think you've seen enough fights by the sounds of it... boxing involves koes yes, but it can also lead to serious injury amd death when fighters are allowed to go on too long... to say that the Macklin ko came out of the blue makes me wonder what fight you were watching... if you dont think it should have been stopped, fair enough, but you should have respect for those that do think it should have been stopped earlier... some of us have seen and been at simular fights where fighters have been severely injured or died and at the end of the day a 'great fight' isnt worth a life... I'd rather see fights stopped too early rather than too late... live to fight another day... its better for all that way...

People may deny this yet look what happened to Tszyu, legend smeared due to being pulled out of a fight that lost competitiveness after the middle rounds. In the final round of that fight Kostya took a largely one-way beating, he was retired in his corner and articles popped-up calling him a coward.
There would have been complaints irregardless of the outcome. Hell we get domestic fight of the year, a back and forth struggle, a KO ending, the potential of Moore moving up a class and what reaction is given in some quarters?
The commentary was shit and Smith takes it up the shitter for cash or broadcasting opportunities. Smith does a poor job on many fights, do we really need to bring it up every time along with the threads about the guy

Slag them off once or twice then give it a rest.
Proof if it was needed that if moaning became an Olympic sport us boxing fans would win gold time after time.
Terrence, whilst I agree there will always be some who moan, I think it's fair to say that people are saying it should have been stopped because they were worried about the effect on Macklin. I'm sure he would have taken those shots fine earlier in the fight, his punch resistance was totally shot.
I agree that it was made difficult for his corner because he was actually winning on two cards by that point, (according to post fight analysis) and his little surges during the rounds did enough to suggest he could land one big punch which would end the fight.
I won't give undue criticism to his corner, it's a tough call, and at the end of the day they gave their guy the chance because they thought he could pull it off. However, to a neutral observer, Macklin looked completely and utterly fucked at the end of the 9th round, and did look like he was going to get hurt in there before the fight was over. Though he connected with some fairly big shots, it seemed very unlikely he was going to get that stoppage in the last three rounds as he was taking shots that were more effective in return.

Macklin was still in the fight: the referee had no reason to stop it at the end of the ninth, Macklin certainly didn't want it stopped.
Obviously after a chilling KO that ends with a night at the hospital, you look for whether it should have been stopped - either by the corner or the referee, but when I was watching the fight in "real time", it didn't even occur to me that Macklin shouldn't have gone out or been sent out by his corner.

Actually Silkov I do not say it came out of the blue, you are doing a Barry there, I say it was a peach of a shot, peaches are peach coloured, maybe you are colour blind? I also say in my fight report that Matt shot his bolt in the early rounds and I noted that only one person was going to win by KO. I pointed out that he took rounds one and two before Moore took the next three and that Matt paid a high price for any rounds he won.
I have seen a fair few fights - that whole boxing snob 'I have been around boxing for years' thing is pretty poor form, maybe I have also followed boxing a long time and am lucky enough to be a realist - including the Stubbs one this year in which both guys seemed tired and 'gone' at various points only to regroup.
Boxing involves serious injury and deaths and you have to accept that and not get twitchy every time there is a tough fight going on, that is why we are fans and not cornermen or boxers. It is a shame you saw some serious injuries happen before your eyes but if it has left you deeply traumatised you need to get out and into a different sport. The reason you have not is probably down to the fact you like to see exciting fights. Well exciting fights are hard, tough slogs and often end by KO. Matt was tired yet why is no one explaining how they advocate stopping a fight when a fighter has just taken part in a great two-way round and hurt his opponent in that round.
I am not being disrespectful, people posted on this strand that they thought the fight was stopped prematurely, I have posted that it should not be and the way I see it that opinion is forged post-fight.
This fight was stopped when it was supposed to be stopped. TO suggest Macklin should have been pulled insults his performance really.
You said it was a 'bolt from the blue' but anyway my intention is not to have an argument with you about this as that would be silly, I would however say to you to watch the Odin fight when he got injured... very simular fight and situation. As for it being insulting to suggest that Macklin should have been pulled out, nothing could be further from the truth... Macklin had already pushed himself beyond the call of duty and needed to be saved from himself... thats not insulting in any way!.

I can't say with absolute authority, as I haven't rewatched the fight since Friday night, but didnt' Macklin tumble over from sheer exhaustion in the 10th?
After the ninth I thought Macklin was 'gone', but not enough to justify stopping the fight, however once I saw him stumbling around in the 10th, prior to the knockdown, I actually said to my mate as we were watching it something along the lines of "He's completely gone. They should pull him out before he gets hurt."
Now I know it's always easy to say that from the comfort of your armchair, but if I and other could see from TV that he was absolutely f**ked, then surely his corner could?
I honestly don't think the parallels with other fights I've read to date have been that valid - I've rarely seen anyone as utterly out on their feet from sheer exhaustion as Macklin was just before the conclusion - hardly a surprise after such an incredible effort.

Terence, even you have to admit that Macklin was way, way beyond being a little leg-weary at that stage... and prior to the knockdown it was clear that he had nothing left in his shots - he was just pushing them out after that huge final effort in the ninth...

I think it would have been near impossible for the referee to stop the fight before it happened, there was nothing to justify it.
I do agree entierly though that Macklin was more than a little leg weary. In the fourth round I made a note to myself (don't know why I was writing a fight report, I wasn't covering the fight), that Moore would win in the 8th or 9th . That's not hindsight tallking, it was just that after that monumental effort in the 1st two rounds didn't pay off, it seemed clear he was in for a long fight, and hadn't paced himself for it. By the fourth, you could already see him gassing. That aside, I kept thinking Macklin was going to pull off a massive result twice after that when he hurt Moore in the 7th and 9th rounds and looked on the verge of stopping him.
It was harder for his corner to be so objective when their man looked so close to winning as late as the 9th to stop it. They probably hoped that Moore would quit or would himself collapse from exhaustion. Perhaps they were guilty of being too optimistic, but sometimes it's got to be hard to pull your guy out. If he was simply being knocked around the ring round after round I'm sure they would have done, but it was never like that.

Terence, it's not just about knock downs mate, but also how to get up from them - or how you respond to heavy shots.
More often than not, a fighter like Corrales will go down from shots 3 or 4 times in a fight and get up right as rain. His body language looks ok and you can sense he's still dangerous as f***. Or Israel Vasquez the other night.
But the way Macklin was reacting while taking those jarring head shots for the last 4 or 5 rounds was not good at all. His chin was obviously too good for his own good, or he surely should have folded earlier than he did, because his defence was virtualy non existant in there.
Brave fighters like Macklin don't need even braver cornermen.

By the way, Terrence, triffic piece on the aftermath of the fight. I do agree with some, if not all of the thrust of your argument, but that's an aside, you make your points very well and it's very eloquently put together. I liked the old 'reckless scientist' line, unusual analogy, but somehow it works.
I disagree that those who are squeamish are suffering from watered down masculinity however, as I feel I have bollocks the size of a blue whales!
I think what happens is that people start feeling guilty about watching the spectacle when they seem someone get hurt.
For instance, in the Alexander v Takaloo fight, I don't think anyone felt personally guilty, because it was one clean shot, largely against the run of play, which resulted in a sudden and dramatic KO. One clean shot and goodnight Bodrum as they say.
In this case after several rounds of watching an exhausted fighter running on fumes and fighting way way beyond the call of duty, to dredge up every last dreg of will and enerfgy, we saw him not just stopped, but lying on the canvas after going down like he had been shot from behind through the back of the head. It was a pretty sickening one because of the way he just crumpled forward onto his face. The shots weren't awesome bombs, but his resistance was so obviously totally gone by that point that he was a sitting duck. Sort of reminded me of the way Don Curry marched McCrory down and applied the coup de grace.
As an aside, I will say I also had Macklin winning the fight, though not by much. I felt that Moore was ceding rounds by making little offensive effort, and even though Macklin was largely ineffective, he was still the aggressor and landing enough to nick some close ones on my card, in addition to definetly taking the 1st two pretty much unapposed. Think I had him two rounds up at the time of the stoppage. Having said that, I favoured Moore to win no matter how far behind he was, as it seemed unlikely that Macklin could last the fight with Moore having conserved his energy so well barring a sudden KO.
