Does anyone think because Baldomir couldn't do shit, that it would be the same for Margarito or Quintana?

After seeing Paul Williams tonight, Margarito must be rubbing his hands together. For that matter, he'd be doing the same for Floyd - that is, if he ever would face him.

It is presumed that Marg faces Williams after the tough Clottey. I doubt that he'd vacate his belt for Williams.
?
Margarito and Arum have conviently not mentioned Williams name, they also plan to fight Cotto if he beats Quintana - which means yes they'll drop the WBO.

Your making Margarito out to be monster, hes a top prospect but unproven against the best AND HE WONT FIGHT A TOP FIGHTER OTHER THAN FLOYD.

So far Margarito has turned down the opportunity with fights with Williams, Mitchell, Judah, Collazo, Quintanna. So much for he can't get a fight, hes not willing to earn a big fight.

Margaritos best wins 1. Diaz 2. Martinez 3. Cintron 4. Lewis good but now he needs to fight a top5 fighter from Williams, Cotto, Collazo, Quintana, Judah, Baldomir

This used to be the norm; now it's the exception.

I gave up on boxing - admittedly when I was a casual fan - when Hopkins took on Carl Daniels/Hakker & when MAB settled for little Tapia & old Kelley. But last night was an even worse waste of talent, time and money.

Dress it up all you want people. Your reasoning is about a kitsch & lacking in class as that clunky plastic armour that Floyd wore into the ring.
Baldomir is not elite, but neither is Margarito. Baldomir was the linear champ which is historic. Beating Margarito for the WBO wouldnt prove anything down the line.

Mayweather wanted DLH/Mosley/Hatton but none of those made the fight.

Last night wasnt competitive or entertaining, that was because PBF didnt up the tempo - was it hand problems or lazyness? Who knows.

Hmm when did I say PBF has nothing to prove?

Funny that almost every report about the fight I've read, goes along the lines of Mayweather putting on a masterclass.

I can't be assed with this nonsense any more, let's just say you are one of few who think that highly of Margarito. For christ sake he couldn't even beat Santos convincingly.

Where did you read that Margarito accepted the Williams fight?

Apparently Arum did offer Mayweather an opportunity to fight Margarito.... but it was significantly less than for fighting for the lineal championship.

To get Marg vs Mayweather, Arum is going to have to over significantly MORE than what Mayweather was offered (and now recieved) for Baldo.... cause Baldo was the better opponent from an historic point of view.

Margarito is the real deal. He is better than Baldomir in every single area. He's bigger, stronger, faster, younger and has a much bigger punch.

And LOL @ Margarito avoiding Judah. Why would he do that? Margarito would pulverise Judah.....just like he will Mayweather should they fight.

And Margarito has lost to Daniel Santos on cuts twice. He was beating Santos imo in the second fight before his cut got too bad. And that fight was at light-middle.

Did you see Floyd's face in the second last night? He looked scared. And Baldomir can't even punch. Margarito will push Floyd back and grind him up.

Okay Lefthook, how many pints have you had.

Santos was beating Margarito, not saying he was a mile ahead - but was outboxing him. I'm sure I won't be in the minority here.

I don't care if Mayweather "looked scared" he did a master clinic.

Baldo can't punch, ask FORMER champions Judah and Gatti if he can punch. Judah might be china chinned (although still strong enough to last the course vs Mayweather) but Gatti isn't.

I agree with you on Margarito. He's a very good fighter. A lot of people over here are defensive about Floyd. So they definitely have a big reason to criticise Margarito.

Pretty soon, you'll probably get your post deleted for saying anything pro Margarito/against Mayweather.

There have been so many recognized champions at 147. Forrest/Mayorga/Spinks/Judah/Baldomir & now Mayweather. I can't see how Margarito's to blame for the fights not happening.

We definitely know that Mayweather doesn't want Margarito. Because he has turned his down with a different gibberish reason each time.

The only time Judah asked for Margarito was after he was embarrassed by Mayweather and Baldo. i.e. as a last resort. That was last month.

Margarito not elite, LOL

I can see where this is going. i.e. Margarito ducking Paul Williams. I have no proof that the fight is on. Does that mean Marg is ducking him until the fight is signed? I would think he'd love to go after a kid who got flattered by a sparring session.

Interesting that Cotto's name came up. If Cotto beats Quintana, I'd love to see Marg-Cotto. Because Cotto will have major credentials (140 titlists 6 defenses, and a major belt at 147 vs a skilled opponent). Certainly better credentials than Williams.

Whatever, Margarito vs any of those are compelling fights. Add Clottey to those as well.

FYI, I don't see Margarito necessarily as the division's main man. Nor is he my favorite fighter. He's one of several very good fighters that Floyd will not face. He has beaten 5 top 10 welters. There are also good wins that no one knows about/mentions, which is why I brought up the Ankamah win.

A question, all you ppl who want to dress Floyd-Baldo up, I didn't think you all gave a fvck about Baldo. Where are all the Baldo appreciation threads?

Imo Margarito was ahead in the Santos fight. Not only that, Santos looked to be on the way out having used a ton of energy to keep away from Margarito. And that fight means nothing anyway in a Margarito vs Mayweather fight. Daniel Santos is much bigger than Floyd. And not a bad fighter himself.

Haha.....Baldo can't punch! It totally had everything to do with Gatti and Judahs chins. Arturo Gatti has been hurt by everybody, even when he fought much smaller men at lower weights. Its his heart that is good, not his chin and defence. And Zab Judah had a horrible chin even at light-welter, pretty much anyone who hits it has a chance.

Baldomir has 14 KO's in 59 fights. That is horrible for the level he has been fighting at his whole career, up until he fought Judah. Look at his punch technique. He loops slapping punches. This is why he never had a shot at Floyd.

Williams has been calling Margarito out for the last year and he's been his mandatory for 5 months. Just as Arum (PBf's ex promoter) has been calling out Floyd to fight Tony. Margarito keeps saying everyone is ducking him. Winky offered him a payday at 154 and now Williams wants him.

You said, Tony is fighting Williams after Clottey, so you made that up did you?

BTW, who flattened Williams in sparring?

According to Maxboxing, Tony was getting outboxed by Williams in sparring.

VM,

I am pro Mayweather and still think Margarito has a lot to prove, but if you think I will (or have) deleted any posts (or have the intention to) then you are mistaken.

Its all good debate, this forum is not moderated like that (well certainly not by me).

I'm enjoying the dicussion, I would love to see a Margarito fight - but not as much as I would like to see DLH vs Mayweather.

I just want to see Mayweather around for a lot longer than one more fight.... we will all miss him when he does retire.

LOL, Marg must be guilty until proven innocent. I'm not certain he's facing Williams - I have seen no link - but I'm pretty sure he will.

I mean, this is Margarito. Not Calzaghe. Marg will be hard to market without a belt. An exciting win over the lauded Williams would be solid exposure.

But you know, maybe Cotto or Quintana is on the cards. If so, that is better.

I would be surer of Marg facing Williams than Mayweather facing an elite welter.

Personally, I don't like it that Mayweather feels 'that's it, I've done it, I have nothing else to prove'. He is a great ring technician, very refined, accurate, neat & tidy. So let's see him take on all these different sizes and styles at 147.

I know for a fact that Mayweather is an ignorant f*&^ when it comes to other fighters. Just like we see F Warren treat other camps with contempt, we know that Floyd isn't well informed out of the ropes, as to his contemporaries.

He doesn't know who Paul Williams is. He thinks Luis Collazo - who pushed Hatton to the limit and won an epic with JA Rivera at 3 weeks notice - is a "journeyman".

Shit, why didn't he fight Collazo instead of Sharmbayy?

He thinks that because he's 'Universal' champ, that gives him bargaining power over Hatton. Well if Floyd is that sort of champ, Hatton is moreso, for stopping a fearsome, long reigning champion, in the great Tszyu.

I'll tell you what, if Baldo goes on to beat ONE world class fighter after this Mayweather loss, I will give Floyd much credit for winning. I will declare it a win of substance, beayting a bigger, strong, rugged guy like when Whitaker beat JC Vazquez.

Well, Sharmba Mitchell was designed to be Floyd's testing waters at 147.... and at the time his resume was every bit as strong as Collazo. Collazo had just made the 1st defence of his newly crownd WBA title (so I am not sure he was available anyway).... but his two wins as a world champion were only slightly better than Shamba's impressive performance over Chris Smith, Smith was the NABA champion is quite decent.

Isn't Williams in line to fight for the WBA title, I thought his fight with Walter Matthyse was an eliminator for the WBA title. So maybe he is in line to fight the Cotto vs Quintanta winner.

If this does happen, then we have a massive fight for Floyd against the most credible opponent.

I don't think nobody is denying that Marg, Quintanta, Cotto, and Williams have potential.... but they have to prove themselves.

As for your last paragraph, I am sure you are aware that retirement seems likely for Baldomir now.... but I would have the same stance on the big 4 contenters frequently mentioned. If Floyd handles them, they can still come back and increase Floyd's legacy. I'm not calling them crap by any means, just saying they haven't proven themselves.

Collazo's win over JA Rivera looks even better now. Rivera being a very promising junior middle titlist these days.

I like the way he came back against Hatton. He looked like he had nowhere to hide at the beginning. Yet he weathered the storm & had Hatton looking well worried.

Cotto and Quintana are only one fight away from being excellent welters. Look what a win will do for each. Will go nicely with Cotto's 6 WBO defendes at 140. And a Quintana win will complement that win over Julio brilliantly.

Margarito has beaten whatever top ten fighters he can get in the ring. Clottey is a top 10 contender. This should be a war, I can't wait for Margarito-Clottey. Clottey is a top 10 fighter, and is also a hard b~stard.

Not sure what Williams is doing. He's #1 WBO, & probably #1 to Mayweather now. I don't know if Williams actually wants a title shot just yet. Of all the fighters he may be the least ready.

I don't like it that when a fighter just wants to cash in. That's what Mayweather wants. Fight one person with a big reputation. Why not build up a record of substance up at 147?

Why not take genuine risks, i.e. in fights that he could possibly lose.

If Hatton doesn't go after this clown, this bloated super feather who is just waiting to get bullied, then ppl won't forgive Ricky. Mayweather loves to pivot and counter. Hatton is great at keeping on opponents' backs and refusing them a respite.

It's not like Mayweather has the speed of the Chavez fight, where he could just slide away brilliantly. This is 17 pounds heavier. Hatton or even Margarito could make him regret carrying all that weight.

Got back from long a weekend away and just watched the PBF-Baldomir fight. Thought that PBF put on an absolute masterclass of defensive boxing. Baldomir was just no where near in his class and had no tools to deal with him. Even when Baldomir had him up close on the ropes he couldn't even hit him. PBF's footspeed and reflexes are something else.

However, there is still a void in trying to put this fight into perspective. PBF is clearly a few levels above the Baldomirs of the boxing world and needs a superfight. The trouble is there appears to be too few fighters that can satisfy that billing. ODLH is perhaps the only one, with maybe the winner of Cotto/Quintana a possibility. Until these fights take place the jury will out on PBF's overall legacy at the higher weight.
