Eastern Trials
Not sure what you mean by the above, Dennis. I can't see that there is any way Marco would have to box Luis if Luis is at 106 and Marco is at 112, possibly going to 119. I'll see Marco's coach at the Westerns this weekend and ask.Maybe, but Jerail and Terail Singleton had the same opportunity at the MW Trials at 106. Jerail had defeated Luis Rangel and then was scheduled to box his own brother Terail in the finals. Terail let his brother win on a walkover rather than compete against him.
Also heard that, as of last Friday, only 50 entries had been received. Sincerely hope it isn't a repeat of the Eastern Trials - or worse.
Mel - the reason is the above quote by usaboxing. I don't think they will be competing against each other since Marco is already qualified at 112 and now trying for 119 and Luis is qualified at 106.usaboxing wrote:Luis Rangel, did extremely well kept his opponent scoreless throughout the bout, with Luis and Marco both in the US championships at 106, it should be interesting they may have to face each other.
Right now they have 83 boxers listed on the participation list. I hope that it increases dramatically between now and the start of competition on Monday. As I said before regarding the Eastern Trials, as long as there are at least 8 good boxers per weight class it will be a good tournament. 8 per class is 88 total boxers. It becomes a great tournament if they can get a 4th day of competition in most weight classes (up to 16 boxers per class) and a 5th day in a few weight classes (17-32 boxers per class). Right now they are close in 132, 141 & 152 with 12, 14 & 12 boxers in each class respectively.boxmel wrote:Also heard that, as of last Friday, only 50 entries had been received. So do I.Right now they have 83 boxers listed on the participation list. I hope that it increases dramatically between now and the start of competition on Monday.
Speaking as a coach, I understand your above words. Speaking as administration, a small turnout (less than 200) means not-a-very-busy tournament - USAB spends money it doesn't have on unneeded officials and computer techs, for instance. However, I've never been to Salt Lake City so maybe I'll have time to sightsee. Frankly, though, I'd rather be busy than not.As I said before regarding the Eastern Trials, as long as there are at least 8 good boxers per weight class it will be a good tournament.

Have brothers ever squared off before in the trials ?
I know Glenn and Nonito Donaire were in the same weight class (106a) at the 2000 trials but didnt face each other, though both lost to Brian Viloria. Anyone know if this has happened before ?
