In the kyu ranks the basics are not super difficult to learn.
But in the Black Belt ranks, the competitors are a whole differint story.
Even after having a few pro fights and sparring with all kinds of good boxers, pound for pound the toughest people who I have ever trained with are Russian Judoka.
Hard as nails, many are also practitioners of Sambo.

Expug I was wondering if you could answer a question for me on Judo.

I did a bit of boxing when I was younger and always fancied giving Judo a try too, but I was wondering is being tall a disadvantage? It seems to be alot about balance and that having a low centre of gravity would be a big advantage. I weight train but because of my basic build I'm always gonna be quite tall and lean (6' 3" and around 180lbs).

Cheers.

I don't doubt that mate!

I was trained by Tony Ray who fought at quite a high level and was an excellent trainer...Although I prefer stand up fighting some of those moves have proved priceless!

Hello JC how are you my friend?
Tall guys do real well.
There are many leg throws,( Ashi Waza.)
Or hip throws involving the legs that tall guys can really toss people with.
And in the ground work the legs are great for positioning and for strangle techniques.
Im about 6-2.
Also, the Judo in the U.K. is great.
Much better than the U.S.
Neil Adams from England was an all-time great.
David Starbrook was tremendous also.
I trained with a guy here a couple years ago named David Ellis who is nationaly ranked here and is real tall , about the same size as you.
He hit me with a throw involving his legs (Uchi Mata) that almost bounced me off the ceiling.

I need to learn some grappling, wrestling. I know how to box
and have very fast hands but I think I could do with knowing
some judo or krav maga... which isn't wrestling but looks useful! :box:

I'm off to South Korea in september to work so that would be a great
opportunity to have a go at a few martial arts. :TU:

Attacks happen all the time in Notts.

My friend was beat up whilst clubbing and was set about by 3 lads - it lasted about 20 seconds if that they reckon.

Fractured cheekbone, jaw broke under the ear and the chin, stitches in his eye lid.

He is a big lad and can look after himself and these were 3 scrotes.

But the police said it was lucky it was one of the clubs with a metal detector fitted otherwise they would have had '2 sliced belly incidents' to deal with from Saturday night.

The point is, attacks like this can leave you seeking revenge and being bitter - the smart guy gets the fwock outta there rather than fight an unknown group who could potentially be tooled up.

I appreciate we say 'cowardly mate ran off' - what happens next time he's in bother and wants to get rid of the 'coward' tag afforded him and he winds up getting a right pasting or stabbed?

Its bloody awful (stabbings).

A guy i know who works the door said a lad got stabbed right outside his club and the knife must have punctured his bowel as there was sh*t as well as blood coming out of him - they had to wrap his abdomen in celaphane to save his life.

Only fight when all avenues are exhausted.

Its a very tough martial art to learn.
The poundings are incredible.
I dont see karate as more formidable, but of course Im biased.
A clean hard throw against a person on concrete who doesnt know how to take a proper fall is absolute devastation.
But your points are excellent.

Thanks, what I meant about Judo being easier to pick up is that you can learn the basics like throwing and tripping pretty quickly and you can also do them even if your not particularly physical or fit... I've seen little grannies of 70 doing throws... Judo is more user friendly!...

And that brings up an interesting point.
Kano , the founder of Judo intended it to be a sport/Martial Art that could be learned by most everyone.
Then in 1964 it became an Olympic sport.
And of course after that and even before that , it became a very tough survival of the fittest sport.

It isnt the martial art or whatever that is good or rubbish, its the individual that practises it.

I have seen a few lads that have trained at boxing gyms for years and still couldnt knock out a wank..

At the same time I know traditional karateka who are hard as nails, and vice versa

There is no perfect style or system it down to the individual and how they can apply what they know.

What about trying some form of MMA training, where at least you can learn about manhandling someone to the ground and kicking the shit out of them.

http://www.londonshootfighters.com

There's also a guy up in the Midlands, some ex-SAS bloke called Bob Spour who teaches self-defence classes - his vids are on YouTube and they look quite good.

Bob Spour is a Muay Thai instructor around Brum - one of the earliest Muay Thai instructors in the midlands I believe. He has a solid reputation (in terms of teaching) around this neck of the woods.

THere are loads of quality places around Brum. :TU:

London Shoot fighters is the home to a very successful domestic MMA squad of fighters so that too is reputable. (although I often find that MMA, because it is trendy/popular at the moment is also usually very pricey).

You cant go wrong with the training prices of ABA affiliated boxing gyms IMO.

Every situation is different.

If you put yourself in a position where your ability to take care of yourself is necessary then Good Luck. People have asked me in the past what they should have done or what they could do in the future if similar situations arise. I always say the same thing: don't mix with people that put themselves in the frame where you become the target.

This is a far departure from James' situation, where he went to the aid of his passive pal. But the simple realisation is that if you do not see that self justifying red mist, and all the consequences that comes from that, then as hard as it sounds you have to swallow.

I found myself in a few situations, not of my making, but where the person that was a mate (loosely speaking) put ME in the shit.

What I think I am saying is that if the red mist comes from a well principled place with an ability to do something about it then do not think twice. There are too many pudenda about who use intimidation to prey on strong and well meaning people of good nature.

Well, to be fair, he's not really a good mate, he's someone I go to Samba with. However, I thought enough of him to try and save his skin from a butt-pumping, more fool me, though it's not his fault he's a bit of a pussy.

As you say, 2 on 3, I would have fancied my chances, because one of the three would probably have beaten a retreat

What makes me laugh is that the geezer does Aikido as well, just goes to prove that martial arts don't count for shit, unless you're going to do the do in a street situation.

Hmm the pepper spray idea is tempting, isn't it illegal to carry it though?

Physical fighting ability aside one important thing is to try and keep a clear head at all times. This allows you to think one step ahead of your attacker.

Easier said than done though in the 'rush' of the moment.
