I thought POM originally came from Prisoner Of Mother England referring to the convicts but we later turned it around on them because we escaped the bad weather and warm beer so it turns out they were the real Prisoners Of Mother England and we are the lucky ones... We later extended it to Pommy as we do like to put a Y on the end of words.

But that would be POME, anyhow the theory doesnt sound all that bad - A lady I know has a house full of valuable antiques - In a cabinet she has four peices of porcelain in a set called the four continents - I asked her about them and she said "they are so old, they predate the discovery of Australia"- Must be worth a fortune.
