BoxBuzz wrote:Silkov for the record you and I agree on what led to Duran's no mas decision. It's just so out of character for him. It always seemed to me he was faced with a decision based on pride. He chose the humiliation of quitting a fight by choice rather than losing control of bodily functions in front of millions. Hell of a choice to be stuck with. But his prior work and his work after that moment tell the story. There honestly was no quit in that guy. But there was tremendous pride.
Definately it is a different kind of humiliation to have that kind of accident to being beaten or knocked out and I understand his decision. It also explains why he has never gone on record 100% and said why he pulled out!... though really if you read between the lined of 'stomach cramps' then it should really be obvious what the problem was.

Back to the topic and thus far no one seems to have mentioned the fact that Monzon had been shot in the early years of his reign as champion.

I think it was by his first wife or a mistress.

He reputedly had to adjust his style for the damage that done been done to one of his shoulders. Notwithstanding he didn't allow this setback to interrupt his reign as champion, and then of course there was his ongoing smoking, drinking and playboy life style as well.

Cheeky bugger :x Although I must admit your knowledge of fighters' heights in standing (as distinct from not standing) is rather impressive

But back to Monzon - he was killed in '95 after being found guilty of murder. What was he doing on day? leave if he was a convicted murderer??

He was on day release from prison to visit his family.
He was the driver on the way back to prison and crashed the car, whether intentional or accidental is not known.

Enrique talked of the "length of his arms". I was amazed when I saw his reach. Does anyone know what it was?

That is amazing how in the hell did he do it? What could he have accomplished with full lung capacity? Thats like going into a fight with one hand tied behind your back for 3 rounds.

According to the Tale of the Tape of the Licata fight, it was 76.5". The Napoles fight had him at 77".

According to the Associated Press report published 10th January 1995, the day after the accident, the car which Monzon was driving 'went off the road and overturned' when he was returning to the penitentiary.

The report also stated the crash killed his close friend, Geronimo Motura, and that Monzon was actually expected to be paroled the next month, after having completed three quarters of his 11yr sentence.
