Lewis Welch from Darlington one of the best knuckle men about at the minute. He is fighting Tony Tucker (he of Mike Tyson fame) in an unlicenced fight (in a ring with gloves tho) in March. Deffo gonna go and see that.

The very same mate. He's deffo a heavyweight these days. Stocky and barrel-chested. There is a pic of him in the Bartley Gorman King of the Gypsies book and Bartley himself refers to him as one of the top current men. Former ABA champ and quality pro Ian Cooper also on the March show.

Thats some pretty vivid imagery Simpsons! and yes he most probably would whup me - that said, he wants to get that chin down before someone finds it in an MMA match.

I dont think fellow street fighter Tank Abbot will be the man to take advantage of it in Feb but u never know!

Yeah, I've seen that fight, and to tell you the truth, I was less than impressed.

Street fighting sounds impressive and exciting, but, as the level gets higher and you don't get one man bashing a hopelessley outmatched sap, they tend to be tedious, scrappy affairs.

One of the reasons, I believe, the MoQ rules became more popular.

That said, I've always wanted to see Wharton in action and would love to know if there's anywhere online carrying any of his street fights.

Great chin, great punch...might struggle against movers in the boxing ring, but bareknuckle is a different story.

Yeah Henry was an excellent boxer, who unfortunately did not take his best chance which was against Benn - was too cagey in the first four rounds - he admits he was overcome by the fact he was fighting one of his idols, but once he got into it he gave what Benn describes in his book as his HARDEST ever fight, not the most difficult, but hardest. The thing with Henry is that he has an extremelly powerful punch - heavy boned, lots of power. There was only a few points between him and Benn, Wharton just started too slowly. Think that loss took something out of him and heard some of those close to him say the same.

And yeah, he is a handful out of the ring. He's a traveller, so its part of his culture, plenty of his family can scrap for fun. Eubank and Reid would not have last on the cobbles with him.

I saw Ian Cooper storm out of the ring after defeat to, I think Jim Rock. Forget where, he was 8-0 at the time and I think it was an 8 rounder. It was close but I thought Cooper lost.

True Gannon outlasted Kimbo in their 'sparring match' but that was back when Kimbo was a heavy smoking/drinking bodyguard to p0rn stars.

He has since dedicated himself to a spartan training regime under Bas Rutten and is willing to learn and improve his knowledge base and technique. He is pretty humble and realises there is alot to learn.

He is pretty old to be taking up a sport like MMA, esp with no formal trained fighting background, so I dont expect him to get to the top but he is certainly exciting to watch!

I would fancy him to wipe out Gannon in a return MMA match. The copy keeps pricing himself out of any such match.

As of 1994 Benn said it was his hardest fight, that's when the first copy of the book was done.

Obviously, the McClellan fight was harder.

Eubank's victory over Wharton was arguably his best performance post Watson.

Henry was a fkker with that left hand.

I thought Slugger O'Toole/Fidel Castro Smith beat him handily though.

He says the Rocchigiani fight was his peak performance largely because he'd 'only' had two fights in 12 months before that.

True but look at that fat cop - he was totally out of shape too and not a good fighter.

Kimbo did beat an unfit untrained Ray Mercer though, which kind of surprised me.

But all those other internet movies of him, he's bashing up scared guys who can't really fight.....

Tank Abbott would've beaten him earlier in his career, but now he's just a fat, out of shape, old fighter.

Cooper beat Rock. He got beat off Ojay Abrahams and you are correct, he did storm off. Coopers cornerman told me that at the weigh-in, Ojay turned up in a full length black leather trenchcoat, looking like somebody from the film the Matrix, and suprisingly this unsettled Coops, even physched him out a bit.

Cooper stood Rock on his head in London (shortly after Rocky had enjoyed a three-page article in The Ring magazine). Was in Barnsley for the Abrahams fight. Cooper won it in my view but it was on very early and some of his 'fans' were knocking racial abuse out. If I remember rightly the referee was mixed race too and Ian didn't get the nod. He went on the drink for weeks afterwards and was later arrested for paggering someone he was (incorrectly) told was a nonce and went to prison. Top, top lad is Ian. Could have done so much more but still loves a scrap and is doing very well in the unlicensed game now and has his weight back down to 13st 4lbs. Beat former pro heavyweight Paul Fiske just before Christmas (dropped him twice) and looks in awesome shape.

It was sad to see a once excellent heavyweight boxer like Mercer getting overwhelmed by Kimbo, whose fans have got to be some of the thickest I've ever heard.
